Another Meeting In Avoca - This One Is Friday Night

Update On Prattsburgh Wind Farm Project Plans

From Governor Kathy Hochul: "The New York State Office of Renewable Energy Siting and Electric Transmission has issued final siting permits for the Rich Road Solar Energy Center and Prattsburgh Wind LLC projects. The solar farm and the wind farm, located in St. Lawrence County and Steuben County, respectively, will bring a combined 387 megawatts of clean, renewable energy to New York’s electric grid, powering more than 123,000 average-sized homes. Both facilities will contribute significantly to the State’s ambitious climate goals while providing economic benefits to local communities.  The Prattsburgh wind farm, a 147 MW wind project spanning the Towns of Prattsburgh, Avoca, Cohocton, Howard, and Wheeler in Steuben County, will produce enough power for an estimated 62,000 homes according to its developers."

The Prattsburgh Wind Farm website states that between 35 and 40 wind turbines will be built, in the involved towns (Prattsburgh, Avoca, Cohocton, Howard and Wheeler).

From Steuben County Industrial Development Agency Director Jamie Johnson: "While this is a great milestone for the project, they are still waiting for a power purchase contract from NYSERDA before they can move forward with construction.  This process could take another year resulting in construction beginning this time next year."

Governor Hochul: The Reasons Behind My Cell Phone Rules

In a statement where she explained her reasons for stricter cell phone rules in grade schools and high schools, Governor Kathy Hochul says, she wants kids to be kids again and to learn social skills in school  – something the governor says is happening less and less – because of constant cell phone use by the youth in school settings.

From Governor Hochul:  "First of all, many parents on their own have said they know how bad it is. They've seen their children, especially if they were able to get a cell phone at age 12, 13, 14, they turn into a different person. First of all, they lose the capacity over time to have real, genuine social interactions. They don't make eye contact. They don't talk to other students. In school, the cafeteria is silent. They're silent when they're in the schoolyard. They're silent in the halls. And the school districts that – on their own – were courageous enough to ban them said they now hear children laughing, talking, even arguing, they're communicating more.  And it was stopped. It was a dead silence. It was so unnatural. So, I had to get teachers on board, that was the easiest one. 72 percent of teachers across this country say that they are tired of the distractions and their inability to communicate with students or make connections in a way that are positive relationships."
