Steuben County Public Defenders Getting Award Today 

The entire Steuben County Public Defender’s Office is getting an award today from the state public defenders department.  The letter from the state public defender’s office said, the Steuben County Public Defenders team has been very helpful to their clients.  “This award is being given in recognition of your Office’s unrelenting efforts to ensure that the intent and
letter of the discovery reforms are fulfilled,” said Susan Bryant, NYSDA Executive Director, in a letter to county Chief Defender Shawn Sauro. “You and your staff have faced constant efforts to prevent those reforms and you have achieved successful outcomes for your clients. Our legal staff are proud to support
you in this fight. For these reasons and more, we are privileged to honor you.”  Sauro noted the award has been given to his entire team.  “This is huge,” he said. “For Steuben to be awarded this top achievement over all the other providers in the State? I have no words.  “They typically give this award to an outstanding individual. This year they are awarding my whole office because of their excellence.”

Dealing With Fires At Alternative Energy Sites

Governor Kathy Hochul is setting up a new inter-agency organization to help first responders deal with fires at solar and wind facilities.  That’s because of a huge solar power battery fire out of Jefferson County last week.  The governor says, this agency will send around workers to do inspections across the state.  The Democrat governor also says, there have also been fires in Orange County and Suffolk County too.  

Campbell Savona And Returning Students Getting Physicals

The 50th Anniversary Of Summer Jam At Watkins Glen

A website called TheGratefulWeb.com reports that today marks the 50^th anniversary of the 1973 Summer Jam at Watkins Glen.  The Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band and other groups were there.  The 1973 Summer Jam at Watkins Glen was said to be, even bigger in crowd size than the 1969 Woodstock Concert was.

Gillibrand's First Responder Summit In Washington D.C. 

Democrat U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is holding a New York State First Responders Summit in Washington D.C. Acting State Police Superintendent Steven Nigrelli and State Police Deputy Superintendent Richard Allen are there.  The Superintendent took part in a panel about recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers.  State and federal law enforcement officials, and Fire and EMS first responders were also at the Summit.

Spectrum News reports that GOP state lawmakers are suing the governor and the state to overturn a new state law that makes it so state legislators cannot have a job outside of being a lawmaker. 

Elmira Woman Charged For Alleged Car Theft In Avoca

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that deputies arrested 45 year old Sunni Clark of South Main Street, Elmira, with Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a Class E Felony, Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree and Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle in the Third Degree.  It is alleged that in January, Sunni Clark stole a vehicle in Avoca and damaged it in Lindley.  Clark was remanded to the county jail without bail.

Langworthy Praises  The Bath VA During House Speech

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy is voting for House Resolution 4366, The Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.  Which, in the VA part of it, provides appropriations for VA hospitals.  Regarding this topic on the house floor yesterday Langworthy talked about the Bath VA.   "I recently had the privilege of visiting the Bath NY VA Hospital in my district, in Steuben County, where I witnessed firsthand, the incredible work done by the Bath VA staff," Langworthy stated.  "These facilities are responsible for serving thousands of veterans, and they deserve our unwavering support."   

Five County Employees Honored By County Lawmakers 

Five Steuben County employees were recognized by the county Legislature Hilary Graham for her 10 years of service.  Brenden Smalt for his 15 years of service.  Department Social Services Commissioner Teresa Stever, who is retiring after 32 years.  Kim Gotshall, who is retiring after 30 years service.  Also, Becky Shoemaker was honored, for her 25 years of service.

Upcoming Railroad Work Is Set For Early-Mid August

Work on the railroad crossings on Knight Settlement Road in Bath is set for August 7^th- 11^th, and there will be detours.  Also, work on railroad crossings on Main Street in Campbell is set for August 14^th  – 18^th  and there will be detours for that also.

Wayland Transfer Station Has Reopened

Steuben County officials have annnoucned that the Wayland Transfer Station, is now open again.  According to one county FB page, the Wayland Transfer Station opened up on July 20.  

