Bath Gas Electric And Water officials say there will be some water testing done today on East Morris Street near East Steuben Street.  Bath Gas Electric And Water says, to run cold water for five minutes, if you get discolored water today, during the testing.

Talented 7th Grader Wins A NYS Music Award

Bath School Superintendent Kelly Houck says congratulations to Bath 7^th grader Griffin Enders, who was one of the winners of The New York State School Music Association Student Songwriter’s Showcase.  They say Griffin Enders won, with a song he wrote, called “Why”.

Three New County Lawmakers To Be Sworn In Tuesday

Coming up on Tuesday, three new Steuben County legislators will be sworn in at the Steuben County Legislature’s Organizational Meeting.  Corning Democrat Joe Tobia, Wayland Republican Shannon Logsdon, and Avoca Republican William Thew, were elected on November 7.  The three will take their oaths of office before joining 14 legislators on the Steuben County Board.  

New State Laws For 2024 Include Voting Laws 

One of the new laws that will go into effect on Monday, January 1, is Early Voting by Mail.  Election officials say, Early Voting  By Mail differs from Absentee voting in that, with absentee ballots by mail requires a reason (Are you disabled?  Are you out of the area?  Are you in the military?)  Whereas, early voting by mail does not require a reason to do early voting.   Some of the other new laws going into effect on January 1, 2024, are:  Minimum wage going up to $15.00 an hour January 1^st, the legal age for ATV drivers will go from age 10 to age 14, and stores have to have signs up, warning customers about the possibility of their credit card numbers being stolen. 

A New  Law Going Into Effect Jan 1, 2024, May Be A Problem

There’s a new state law which goes into effect January 1, that will make it so crime victims don’t have to show police evidence to get compensation from a company or individual.  Alfred Police Chief Paul Griffith is concerned that this new law will open the door to fraudulent claims.  Griffith cites, as just one example, a call he got from a phone company, about  a fake claim.  "I actually got a call from Verizon," Griffith said.  "Verizon sent me a copy of a a fake Alfred Police Report, about a cell phone, etc., which supposedly was stolen.  The police report was all ficticious," Griffith said.

Three Major Cases That Will Be In County Court In 2024

Accused Bath shooting suspect, Larry Shoonover, will also be in court January 4 at 2:00pm in front of Judge Chauncey Watches.  Former Addison Clerk/Treasurer Ursula Stone, who is accused of stealing, will be in court on April 17 at 1015am.  Steuben Co Sheriff Jim Allard's lawsuit against the county, will be in court January 4, at 2:00pm in front of Judge Jason Cook. 

The Governor Says No, To Taxpayer Funded Campaigns

The Albany Times Union and Empire Report New York are reporting that Governor Kathy Hochul, is vetoing campaign finance reform for elections.  Campaign financing is something they have in New York City, where taxpayer money matches political donations.  The governor’s reason for vetoing this proposal: Hochul said, it was going to be too expensive for the state.

Bath Police put out this reminder: New Year’s Eve is almost here, and please be careful with the fireworks that night.   Bath Police also say, don’t drink and drive and don’t mix alcohol use with fireworks. 

The Investigation Continues Into Route 13 Fire

Bath fire officials say the Steuben County Fire Investigation Team is looking into finding out the cause of the mobile home fire which happened Christmas Day on County Route 13.  Also, Elmira Police say, there were no injuries in a house fire which also happened Christmas Day on Walnut Street in Elmira. 

Troopers: Steuben Co Residents, Beware Of This Scam

State Police say two people in Steuben County have been scammed.  It was an online scam.  A pop up box showed up on their computers and said their bank accounts were compromised.  Troopers say if you see a pop up box like that on your computer, don’t click on it and don’t call any phone numbers the pop up box gives.  It’s a scam.  Also, anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call State Police Canandaigua at 585-398-4100.

Fire In Bth< Near Mitchellsville Monday Night 
There was a mobile home fire last night.  It happened in Bath, near Mitchellsville on County Route 13.  Officials say the mobile home was completely involved, when the Bath Volunteer Fire Department arrived.   Wvin is also told that a vehicle also caught on fire and a propane tank vented from the heat, but did not explode.  There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Steuben county fire investigation team.  Multiple fire departments were on standby during last night’s fire.

Corning Police Make Arrests In Alleged Meth Case

Corning Police did a no-knock warrant on Saturday.  They report  finding a lot of meth inside an apartment on Bridge Street in Corning, and charged a 33 year old male and a 32 year old woman, with 2^nd degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Corning Police say that the two were held, because they had prior convictions.  

