A Charters Of Freedom Event, Last Night In Bath
By Steuben Co Spokesman Eddie VanStine
On the evening of Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the heart of Steuben County stood still for a moment in reverence, unity, and pride as the community gathered at historic Pulteney Park in Bath to witness the sealing of a generational gift to the future—a Freedom Time Capsule within the Charters of Freedom monument.
This powerful ceremony marked a significant milestone for the region. The time capsule, carefully curated by members of the current generation, was placed as a message of hope, values, and shared dreams for those who will open it decades from now. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the people of Steuben County, and a symbol of their commitment to freedom, history, and the continuation of civic responsibility.
Representatives from the Charters of Freedom organization offered moving remarks, emphasizing the importance of preserving the legacy of our founding documents and instilling pride and purpose in the next generation. Their words reminded all in attendance that while we honor our past, it is the future we build today that will matter most tomorrow.
Among the notable guests and speakers were Steuben County Legislature Chairwoman Kelly Fitzpatrick, Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler, and Village of Bath Mayor Mike Sweet—all of whom delivered powerful and heartfelt messages of leadership, perseverance, and unity. Each highlighted how this project embodies the values of our community and reflects the best of what we stand for as a people and as a nation.
"Freedom isn't just something we inherit—it’s something we preserve, protect, and pass on,” said Chairwoman Fitzpatrick. “This capsule will serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder that each generation plays a role in keeping the flame of liberty alive."
The Freedom Time Capsule will remain sealed at the base of the Charters of Freedom monument in Pulteney Park until a future generation is called upon to open it, reflect on our era, and continue writing the next chapter of the American story.
As the sun set over Bath, one thing became clear: the legacy of freedom is alive and well in Steuben County—and its future is in good hands.