Governor Hochul Warning That Albany/NYC Will Get Hot

It’s going to be extremely hot in Albany and New York City Thursday, with some calling for temperatures and heat indexes to be in the low 100’s tomorrow.  So what about here in Steuben County as far as weather for tomorrow?  Will it get that hot locally?  Meteorologist Scott Kaplan says it won't.  "Tomorrow, no, not in Steuben County.  Friday?  Locally, it'll be hot but not quite that hot in Steuben County.  New York City could get up close to 100 degrees, Albany?  Less than that, though the heat index could get up to around 100 in Albany.  In Steuben County though, it won't be that hot, however, it'll be hotter on Friday in Steuben Co, than it will be Thursday,"

Kaplan stated.   

Railroad Crossing Rehab Work Slated For August

Steuben County Department of Public Works Commissioner Eric Rose says there will be rail crossing work coming up in August, on Knight Settlement Road in the Town of Bath, and on Main Street in Campbell.

Byrnes, D.O.T., Fighting Prattsbrugh Speeding Drivers

Steuben County Officials say Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes and the New York State Department of Transportation have asked Steuben County officials to get law enforcement to crack down on speeding drivers in Prattsburgh.  Byrnes and the D.O.T. say some in Prattsburgh are going over the speed limit during school hours.   

Three New Members Are In The County Hall of Fame 

Three names were inducted into the Steuben County Hall of Fame Monday. Local NAACP President Georgia Verdier of Corning, Hammondsport historian Richard Sherer, and a photographer from over 100 years ago, Henry Marcus Benner.

Georgia Verdier, of Corning, is a noted public servant and leader in the civil rights movement. While most recently an active resource in 2020 in the county’s police reform efforts, Verdier holds masters degrees in Education/Psychology and Public Service Administration.  A retired New York State Department of Mental Health Health Care Manager, and President of the local NAACP Verdier helps lead the
association’s annual programming covering health care, criminal justice, education, civic engagement and economic development. She has served on numerous community boards including Economic Opportunity Program Inc., the Guthrie Health Women’s Advisory Group, and the Corning Poverty Collaborative. A worldwide advocate for human rights, Verdier also was a member of the late U.S. Rep. Amory Houghton’s
South African tour. In 2018, Verdier received the New York NAACP President’s Award, issued in recognition of her “devotion to the NAACP mission,  contribution to the NAACP goals and immutable commitment to the ideals of equality and justice.”

Richard Sherer was a dedicated preserver of Steuben County’s long history, perhaps best widely known for his work during the county’s Bicentennial in 1996. A longtime Hammondsport/Urbana Historian and Steuben’s Historian for 14 years, he was active in promoting the Ark of Steuben/Joel Pratt and navigated the ark down the Chemung and Susquehanna rivers, starting on the Conhocton River. Sherer wrote Keuka Lake and The Grape, edited and compiled Steuben County:The First 200 Years and helped in compiling the Jim Drake Stories. His efforts are considered responsible for providing a strong foundation for deepening Steuben’s understanding of its history.

Henry Marcus “Harry” Benner was a pioneer in his field of photography, becoming a semiofficial Glenn H. Curtiss photographer during Curtiss’ pre-World War I career, capturing some of the most famous images of Curtiss’ ground-breaking new aircraft and other aerial milestones, such as the flight of the White Wing in 1908.

Rep. Nick Langworthy's FAA Regulation Amendment 

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy is pleased that his amendment passed, to keep the airline pilot training hours at 1500 hours.  Langworthy says, the families of Flight 3407, which crashed in February of 2009, were the ones who pushed for more training for airline pilots.

In this years National Defense bill, Democrat U.S. Senator Kirsten Gililbrand , is working to get an amendment passed to ban crypto currency assets for any illegal purposes, such as hiding fentanyl trafficking and ransomware theft money. 

Big Meeting For The D.A. Today 

District Attorney Brooks Baker meets today with the State Police and Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, to discuss whether to press criminal charges against a suicidal male suspect, or to let the case be dealt with by mental health officials.  The Hornell Sun broke a story over the weekend, and WLEA News confirmed it with the District Attorney: that a male suspect who tried to kill himself, had a note about wanting to kill prominent elected officials.  As soon as we learn District Attorney Brooks Baker’s decision, we’ll let you know what that is.

Two Big Names, Coming To This Summer's County Fair

At this year’s Steuben County Fair, which is coming up in mid-August, Flo Rida and Fitz and the Tantrums, will both be performing.