Some Bills Signed Into Law, Some Not

Governor Kathy Hochul signed a law so that elections are held on even years.  Republicans are against this move, saying it will give an unfair advantage to Democrats to win elections.  The governor also signed a law, so that government officials will be able to see who runs LLC’s, that’s limited liability corporations.  The governor also came out against the ban on non competes.  The governor vetoed the ban on non compete agreements. 

Langworthy, Tenney,  etc,  Ask Hochul Not To Ban Natural Gas

Congressman Nick Langworthy and Congresswoman Claudia  Tenney sent off a letter to the governor, asking Hochul not to go along with the climate action council’s plans to get  rid of natural gas in New York S tate.

Over 200 New - New York State Police Officers For 2024

Governor Kathy says that 232 new State Troopers graduated from the 213th session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy yesterday. The ceremony was held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.

Steuben Co Litigation Update

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard’s lawsuit against the county over him having to pay for his own liability insurance out of pocket, that lawsuit originally was going to be in Steuben County Supreme Court yesterday.  However, it was adjourned to early January.

Steuben County Public Health Director Darlene Smith says there are, these days, about 26 lab confirmed covid cases a day in steuben county.  Darlene Smith also says, if you need home test kits, you can get free ones from your local library.

Bath Resident Was Honored During Bills Game 

Don’t know if you caught this past Sunday’s game but it’s worth noting that Alfred State Police Academy graduate and Bath native, Brent Nadjadi, from the class of ‘21, was recognized for his military service at the Buffalo Bills game versus the Dallas Cowboys.  Nadjadi earned the rank of Staff Sergeant in the United State Army prior to his retirement. He is currently a deputy with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. 

Two County Employees Recognized By County Lawmakers

Two Steuben County employees were recognized by the county Legislature for their service to county residents: Brandy Avery was recognized for 10 years of service and Bridget Ortiz was recognized for 15 years of service.  

Members Of The Sheriff's Dept Honored By Hammondsport Central School Yesterday Morning 

The Steuben County Sheriff's Office was honored yesterday morning at the Hammondsport Central School.  Hammondsport students and staff showed their appreciation to the Sheriff's Office for allowing them to visit the Public Safety Building for a holiday visit last week.   

Some Local Solar Projects, Are In The Works 

WVIN News has learned that a company called SWEB Renewables has begun soil testing in the areas of Addison, Erwin and Campbell.  Word is that SWEB Renewables plans on, if all goes well, beginning installation of solar farms in those areas, in several years.  
Statement From Drew Ferguson, SWEB Renewables: 

"We are still in fairly early stages of development of the project. We have not submitted for permits quite yet and are still in the diligence stages. Currently the plan is to submit for permits in mid-2024, and if all went according to plan, construction would start late 2026/early 2027 (due to permit review process)."

"Most Of The Officers Had Bodycams That Night"
Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker says the majority of law enforcement officers who were at the August standoff on Roosevelt Avenue in Bath, had police body-cameras on them.  "Almost all did," said D.A. Brooks Baker.  "There were around 19 or 20 State Police bodycams, there were multiple bodycams from the Bath P.D. and the sheriff's office, most of the other officers were wearing body cams.  We also had drones operating as well.  There are hours and hours and hours of video of this, including actual video of the shootout itself.  So there is a lot to look at, for the defense counsel and the jury," Baker stated.

Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer tells Mid Hudson News, that for the first time in New York State history, the state is getting more money back from Washington than the state puts in. Schumer says, that’s because of his work, as U.S. Senate Majority Leader.

Langworthy Objects To Colorado Court's Move On Trump

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy issued a statement objecting to the Colorado Courts blocking Donald Trump from getting on the ballot there.   "Today’s unprecedented Colorado Supreme Court decision is pure partisan election interference. The abuse of our justice system to obstruct President Trump’s widely-supported re-election campaign is a blatant assault on the very foundations of our democracy, disenfranchising millions of voters in the process. This outrageous ruling cannot be allowed to stand, and we will not be silent."

Update On The Avoca Shooting Victim

Officials say that the 47 year old Avoca shooting victim is in guarded condition at the Intensive Care Unit, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.   She’s expected to survive and there are surgeries that will be performed.

Brooks Baker Talks About The Howard Stabbing Victims

Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker says that two of the stabbing victims are said to have undergone much improvement at Strong Memorial Hospital.   Baker notes that it is expected that both will be out of the hospital, by tomorrow. 

Stabbing In Chemung County

Elmira Police report that a 45 year old resident there is charged with attempted murder, after allegedly stabbing someone in the abdomen.  The victim is said to be in critical condition.

