Tyrtle Beach Is Tomorrow, Friday, April 24

The Tyrtle Beach Event, is coming up Friday.  This year, five local school superintendents, will jump into Lake Salubria.  It’s a longtime annual fundraiser for the youth in Central and Eastern Steuben County. 

 

Bath  Names A Baseball Field After Coach Benn Joseph

From The Bath School District: The newly renovated high school baseball field at the Haverling Bus Garage in Bath will be officially dedicated on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, in a ceremony honoring the late Bennett C. Joseph, a man whose influence has shaped generations of local athletes.   The field will bear the name of Benn Joseph, a longtime Bath Little League coach whose impact spans more than five decades. Known throughout the community for his dedication to youth baseball, “Coach Benn” coached hundreds of players and became a defining figure in the development of the sport at the local level. His coaching resume also included over 10 years of assisting the Haverling Boys Basketball Program at the modified and JV level in the 2000’s and 2010’s.

All are welcome to the dedication ceremony, which will be held prior to a game on May 6th at 4:30pm vs Penn Yan. A ceremonial first pitch will be tossed by Joseph’s grandson, and caught by Bob Gelder, a longtime friend and mentee of Joseph. The dedication ceremony will bring together students, families, alumni, and community members to celebrate both the new facility and Joseph’s enduring legacy.

 

Addison Bank Robbery Suspect Allegedly Commits Assault

From The Sheriff's Dept:

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on April 22, 2026, Deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dominick W. Bova, age 31, of First Street, Corning, New York, following a report of a Steuben County Inmate attacking another Inmate.  It is alleged that Mr. Bova intentionally injured another person while incarcerated in the Steuben County Jail. Mr. Bova was charged with Assault in the Second Degree, a class D Felony.  Mr. Bova was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and returned to the jail.

 

The Emilee's Challenge Trailer Is Back Again

Sheriff Jim Allard says, with Spring being here, the Emilee’s Challenge Trailer is out of the winter storage and visiting schools.  This past Tuesday, the Emiliee’s Challenge Trailer was at Jasper Troupsburg Central.  Representing the sheriff’s department were: 9-1-1 Dispatcher Kim Clark, Deputy Butler and School Resource Officer Mahoney.  The Emilee’s Challenge Trailer, as you know, is taken around the county and even different parts of the state, to show videos of actual distracted driving and DWI related accidents.  The sheriff says quote, “The Trailer serves as a reminder of the life-altering consequences of reckless driving.  Interested in getting a presentation?  Call the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office at 607-622-3911.

 

Wayland Police Announce E Bike/E Scooter Rules

From The Wayland P.D.:

With Springtime we’re seeing more e-bikes and scooters around the village. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe and on the right side of the law:

Parents/Guardians: You’re responsible for your kids’ compliance. Don’t allow illegal operation.

Age: Must be 16+ to operate or ride. No one may allow a rider under 16.

Passengers: One rider only. No passengers.

Where to ride: Roads with speed limits of 30 MPH or less. No sidewalks.

Speed: Up to 15–30 MPH depending on device.

Safe operation:

• Keep at least one hand on the handlebars

• Don’t carry items that block your view

• Yield to pedestrians

• Ride single file on roadways

Equipment: Front white light and rear red light (at night), bell/audible signal, working brakes.

Helmets: Required for ages 16 to 17.

Alcohol/Drugs: Operating under the influence is illegal.

Crashes: If there’s an injury, you must stop and report it.

Reminder:

• Do not attach to moving vehicles

• Stay to the right unless turning/avoiding hazards

Violations can result in fines and enforcement.

Horseheads Teen Charged After Alleged Gun Incident

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of a 17-year-old male juvenile from Elmira, for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C Felony, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, a Class E Felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor, Menacing in the Second Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor and Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor.

On April 16, 2026, the School Resource Officer assigned to the Alternative High School of the GST BOCES Bush Campus in the Town of Horseheads began an investigation regarding alleged threats involving a firearm. The SRO was able to determine that there was no threat to the campus at that time, but developed information regarding the juvenile having possession of a loaded handgun and having used it in the commission of a crime on the morning of April 15, 2026. The Criminal Investigation Division of the Sheriff’s Office was notified and became involved in the investigation. It was determined that the juvenile had pointed the loaded gun at another juvenile and threatened to kill that person. After further investigation, a search was executed, in cooperation with the City of Elmira Police Department, GIVE investigators, at the home of the juvenile in the City of Elmira, and a loaded .45 caliber handgun was recovered from the juvenile’s room at that time.

As a result of the investigation, the juvenile was arrested, arraigned in the Youth Part of Chemung County Court, and released.

 

Grand Opening For Curtiss Park Is Slated For May 16

The grand opening of Curtiss Park in Hammondsport, will be taking place on May 16.   Hammondsport Central School officials say, their sophmore class planted some beautiful daffodils there, to help celebrate. 

 

Langworthy's Anti-Green New Deal Bill Is Going Places

Congressman Nick Langworthy today announced that the House has passed his Reliable Federal Infrastructure Act, legislation to eliminate Green New Deal style federal building mandates that drive up construction costs, delay projects, and reduce energy reliability in federal infrastructure. The bill passed the House last night 215-202 with five Democrats and one independent joining Republicans in favor of the legislation.