 Public Works Commissioner Eric Rose says Route 76 in Urbana between the Hammondsport Village line and Sanford road, will be single lane traffic, starting Monday, July 24, and that will last till August 11.  Construction work hours will be 7am to 4pm.  County crews will be replacing a guardrail.   Commissioner Rose also says the Anglehart Road bridge in the Town of Lindley, will be closed on or about Monday, July 24, and that work will last for 10 weeks.   The bridge will be removed and completely replaced with a new concrete box culvert.  There will not be an on-site detour.

U.S. Senators Get Funding For Elmira/Corning Airport Work

Democrat Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand got 4.3 million dollars in funding to the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport.  The funding will be used to reconstruct the airport’s tarmac.   

Langworthy's FAA Amendment Passes In The House

Congressman Nick Langworthy (R, NY23) and Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (R, NY24) got an amendment passed, to keep the current FAA rule in place, so that airline pilots have to have 1500 hours of flight training.   Langworthy's district includes parts of Erie County, where Flight 4307 crashed over a decade ago.  The congressman made a point of saying there has not been an airline crash in America since pilots have been getting the required 1500 hours in training, which has been an Federal Aviation Agency rule since the aftermath of the Flight 4307 tragedy.       

Borrello : Fighting That Second Hand Marijuana Smoke

GOP State Senator George Borrello has introduced legislation that would ban smoking and consuming of marijuana in public places unless specifically authorized by that locality.  Borrello says, since the laws changed in 2021, he’s gotten a lot of complaints about people’s children getting exposed to marijuana smoke in public. 

Road Work Coming Up On Monday In Urbana

Eric Rose, the Steuben County Public Works Commissioner says that a section of the eastbound lane of County Route 76 in the Town of Urbana will be reduced to one lane from 7 am to 4 pm from Monday, July 24 through August 11.  Rose says, that will be between the Hammondsport village line and Sanford Road in order to replace a guardrail.

Drivers Who Get In DWI/DWAI Trouble, Are Under More Than One Influence, Says Steuben County Sheriff Allard

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard says there’s been a big increase in impaired drivers, being under the influence of more than one chemical substance.  "The biggest increase we see in our impaired drivers is multi-drug use," Allard says.  "Where it's not just one thing, it's alcohol and marijuana.  It's alcohol and marijuana and fentanyl.  It's that combination, that multi-drug effect, which makes them that much more dangerous as a driver on the highway," said Allard.

D.O.T.: Bridge Work On 86 In Campbell This Weekend

The New York State Department of Transportation is today advising motorists that westbound traffic along Interstate 86 between Exits 42 and 41 in the town of Campbell, Steuben County will close beginning 7 p.m. on Friday, July 21 to accommodate bridge rehabilitation work. The roadway is anticipated to reopen by the morning of Monday, July 24. The off-ramp for eastbound traffic along I-86 will also close as part of this project. Motorists should utilize the posted detours.

All construction activities are weather dependent. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.  Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.

Sheriff: On Human Trafficking Of Children In Steuben Co

Have you seen the new Jim Caviezel movie, “Sound of Freedom”?   It’s about the human trafficking of children.  We asked Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard about that and he says, there have not been any arrests of suspects who kidnap a child and force that child into prostitution at a young age.    However the sheriff notes there have been human trafficking suspects charged in Steuben County, who knew the victims and were familiar with them.  "What we've had is more of the case of narcotics trafficking, where children are used or videoed," Sheriff Allard stated.  "We've had cases of that, and where that has been sold.  We had a case where a grandfather was setting up liasons with suspects in Rochester, and these were (child victims) from Steuben County.   So it's not as prevelant here as it is in New York City or other major metropolitan areas, but it does occur," Allard said.

Addison Man Dies In Motorcycle Crash In Tioga Co PA

In Pennsylvania, State Troopers out of Mansfield report that Alan Freeman, 74, Addison, died as a result of injuries, after he was in a motorcycle crash in Tioga County Pennsylvania.  That accident happened in the 4:00 hour on Sunday afternoon in the town of Delmar.  PA Troopers say that Alan Freeman was ejected from his motorcycle in the crash, and was later pronounced dead at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital.