Steuben County Thanks The Wineglass Mararthon 

"Coordination of local emergency services response in Steuben County will be upgraded thanks to a $50,000 donation from the Wineglass Race Series, county Public Safety Director Tim Marshall announced. The donation will help the county Office of Emergency Services replace an aging response vehicle used for the operations of mobile command, coordination, and communications throughout Steuben County, Marshall said. “The Steuben County Office of Emergency Services has worked with the Wineglass Marathon for many years to provide an effective and safe operation on race day. We are grateful for Wineglass to see the need to upgrade this critical resource and support local first responders with this donation,” Marshall said. The donation was recently accepted by the county Legislature which also approved a transfer of $60,000 from the Emergency Response budget to Major Equipment to complete the purchase of the command vehicle. Steuben’s Command Vehicle is an essential element in coordinating multi-departmental response to emergencies and large-scale incidents throughout the county. It also provides important support services during the annual and hugely popular Wineglass Marathon and other community events. A top destination race and the second largest marathon in New York State, the Wineglass Race Series also makes a dedicated effort to give back to the communities."

Over 3400 Wreaths Placed, At Bath National Cemetary

Republican State Senator Tom O’Mara says, over 3400 wreaths were put on gravestones at the Bath National Cemetery on Saturday.  The senator noted that Troop E State Police Officers attended the wreath laying ceremony in Bath, on Saturday afternoon.

Bath Village Officials To Hold Public Hearing At 5:30pm Today

The Bath village monthly meeting is going to be this evening at 5:30 and this meeting is being held at the Bath Electric Gas and Water offices.  On the agenda.  A public hearing about a where a legal marijuana store would be located in Bath, if these storse are approved for Bath.  

Steuben County Will Get Rain, But Not As Much As Chemung, Tompkins, Onondaga, Etc. Will Get  

Over the weekend, the National Weather Service announced that Steuben County was part of a Flood Watch that goes until tomorrow.  However, Meteorologist Rob Carolan says, the worst of the rain will be east of Steuben County.  "The heavy rain is off to our east," Carolan said this morning.  "It looks like it's going to hit Elmira, Ithaca and Syracuse hard, and in the Catskills and Adirondacks.  Steuben County will get hit with scattered showers on the backside of the system, but the really heavy rain will be to our east," Carolan said. 

Steuben County Lawmakers Are Getting Closer To Passing The Comprehensive Plan , Which Should Pass In 2024

This morning, the Steuben County Legislature, is expected to vote to take another step towards approving the county’s new comprehensive plan.  Specifically, county legislators are expected to approve the county’s lead agency status in the environmental review of the county’s Comprehensive Plan.  Officials say it’s expected that the comprehensive plan will be adopted next year.

Bath Man Charged, After Allegedly Telling Steuben County 9-1-1  Dispather, "Officer Down" 

Bath Village Police report  that the Steuben County 9-1-1 got  a call from someone saying that "an officer was down."  They say after that, the caller hung up.  Officials say the caller’s complaint was untrue.  Bath Police say they charged 34 year old Thomas Popps of Bath, with 3^rd degree falsely reporting an incident. 

Langworthy Comes Up With $150K For Hammondsport

On Friday, Congressman Nick Langworthy (R, 23) announced an Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Rural Development Grant for the Village of Hammondsport in the amount of $150,000. This grant will be used to construct a village-owned wastewater collection and treatment system to address needs in the business district.  “This investment in Hammondsport’s business district will increase opportunities for economic growth and enhance the overall quality of life for residents and businesses alike,” said Rep. Langworthy. “Access to reliable wastewater infrastructure is essential for the prosperity of our communities, and this grant is a crucial step in ensuring that our region remains a vibrant and thriving community for generations to come.”

“We are grateful for the support of the Appalachian Regional Commission and Congressman Nick Langworthy in securing these much-needed infrastructure dollars for the Village of Hammondsport,” said Mayor Jean Jensen. “This financial assistance will lead to the installation of over 4,000 feet of sewer lines and a septic system for the village square and downtown area. This project is a much-needed improvement, and a big boost to support our local businesses.”

Corning PD: Chase Goes From Corning Into Bath 

From Corning Police:  On Tuesday December 10, 2023 at approximately 1:50 am, uniformed members of the Corning City Police Department received the report of a stolen 2020 Chevrolet Trax taken from the Quail Bay apartments in the City of Corning. At approximately 5:00 am on 12/10/23 a Corning Police Officer located the vehicle traveling on N. Hamilton St. in the Village of Painted Post. Corning Police Officers attempted to stop the vehicle which led to a vehicle pursuit. Corning Police Officers pursued the vehicle in the Town of Erwin on State Route 415. The vehicle pursuit continued into the Town of Campbell and the Town of Bath before coming to an end on Irish Hill Rd in the Town of Bath. Officers arrested the operator of the stolen vehicle, Kaylee G. Brooks, at the scene and transported her to the Corning Police Department for arrest processing.

