An Alleged Shooting Incident In The Town Of Bath 

FROM SHERIFF JIM ALLARD:  Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on September 27, 2025, Deputies and Investigators of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jason M. Christian, age 39, of Shattuck Road, Bath, New York, following the investigation of a report of a person being shot at during a child custody exchange in the Town of Bath. It is alleged that Mr. Christian fired multiple rifle rounds at the victim, striking his vehicle, while the victim was inside the vehicle. Mr. Christian subsequently turned himself in and was charged with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a class C Felony, Criminal Use of a Firearm in the First Degree, a class B Felony, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, a Class E Felony and Menacing in the Second Degree, a class A Misdemeanor. Mr. Christian was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and remanded to the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

Sheriff Allard thanks the New York State Police and the Canisteo Village Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.

 

No Left Turns On West Washington In Certain Hours

Bath Police say to please take note of the new traffic control device as you exit the school loop off of Keller Street.  Officials say that left turns onto West Washington Street are prohibited from 7:30am-8:30am and 2:30pm-3:30pm to keep traffic moving and reduce accidents in the area. 

 

A Fatal Domestic Dispute In Chemung County Yesterday

FROM NYSP:   On September 28, 2025, at approximately 2:58 p.m., the New York State Police and a Chemung County Sheriff's Deputy responded to Rotary Road in the town of Chemung for a reported active physical domestic incident.

Upon arrival, a State Trooper located a female victim being menaced in the living room. The suspect, identified as Nathan J. Novakowski, age 18, of Chemung, NY, was physically threatening the victim with a pair of scissors.

The Trooper issued several commands for Novakowski to drop the weapon in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Novakowski became increasingly agitated and attempted to stab the victim. To prevent imminent harm to the victim, the Trooper discharged his division-issued firearm, fatally striking Novakowski.

The female victim sustained minor injuries and was treated by Greater Valley Ambulance at the scene. 

The incident remains under investigation by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the New York State Attorney General's Office, in accordance with New York State law.

This is an ongoing investigation. 

 

A Cornell Cooperative Extension Event This Evening In Bath

Steuben County Master Gardener Volunteers is having an event this evening at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Permaculture Learning Garden in Bath.  It’s a Beginners Seed Saving Workshop.  All ages are welcome, those 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required so please call (607) 664-2568 to register.  That’s from 5:45pm to 6:30pm this evening.

 

Ramp Closure On I-86 In Corning, Today And Tomorrow

The New York State Department of Transportation says Exit 46 in Corning is closed 6pm to 6am today and tomorrow.  D.O.T. officials say there will be detour signs and traffic delays because of this ramp being closed.
