FROM BEGWS:  Tonight in the Village of Bath, New York , Tuesday, December 10, the BEGWS (Bath, Electric, Gas, Water Systems) will be having their monthly meeting. The meeting will be held at their facility, 7 South Avenue in the Village of Bath at 4:30pm.  Please note, these meetings are averagely made up of 1/4 amount of time is the public meeting & 3/4 amount of time is executive meeting. The meeting does open back up to a public meeting after the executive meeting.

 County Legislature Waives Civil Service Exam Fees for 2025

The Steuben County Legislature has approved a measure to waive the $15.00 Civil Service exam fees for 2025. This decision, presented by Nate Alderman, Director of Personnel, was passed during a recent legislative meeting. The waiver is part of the county's ongoing efforts to streamline and encourage participation in the civil service hiring process, aligning with practices seen across New York State.

As part of the regular procedures in many counties, Civil Service exam fees are traditionally charged to help cover the costs of administering the exams. However, Steuben County's decision to waive this fee for the 2025 cycle aims to reduce barriers for potential candidates seeking government positions, ensuring greater accessibility and fairness for all applicants.

“This move to waive the Civil Service exam fees is an important step toward making county employment more accessible to the public," said Nate Alderman. "By removing this cost, we hope to encourage a more diverse range of individuals to apply for positions in local government."

The $15.00 fee, which is a standard practice across the state, will not be required for the upcoming exams. The fee waiver is expected to benefit numerous prospective candidates by reducing the financial burden associated with applying for civil service positions.

 

Inflation Refund Checks For New Yorkers?  Maybe...

Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul is proposing the possibility  of an inflation refund check for New York State residents.  The exact amount, is not out yet, but this is an idea the governor is considering.

 

Hammondsport Central School's Capital Project Update

The Hammondsport Central School is having their capital project vote, this coming Thursday. Voting hours on Thursday will be from Noon until 8:00pm.

 

Brooks Baker: The State Is Overfunding Defense Attorneys

According to Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker, New York State government, is unfairly taking sides in funding half of the legal world against the other side.  The D.A. says, the state is on the one hand, giving a lot of funding to defense attorneys, and less to prosecutors in D.A.’s offices.  Baker says the end result is, the Steuben County Public Defenders Office has one and a half times the size of the D.A.’s office staff and the D.A. says, the District Attorneys Office has a larger case load.   Our news department also reached out to Shawn Sauro, the chief public defender for Steuben County.  As soon as we get Attorney Sauro’s response, we will publish it.