Corning Police Department arrested:

Kaylee G. Brooks, 25 of Corning NY 14830.

• 1 count of Grand Larceny 3^rd degree (D felony)

Ms. Brooks was processed at the Corning Police Department before being turned over to the Steuben County Jail for arraignment in Steuben County Centralized Arraignment Part (CAP) Court. Ms. Brooks was later arraigned in CAP court and released without bail. The Corning Police Department was assisted on scene by members of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office road patrol division.

Addison Man Facing Domestic Dispute/Vehicle Charges

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32 year old Devon Hough, of Addison, after an alleged domestic dispute.  Hough is accused of choking someone, and then driving a vehicle without the owner’s permission.  Hough was charged with Criminal Obstruction of Breathing and Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle.  Mr. Hough was arraigned and released.

Extra Patrols Are Out Throughout The Holidays

On orders from Governor Kathy Hochul, there is a high visibility stop DWI campaign, going on from now till January 1.  The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department is taking part in this, so are state police and numerous local law enforcement agencies. 

Bath Police Report Drug Arrests In Bath

Bath Village Police Chief Colin Taft reports that two Bath residents were charged, after a no-knock warrant at 46 West Steuben Street Apartment 201.  Police say the suspects, Leonard Storm, 54, and Grace Lanzetta, 40, have each been charged with 4^th degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  The drug in question, according to police, is crystal meth.  Bath Police say more charges may be made in this case.  The Bath P.D. was assisted by an investigator from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department. 

Welfare Fraud Allegations Out Of Woodhull

From The Steuben Co Sheriff's Dept:  Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on December 6th, 2023, Deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joseph P. Duell, age 54, of CR 101, Woodhull, New York. It is alleged that from January 2022 to November 2022, Mr. Duell knowingly and with intent to defraud, presented false documents to the Steuben County Department of Social Services and received benefits of $9,166 that he was not entitled to. Mr. Duell was charged with Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, a class E Felony, Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, a class E Felony and Grand Larceny in the Third degree, a class D Felony. Mr. Duell was arrested on a Superior Court Warrant issued by Steuben County Court. Mr. Duell was arraigned in Steuben County Court and released.  The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office.

The laying of the wreaths takes place today at the Bath National Cemetery.  Those who are attending the event, should arrive by 11:30am this morning.   It begins at 12:00 Noon.  

34 Year Old Bath Man Charged After 911 Call

Bath Village Police report  that the Steuben County 9-1-1 got  a call from someone saying that an officer  was down.  They say after that, the caller hung up.  Officials say the caller’s complaint was untrue.  Bath Police say they charged 34 year old Thomas Popps of Bath, with 3^rd degree falsely reporting an incident. 

Police: A Chase That Started In Corning, Ended in Bath

Corning Police are reporting on a chase that went from Corning, into Painted post, into Erwin and then Campbell and ended in Bath.  Corning Police say the suspect, Kaylee Brooks, 25, of Corning, is charged with Grand Larceny in the  Third Degree, and was arraigned and released without bail.  Corning Police were assisted by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Road Patrol in this chase. 

Woman Shot In Avoca, In Guarded Condition At Strong

FROM NYSP:  At approximately 8:40 p.m., the New York State Police from SP Bath responded to 8653 Wagner Hill Rd in the town of Avoca for a report of a female with a gunshot wound to the face.  A preliminary investigation revealed that Terry C. Long Jr., age 50, shot a 47-year-old female inside the residence. The female victim sustained a facial injury and was transported to Noyes Hospital, then was later transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital and is in guarded condition.

Long was charged with Assault 1st (B Felony) and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd (D Felony). Long was transported to Steuben County Jail for CAP arraignment.  This is an active investigation. 

UPDATE ON THE HOWARD STABBING INCIDENT 

FROM NYSP:  On December 10, 2023, New York State Police and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office responded to 2522 County Route 56 in the town of Howard for the report of an assault/stabbing.  A preliminary investigation reveals that several subjects were consuming alcohol when a physical altercation took place. Knives were introduced to the altercation, resulting in three males suffering knife wounds. The three males were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.  One of the subjects, Ausencio Roblero Lopez, was medically discharged on December 12, 2023. He was taken into custody for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd (D Felony) and brought to the Steuben County Jail for CAP arraignment. The other two subjects remain in stable condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.   The investigation is ongoing.