Old CVS Building In Bath Is Up For Being Leased
Bath Village Mayor Michael Sweet says, the old CVS building on Liberty Street in Bath, is available to be leased.  A letter from the new owner states that they’re putting up a new roof on the CVS building and doing different things to make it look better in the front and rear of the building.  The contact number for the new owner, is 215-542-3900.

Bath Police: Campbell Woman Facing Numerous Charges      

From Police Chief Colin Taft: On 07/14/2023 at 4:19 PM, officers with the Village of Bath Police Department were dispatched to McMaster Street for a female reporting that she had just been stabbed.  This report initiated an emergency response from officers as well as Bath Ambulance.  Upon arrival, a female was located at the corner of McMaster St. and E Steuben St. The female was not stabbed and was not injured whatsoever. In attempting to investigate the report, the female refused to identify herself and attempted to walk away from the scene several times.  When officers attempted to detain the female to identify her and prevent her from leaving the scene, the female physically resisted. She was detained following a brief struggle, during which, an officer sustained an injury to the left elbow.  The female was identified as Holly L. Bailey, age 36, of Campbell. Bailey was suspected to be under the influence of narcotics. Bailey was arrested and charged with NYS PL 240.50(2)- Falsely Reporting an Incident in the third degree, a Class A misdemeanor, NYS PL 195.05- Obstructing Governmental Administration in the second degree, a Class A misdemeanor, and NYS PL 120.05(3)- Assault in the second degree, a Class D felony. The assault charge stems from the injury sustained by the officer.  Holly was processed and transported to the Steuben County Jail for CAP arraignment where she was released.

Steuben County Public Works Commissioner Eric Rose is reminding people that County Route 80 from County Road 22 to County Road 21 in Rathbone is closed today through Thursday.  Rose also says there’s a detour from 730am to 330pm, through this Thursday. 

Fentynal Is A Major Topic These Days

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy spoke with reporter Brian O'Neil recently about how Fentanyl is coming from China and into America from the Mexican border.  Democrat U.S. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand spent the weekend saying the same exact thing: that the United States has to get the Fentynal problem under control.  "The majority of illegal fentanyl entering the United States is made with Chinese precursor chemicals and manufactured in Mexico," Gillibrand stated.  Schumer, according to a report from Reuters, said that the government in China is fully aware of this, and does not protest it.

Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson also talked about that same issue over the weekend at a conservative conference in Florida: the Turning Point USA Conference. 

Steuben County Republican Chair, Joe Sempolinski, notes that all sides are seeing the issue, exactly the same way.  "Am actually a little bit encouraged to see people both sides of the political spectrum, talking about this," Sempolinski tells WVIN.  "Obviously, you don't usually have both Tucker Carlson and Chuck Schumer, on the same page," Sempolinski stated this morning.  

The Steuben County Public Health Department put out their report on opiods.  In June 42 overdoses were reported. One overdose was fatal, and narcan was used by officials 12 times.  Public Health Director Darlene Smith says, “We are now halfway through the year and are trending above 2022’s reports in overdoses and fatalities. “  Smith also says, other reported substances included prescription drugs, methamphetamines, marijuana, alcohol and others.  

Elmira Man Charged With Stealing Car In Horseheads

State Police charged a 38 year old Elmira man with 2^nd degree Burglary and 2^nd degree Grand Larceny, after the suspect allegedly broke into a place in Horseheads, stole car keys, and then stole a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander.  The Outlanders was recovered and the suspect was sent to Chemung County Jail, $25,000 bail. Elmira City Police Department assisted troopers with this investigation. 

Construction Work On Route 54A 

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the start of construction on a $12.2 million project to improve resiliency along State Route 54A in the Town of Urbana.  The governor says, the project will install new drainage and other enhancements to bolster the roadway's ability to withstand heavy rains and help prevent the travel disruptions that have previously occurred on this vital roadway during instances of severe weather. "This investment along State Route 54A in Steuben County will help reduce the road closures and other travel headaches that have become all-too common on this key roadway," Gov Hochul stated. This project is slated to be completed by summer 2025.
 