Bath Police Chief Colin Taft reports that 48 year old Joel Wandell of Bath, was recently charged with 2^nd degree strangulation and 3^rd Degree Assault.  

Cameron Man Is Facing Numerous Charges

From The Steuben Co Sheriff's Dept:

Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on December 12, 2023, deputies arrested James A. Margeson, age 35, of CR 10, Cameron, New York, following an investigation of a reported burglary and animal cruelty in the Town of Cameron. It is alleged that Mr. Margeson possessed stolen property, altered a vehicle identification number, and damaged stolen property. It is also alleged that Mr. Margeson failed to provide sustenance for four dogs which were subsequently rescued. Mr. Margeson was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree, a class D Felony, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree, a class E Felony, Forgery of a Vehicle Identification Number, a class E Felony, Tampering with Physical Evidence, a class E Felony, Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, a class D Felony, and Failure to Provide Sustenance to a Domestic Animal. Mr. Margeson was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released.

Big Street Fight Yesterday In Downtown Alfred

Over in Allegany County, Alfred Village Police report that yesterday, around 4:45pm they responded to a large fight in progress on West University Street.  The Alfred Police Department reports the arrest of 20-year old male from the South Bronx.  He was charged with two counts of Disorderly conduct for allegedly, physically fighting with another person and failing to obey a lawful order to disperse.

Gillibrand: On Making Sure That Senior Citizens Are Fed

Democrat US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says she’s worked it out so that one point two billion dollars is going to various programs, to feed senior citizens.   "As a member of the Senate Committee on Aging, I'm committeed to making sure that our older adults in New York State and across the country, can get the nutrition assistance and social interaction that they need to stay healthy," Gillibrand said yesterday.  "I've sent a bicameral letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee requesting over $2.5 billion dollars from the Older Americans Act, Title 3C, Nutrition Services Program."  

Langworthy: I'm Here To Help Veterans 

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy was interviewed by Brian O'Neil this morning, and the two spoke, among other things, about veterans issues.  "I want to tell any veterans out there that we are here to help," Langworthy said.  "If you need help with your veterans benefits, if you're trying to sort out a matter, we have case workers ready, willing and able to assist.  We have offices in Corning, Olean, Jamestown and Clarence, and we have a professional staff ready to help you with your issues, medicare, social security, no problem is too big and no problem is too small." 

Auction Ends At Noon Today For Old National Bath Hotel

It’s almost over.  This posting is being made at 10:12am, and the online auction for 13 East Steuben Street in Bath, the old National Bath Hotel, that auction is scheduled to end at 12:00 Noon today.  When we checked in with the spokesperson for Williams and Williams Auctions in the 9am hour thiis morning, she said that there had not been an opening bid as of yet. 

LOCAL MAN GOING BACK TO PRISON ON NEW CHARGES

FROM THE U.S. ATTORNEYS OFFICE: 

U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that Ryan Hamilton, 32, of Bath, NY, who was convicted of possession of child pornography by an individual with a prior conviction, was sentenced to serve 162 months in prison and 15 years supervised release by U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa. Hamilton was also ordered to pay $18,000 in restitution to victims.  Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan K. McGuire, who handled the case, stated that in August 2016 and again in September 2017, Hamilton was convicted in Steuben County Court of Possessing Sexual Performance by Child Less than 16. In October 2019, while being supervised by New York State Parole, Hamilton possessed approximately 87 videos and 1,124 images of child pornography on an SD card. Some of the images and videos included children under the age of 12 and depictions of violence.  The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Miraglia, the New York State Police, under the direction of Major Eugene Staniszewski, and the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, under the direction of under the direction of Acting Commissioner Daniel F. Martuscello III.

Schumer: Hanukkah Comes At A Moment Of Grief 

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer says, this year, "Hanukkah comes at a moment of grief, trial and fear for the Jewish people.  Schumer says, at the Congressional Menorah Lighting yesterday he was joined by the Bibas family, whose family members are being held hostage by Hamas. "  Schumer also says, we won’t stop until all hostages are released. 

Dems Undo Steuben Co Judge's Special Master Maps 

On Tuesday, the New York State Democrats won their lawsuit in the State Court of Appeals.  Because of this court victory, Democrats will be able to draw up the new maps for House of Representatives district lines, for New York State.  Governor Kathy Hochul and State Attorney General Tish James issued a joint statement, saying quote, “Yesterday’s redistricting decision will ensure all New Yorkers are fairly and equitably represented by elected officials.” The statement goes on to say, “We will continue our efforts to protect voting rights for all New Yorkers.”  Republican Assemblyman Phil Palmesano, disagrees.  “Instead of accepting the fair and competitive lines drawn by the Special Court Master that were used in the 2022 elections, Democrats have decided the lines needed to be redrawn because they lost control of Congress,” Palmesano stated. 

It's The National Guard's 387th Birthday Today

Assemblyman Palmesano also says, it’s the National Guard’s birthday.  The National Guard has been around, since the year 1636.  The first National Guard was formed in the state of Massachusetts.

Palmesano's Rural Equity Forum, Yesterday In Bath 

Assemblyman Phil Palmesano held a forum about small towns, yesterday afternoon in Bath.  "We had about 20 stakeholders from different industies," Palmesano tells WVIN.  "From education, to economic development, mental health, municipal officials, the sheriff was there, we had broadband and internet providers - a whole host of people who came, to share their thoughts on life, and the opportunities we have here, in smaller communities," Palmesano stated.  

Langworthy Talks About Bath VA, In Washington D.C. 

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy spoke on the House Floor recently ,about how he was at the Bath VA earlier this year, with VFW State Commander Dan Pell.   "I had the privilege of touring the Bath VA Medical Center with him," Langworthy stated.  "Witnessing firsthand Pell's tireless committment that the veterans receive the care and support that they deserve," Langworthy stated.  

Wreath Laying Is This Saturday, At Bath National Cemetary

Volunteers are needed for the Wreaths Across America Day ceremony and wreath laying event at the Bath National Cemetery on Saturday, December 16.  The public is invited to attend the wreath-laying ceremony that begins at noon and participate in the placing of the wreaths immediately following the ceremony. Attendees are recommended to arrive by 11:30 am where they can walk to the cemetery from the parking area or take the shuttle. You might want to carpool,to limited parking. MInimum Wage Increase Starts With The New Year 2024

Minimum wage is going up to $15.00 an hour, starting January 1.  That’s according to Governor Kathy Hochul.  That particular minimum wage increase was passed in the spring 2023 state budget. 

Update On The Sunday Morning Stabbings In Howard

Our news department caught up with Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker this morning, about the stabbing on Route 56 In Howard, in the midnight hour, Sunday morning.  "What we know right now," Baker told WVIN this morning, "is that three people were injured in that bad situation in Howard, early Sunday morning.  There are a lot of witnesses to be interviewed, it is a difficult investigation.  The biggest issue slowing things down right now, is that the three people who were involved in the stabbing situtation, were all injured at different levels, and had to be treated at area hospitals.  We have to interview them before we can go forward with the case.  Obviously they cannot speak to law enforcement until they are healthy enough to do so, and we're hopeful this will happen soon.   Additionally, we're also seeking evidence regarding medical records, about the injuries.  Obviously, the investigation is ongoing, and State Police are dedicating tremendous resources to this case, and I'm sure we'll have answers very soon," Baker said.  

Shop With  A Cop 2023: A Big Success In Steuben County 

On Saturday morning there were two, Shop With a Cop events in Steuben County, one in Hornell and one in Erwin.  Sheriff Jim Allard says, deputies and local law enforcement from Corning, shopped with 21 families in Erwin, and deputies and law enforcement from Hornell, Canisteo and Alfred, shopped with 70 families in Hornell. 

NYS Dems Want To Undo Steuben Co Judge's Map Ruling

In April of 2022, Steuben County Judge Pat McAllister ruled that new congressional maps should be drawn.  There’s a Democrat lawsuit that was heard on November 15 by the New York State Court of Aappeals, a lawsuit that calls for the Court to throw out the current congressional district maps (the maps that McAllister ordered).  A decision by the Court of Appeals is expected sometime soon.  Corning Republican Assemblyman says while he’s opposed to the Democrats lawsuit, he says in all likelihood, our Congressman, Nick Langworthy’s seat on the map, won’t be affected.  "I would think the congressional lines in the 23rd congressional district will look pretty much the same as it is, for the most part that district will be in tact," Palmesano said this morning.  

There Were Several Stabbings Early This AM, In Steuben Co

 State Police are handling the investigation of an incident/incidents, in which several people were stabbed, during the overnight hours, in Steuben County.  At least three people were being treated this morning for injuries, though there are online fb posts indicating that more than three people were stabbed.  The names of the suspect/suspects, and victims, have not been released as of yet.

FROM NYSP:  New York State Police are investigating an incident where multiple individuals were stabbed on County Route 56 in the town of Howard, Steuben County. There is no threat to the public at this time.  This is an active and ongoing investigation.  As more information becomes available, the New York State Police Newsroom will be updated.