From Senator Chuck Schumer: "State Route 54A is a vital roadway for millions of Upstate NY residents traveling between the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions to visit the scenic waterfronts of Keuka Lake, but its location along a steep embankment and lack of drainage has created serious hazards that put traveled at risk during heavy rain and severe weather. I am proud to have helped deliver the critical federal funding to fortify this roadway against heavy rains and slope failures, improving its resiliency for years to come."

Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler: "Steuben County thanks the Governor and New York State Department of Transportation for funding this important project. We have witnessed multiple flash flood events over the past decade plus that that have impacted State Route 54A, resulting in property damage and travel disruptions. This needed investment will better protect Keuka Lake, our homeowners, and our many visitors."

GOP Senator Thanks Dem Governor For Helping Ontario Co

Canandaigua area Republican State Senator Pam Helming, is thanking Governor Kathy Hochul for having already declared a state of emergency for Ontario County.   "Incredible TEAMWORK in Ontario County. Thank you to local/county officials and the Governor's office for responding quickly in declaring a state of emergency and deploying state resources. West Point Academy Seriously Affected By The Flooding 

Another place that was hit hard by the flooding, was West Point Academy, in Orange County.  Senators Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand want the Army Corp of Engineers to get help in there and fast.  Schumer and Gillibrand noted that they want to avoid any stalling by federal agencies on getting relief to West Point.  The two senators are concerned that this could happen, due to a loophole about duplication of services in the disaster relief laws.  As such, Schumer and Gillibrand are pressuring FEMA and numerous military agencies to get moving on this as quickly as possible.  

In a media zoom call held at 2:00pm this afternoon, Senator Gillibrand said the following: "I spoke to the West Point Superintendent, Lt. General Steve Galland, and he said that the roads, in and out of West Point, are severely damaged.  And he said, that West Point sustained other damage that he's going to be getting a full reporting on.  I'm hoping to visit West Point over the next several days, to see it for myself, and to do whatever I can to get the resources they need."  

Sweet:  Mowing Around The "Welcome To Bath Sign" 

Bath Mayor Michael Sweet is publicly thanking the Bath Town Highway Department and the Bath Village Street Department, for working together to get the lawn mowed near the “Welcome to Bath” sign.  The mayor says, yesterday they got the okay to mow that area from the current property owners, and the mayor says, we do our part to make Bath look nice as it’s a reflection on the community.

Troopers: Who Is Skimming At The Erwin Walmart Store?

From State Police: The New York State Police in SP Painted Post is investigating the use of a credit card skimming device at Walmart in the town of Erwin, Steuben County. Store employees discovered the device and immediately removed it. The skimming device had been manufactured to fit over the existing credit card scanner. It was equipped with a similar keypad and markings and was used to steal account information from unsuspecting customers. 

The investigation determined that three subjects had entered the establishment on the morning of July 3, 2023, and secretly installed the device. The investigation further revealed that these same individuals are suspected of conducting numerous similar incidents throughout the Southern Tier and Central New York areas. 

Shoppers are reminded to check for inconsistencies with the equipment when swiping their cards. Signs may include loose-fitting covers, misaligned card readers, or an oversized appearance. Anyone with information is asked to contact the New York State Police SP Painted Post at 607-962-3282.

Mayor Sweet: Wanna Win $10 Million For A Project In Bath?

Have you ever heard of the state program called New York Forward?  They give away $10 million dollars in state money, for projects in towns across the state and Bath Village Mayor Michael Sweet wants to get some of that money for the village.  According to Mayor Sweet, there’s a public meeting coming up about how you can win some money for a project, that meeting will be August 7^th at 6pm at the Bath Fire Station.

Canandaigua Flooded 

Assemblywoman Majorie Byrnes says a lot of Ontario County residents have been affected by the flooding there.  (Flooding hit Sunday night and there was a lot of it all over the streets of Canandaigua).   Byrnes has half of Ontario County in her district.

State Police put out a statement saying to keep your house doors and car doors locked.  They say that’s because Jamestown suspect Michael Burham is still on the loose.  Burham is said to be a survivalist and is said to be considered dangerous.   If you see him, please call 9-1-1. 