Yates County Sheriff : An Accident In Penn Yan

The Yates County Sheriff’s Department reports that there was a two vehicle collision in the Town of Jerusalem.A 65 year old Penn Yan man was taken to Strong Memorial in Rochester. A 43 year old Branchport man was taken to Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan.

Santas Day Off Is Going On Now In Bath

From now until 6pm this evening, it’s Santa’s Day Off at the Bath Fire Station.  Wvin is at the Bath Volunteer Fire Department, collecting new, unwrapped toys, as part of Santa’s Day Off today.

Campbell Savona To Host A Town Meeting About Electric School Buses, O'Mara And Palmesano Will Be There

Campbell Savona Central is having a community meeting on Thursday January 11 at 7pm, about the state making schools switch to electric buses. Senator O’Mara and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano will be on the panel discussing this.

Governor Kathy Hochul: Flu Numbers Are Up Statewide

Governor Kathy Hochul says the number of flu cases is up 25 percent in just one week.  Steuben County Public Health Director Darlene Smith says, sometime on Friday, the county public health office will be getting the numbers of Flu cases, here in Steuben County.

Langworthy Votes Against EPA Changing Vehicle Motors

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy is voting for House Resolution 4468, to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from changing rules on emissions from cars. Langworthy says, it was unelected bureaucrats at the EPA, who passed the rule, which will go into effect in 2027.

A New Report From The State Noted That Many NYC Residents Left During The Pandemic
State Comptroller Tom Dinapoli issued a report which talks about how a lot of people left New York City during the pandemic.  In the report, which was released yesterday, Dinapoli says 1 out of 100 New York City residents left the state in 2020.

A New Internship Program In Which SUNY Students Are Hired As Paid Interns By State Offices/Agencies 

Governor Kathy Hochul says the SUNY College system is going to be offering paid internships, to have SUNY students, go to work for the D.E.C., the Office of Parks and Recreation, NYSERDA and other offices and agencies.  The governor says in year one of the internship program, 40 SUNY students will be selected.
 

Number Of Cases Steuben Co Handled In November 2023 

Sheriff Jim Allard says, in November, investigators and deputies handled eight death investigations, two assault cases, one unlawful imprisonment investigation, a burglary investigation, a missing person case, one endangering the welfare of a child investigation, one fire investigation, seven larceny investigations, three grand larceny investigations, six harassment investigations, two reckless endangerment investigations, seven criminal mischief investigations, two impersonation investigations, one terroristic threat investigation, two animal cruelty investigations, eight narcotics investigations, three leaving the scene of a crash investigations and one fugitive from justice investigation. 

More Wind Projects Are Coming To Steuben County

We caught up yesterday, with Steuben County IDA Director Jamie Johnson, who says the Barron Wind Phase II which is in Fremont is in the final stages of getting the approval process.  Jamie Johnson says Barron Wind hopes to double the size of the Fremont area wind project in 2024.  As for Canisteo, the County IDA says the Canisteo wind project will likely happen in 2025.  Also, according to the County IDA Director, Hartsville and Prattsburgh and Avoca are also looking at setting up wind projects.  "They are just in the early stages of development and are probably two to three years out," Johnson tells WVIN.  Terra Gen is working on talking with property owners in Prattsburgh and Avoca.  "Avoca is going to be included in that project scope as well," said Johnson.  

Update On The Addison Village Hall Case

Ursula Stone, the former Addison Village clerk/treasurer, is accused of stealing over a million dollars from Addison Village Hall.  A Steuben County Court official says that Ursula Stone is set to be in the courtrooom on December 14^th at 1:30pm. 

Bath Standoff Suspect Has An Upcoming Court Date

Larry Schoonover is the 51 year old Bath suspect who is accused of firing gunshots at law enforcement during a standoff back in August on Roosevelt Avenue in Bath.  Schoonover is scheduled to be in court on December 20 at 11am on that day.  This will be a motions argument on December 20. 

It Was On This Day, That A Trooper Was Killed In Corning

Today is the anniversary of the death of State Police Investigator Robert VanHall.  VanHall was shot and killed in Corning on December 5, 1980, as he and his partner were about to arrest two brothers for cocaine and marijuana charges.  Trooper Robert VanHall was also a Vietnam Veteran who was in the Green Berets.  He was 35 years old when he was killed in Corning in 1980.

Three White Males Wanted, By Chemung Co Sheriff 

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the assistance of the public in identifying the individuals depicted in the attached photos. All three males are suspects in a larceny at the Best Buy store in Big Flats.  Anyone with information, or believes they may know these men, is asked to contact the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at (607)737-2933.