Wednesday's Memorial Service For Former Bath Fire Chief 

The Bath Volunteer Fire Department says they’re having a memorial service for former Bath Fire Chief Jim Orme, Wednesday July 11, at 6:00 pm.  Officials say that the memorial service will begin at the Bath Fire Station, 50 East Morris Street and go to the VA grounds.  Afterwards, there will be a reception at the Bath Fire Station.

The County Lucked Out This Time On The Flash Flooding

On Sunday afternoon in the 5:00 hour, the National Weather Service put out a Flash Flood warning for the Steuben County Towns of Addison, Jasper, Woodhull, Thurston, Cameron and Cameron Mills.  On Monday morning we contacted Steuben County Emergency Services Director Tim Marshall, who says he’s not gotten any reports from any of those towns regarding any flooding or storm damage.  However, Governor Kathy Hochul did declare a state of emergency for Ontario County, because of the flooding last night in Canandaigua. 

Schumer: Too Much Caffeine In Prime Soft Drinks 

CBS News reports that Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer called on the Food and Drug Administration to investigate PRIME, because of the high amount of caffeine it contains.   Schumer says that a 12-oz. can OF PRIME has 200 milligrams of caffeine, which is equivalent to about half a dozen Coke cans or nearly two Red Bulls.

Hochul: On Protecting Migrant Workers 

Governor Kathy Hochul says the state labor department has a new process to protect migrant workers who are not U.S. citizens from retaliation during labor disputes.  Hochul maintains there are two purposes of this: one, two make sure the migrants are not deported, two, to make sure the migrants don’t end up working under duress.     

D.E.C. And Senator O'Mara's Reminder About Fishing Event

There is a family fishing event on Thursday the 13^th, 10am-Noon, at the Birdseye Hollow Pond in Hammondsport.  The Department of Environmental Conservation says bring your own gear, or use theirs.  Officials also say no fishing license is needed for this event.

How effective are police bodycams in Steuben County?  Very effective, according to Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker.   "It's like Monday Night Football," Baker said.  "Lets go to the tape and find out what happened.  People are seeing police officers do the right thing and it's eye opening for the community." 

Gillibrand's Flag Act Will Help Gun Owners, Trooper Investigator Union Leader Says

Tim Dymond, the head of the New York State Police Investigators Union, put out a statement of support for Democrat Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s Flag Act.  The head of that police union says the number of Extreme Risk Protection Orders over owning guns, has gone way up.  The Troopers investigators union head also says, Gillibrand’s Flag Act would make it so that more gun owners get defense attorneys, when someone files a protection order to get their guns taken away. 

Langworthy and TVTP: It's Too Politically Biased

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy is questioning the Homeland Security program called TVTP, Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention.  Langworthy says, Homeland Security’s TVTP program is going after conservatives and Christians.  Langworthy also says the TVTP program is just targeting political opponents.  Now that statement was in a press release.   Recently, Langworthy was criticized by the Corning City Democrats, for using his official House email to send out to voters, what the Corning Democrats called, divisive political rhetoric.  (However, it should be noted that the above criticism of TVTP was not part of the weekly email, it was sent out in a separate statement.) 

Avoca Getting State $$$ For Culvert Work

Governor Kathy Hochul says that more than $516 million dollars in funding is going to 216 Projects in 141 Communities Across NYS.  According to Houchl, over $1,000,000 of that money is going to Avoca for the replacement of the East Avenue culvert.   "New York State is making historic investments to modernize our infrastructure and we are committed to working with our partners in local government to help ensure that their bridges and culverts are ready to meet the challenges of global climate change," Governor Hochul said. "The BRIDGE NY program provides essential funding directly to local governments to enhance the safety, resiliency, sustainability and reliability of local infrastructure, allowing more than 140 bridges to better withstand extreme weather events and keep New Yorkers safe."

Auto Theft Is On The Increase Countywide

Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker says, there’s an increase in car thefts in the county.  "Stolen cars used to be a rarity here in Steuben County," Baker said.  "Now it seems like we're getting multiple reports daily about people stealing cars.  If it's unlocked, if the keys are left  in it, or even if it's somehow accessible or by 'hot wiring' which is now available through internet access, it's happening, and it's happening much more than it was before.  If think if you talk with Bath Village Police or Corning or Hornell Police, or the State Police or Sheriff's Deputies, they'll tell you: we are seeing more auto thefts than we've seen before."  

Gov Hochul Blocks A Cannabis Management Board Plan 

The New York Post has an article out that says Governor Hochul is stopping the state’s Cannabis Management Board from allowing marijuana from being sold at Farmer’s Markets and festivals.   The article goes on to say that this was something the state Cannabis Management Board wanted to see happen, but Hochul’s office was quoted as saying the plan was on hold and they say it might not happen at all.

Gillibrand's Small Farm Bill

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand joined 9 of her Senate colleagues to introduce the Small Farm Conservation Act, legislation that would help small farms access federal conservation programs delivered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).

Specifically, the Small Farm Conservation Act would:

1.       Create a subprogram within EQIP tailored to support small farms and ranches;

2.       Establish a national subprogram coordinator and one in each State;

3.       Streamline the application and approval processes for small farmers and ranches;

4.       Create a bonus payment for farms under 50 acres employing soil health practices;

5.       Allow small farms to enroll on a continuous basis instead of waiting for the annual ranking period; and

6.       Require the Natural Resources Conservation Service to train field staff on conservation tailored for small-scale agriculture and to conduct outreach to small-scale farmers and ranchers.

The Small Farm Conservation Act is additionally cosponsored by Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Angus King (I-ME), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Jack Reed (D-RI), and John Fetterman (D-PA).

Numerous Injured In Yates County Accident Last Night

From The Yates County Sheriff's Dept:   

On July 4, 2023 at 20:54 Yates County Deputies responded with Penn Yan Fire, Penn Yan Ambulance, Office of Emergency Service, Yates County Ambulance and Dundee Ambulance to the report of a two-car motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Bath Rd and Second Milo Rd in the Town of Milo. Upon arrival it was discovered that multiple passengers had varying injuries, six of passengers were minors. Investigation into the crash showed that Mr. Cronin’s vehicle was allegedly eastbound on Second Milo Rd when he failed to stop for a stop sign and struck Mr. Bailey’s vehicle which caused Bailey’s vehicle to roll over before coming to rest. Further investigation revealed that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash and Cronin was taken into custody for the above charges. All eight occupants of Bailey’s vehicle were transported to hospitals by multiple ambulances and helicopters to Soldiers and Sailors Hospital and Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Flags At Half-Staff Today, In Honor Of Ontario Co AIr Force Sgt, Who Died Recently In Arizona 

Governor Kathy Hochul has flags at half-staff at all State government buildings and facilities today and tomorrow, in honor of U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Kory Wade.  Wade was from the Ontario County town of Shortsville.  Staff Sgt Wade passed away following training exercises in Arizona, on June 14.   According to the Air Force Times website, he was found near Lake Roosevelt, Az.  

Congressman Nick Langworthy Was In Bath This Morning

This morning in the 10am and 11am hours, Congressman Nick Langworthy (R, NY23) stopped in to the Bath VA Medical Center.  "It's important that I go and visit the Bath VA," Langworthy tells WVIN.  "Very beautiful facility, they are providing great services for our veterans.  Coming off the 4th of July, where we all celebrate our amazing freedoms, it's an important reminder of the people that paid the sacrifice, and were and are wearing the uniform," Langworthy stated.    For the rest of the afternoon, the congressman will go to both Belmont (Allegany Co) and Olean (Cattaraugus Co) for Opiod Roundtables with law enforcement. 

The Cause Of The Smoke Coming Out Of Family Dollar

Smoke came out of the Bath Family Dollar store yesterday.  An email from Bath Volunteer Fire Spokesman John Conrad said quote: "Apparently a mechanical problem with one of the roof top air handling units. No fire."

Hammondsport Fireworks Plans For The Coming Weekend

Hammondsport fireworks are on Saturday July 8 at 10pm at the Hammondsport Fire Dept grounds.  This is part of the Hammondsport Firemen’s Carnival which starts on Thursday July 6. 

State Troopers Are Laxing Their Tatoo Rules 

State Police have revised their tattoo policy for those who want to join up as a Trooper.  According to NYSP officials, these days, just because you have a tattoo, does not disqualify you from becoming a state police officer.  Click here to find out more.