20 Year Old Bath Male, Facing Charges, After Allegedly  Threatening Someone With A Realistic Looking AIrgun

Bath Village Police report that Nicholas Harrison, 20, Bath, is charged for allegedly threatening someone with "what appeared to be a pistol"  The alleged incident is said to have happened on November 28 on Howell Street, Bath.  The two charges against Harrison are 4th Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon and 2nd Degree Menacing.  Bath Police also say that Harrison was said to have been found in possession of a black airsoft  gun.  

Joint Statement From The County And The Deputies Union

Steuben County and the Deputies Association of the County of Steuben are pleased to announce the finalization of a multi-year contract for our sworn law enforcement officers. With unanimous support from the County Legislature and a successful vote of the Association, this contract will cover the years of 2021-2024, providing these staff members with both fair retroactive pay increases and competitive salaries for the coming year.
“The Deputies Association of the County of Steuben would like to thank County administration for sitting down with us to find a resolution for fair and competitive salaries,” said Association President Matthew Sorge. “We would also like to thank the County Legislature for the unanimous vote for the approval of these fair and competitive wages. Erie County Woman Charged For Allegedly Trying To Kidnap Two Babies Here In Steuben County

Steuben County District  Attorney Brooks Baker reports that Mary Beth H. Lewis, 66, of the Erie County Town of Elma, is charged with Attempted 2^nd degree Kidnapping, 2^nd Degree Forgery, 1^st Degree Falsifying Business Records and numerous other charges, including 2^nd degree perjury.  She is accused of attempting to take custody of two infant children born in Steuben County, who were born in what’s being described as a fraudulent surrogacy agreement in Steuben County.  The 66 year old Erie County woman is pleading not guilty to all the charges.  

Gov. Kathy Hochul: Funding For Jasper Road Repairs

Governor Kathy Hochul says, $400,000 is going towards a project  to resurface Route 417 in Jasper.  A total of 66 roads statewide, are getting funding for this sort of work.

Santa's Day Off Is Happening This Thursday In Bath

On Thursday of this week, December 7, WVIN will be having an all day event called Santa’s Day Off, at the Bath Fire Department.  It’s going to go from 7am to 6pm Thursday.   WVIN will be at the Bath fire department and will be collecting toys for kids that day. 

Wreaths Across America Ceremony At Bath Nat'l Cemetary

Coming up on On Saturday, December 16, at noon, there will be the Wreaths Across America ceremony at the Bath National Cemetery.  They say that in 2022, more than 3,700 wreaths were placed on Veterans' graves in Bath. 

LECTURE ON FORMER NYS GOV AL SMITH, EVOLUTION LAWYER WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN, TODAY IN BATH

Theres a talk being given about three major American historical figures who were influential in religion in America.  That will be held at 4pm today at the Bath Fire Department.  It’s happening in conjunction with the Steuben County Historical Society. 

CHRISTMAS PARADE TONIGHT AT 600 IN BATH

The Spirit of Christmas parade, with Santa, is happening this evening in Bath.  According to the Central Steuben Chamber of Commerce, there will be, in addition to the parade, a visit with Santa Claus, horse drawn wagon rides, dancing elves and the lighting of the tree.   Again, the holiday fun, begins at 6:00 this evening.

JASON CHABOT SENTENCED TO A DOZEN YEARS

Jason Chabot, who had Canisteo and Savona addresses, has been sentenced to 12 years in a state prison and 20 years of Post Release Supervision based upon his conviction of a jury trial, for the crime of First Degree Sexual Abuse.  According to D.A. Brooks Baker, the victim was a seven year old girl.  "It happened during the Covid lockdowns, and the victim, because of her age, and the nature of the acts, didn't report it for almost two years," Baker said.  "I'm not sure any sentence is long enough for someone who sexually offends against a child because the harm can never be undone." 

UPDATE ON BATH CENTRAL CAPITAL PROJECT

School Superintendent Kelly Houck says We are anticipating final approval of the scope of the work associated with Phase II from the State Education Department any day. Once received we will go out to bid and then hopefully award the bids associated with the work by the end of January. Houck says that they anticipate the work starting on February 16th or shortly thereafter. “Phase II work focuses on the VEW building many renovations and upgrades to instructional spaces including the addition of a STEAM suite and office reconfigurations and most importantly security upgrades. Additionally there will be site improvements including some outdoor play area upgrades. Much of this work will take place on the 2nd shift minimizing the interruptions to the school day.”

TOYS FOR TOTS EVENTS ARE TOMORROW IN STEUBEN Coming up on Saturday, December 2, 10am to noon, the sheriff’s department is having the toys for tots Events in the Walmart parking lots in Erwin and Hornell.  Deputies will be collecting clothing and supplies and toys for those who could use them at Christmas.
