Tragic Fatal Accident In The Town Of Wayland

On September 12, 2024, troopers from SP Wayland responded to a motorcycle versus a car on State Route 63 in the town of Wayland. A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Chappy Yamaha motorcycle operated by an 18-year-old male was traveling southbound on State Route 63 when it passed an uninvolved vehicle in a no-passing zone. The motorcycle struck a 2015 Kia Sorento traveling northbound, operated by Helen Bertalon, age 73, of Dansville, NY, head-on, causing the 18-year-old to be ejected from the motorcycle. Bertalon was transported by Springwater-Wayland ambulance to UR Medicine Noyes Hospital for minor injuries. The 18-year-old was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Sweet's Statement About T Mobile $50,000 Grant
As Wvin has been reporting since yesterday, the Village of Bath is getting a sizeable grant from T-Mobile to upgrade Pulteney Park’s electrical infrastructure, This is for the Pulteney Park’s event space. “Being awarded the T-Mobile grant will allow the village to make more upgrades to Pultney Park, the center of our Historic District," Mayor Michael Sweet said yesterday. "I can't thank T-Mobile and all of those responsible for making this happen enough!” A special event and check presentation will be held on Saturday, September 21 at 12 Noon at Steuben County Fairgrounds in Bath.
Dana Lyons School Update From Governor Hochul
Governor Kathy Hochul says, the state is giving Providence Housing Development Corporation $1.9 million dollars to build eight apartment units at the old Dana Lyons School in Bath. The governor says, these apartments will be for those with mental illness or substance abuse order that has led to them becoming homeless. Governor Hochul also says there will be on site laundry services, an exercise room, a community room, a playground and outdoor greenspace. Catholic Charities will be involved with onsite support services.
Chenango County Man Is Charged With 2nd Degree Rape

The New York State Police in Bath arrest Daniel Erickson, age 55, of Greene, NY, after a several months investigation into a rape allegation. On February 29, 2024, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation received a law enforcement referral from the New York State Department of Social Services child abuse hotline, with the source of the report being the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Subsequent to an investigation, it was determined the sexual assault occurred in Steuben County, where Erickson met with the 14-year-old victim in October 2022. On September 10, 2024, the New York State Police received a Superior Court Warrant of Arrest for Erickson that was issued on the charges of Rape 2nd (D Felony) and Endangering the Welfare of a Child (A Misdemeanor). The warrant was issued on September 3, 2024, and signed by Honorable Chauncey J. Watches. Erickson was processed at SP Bath and taken to Steuben County Jail for CAP arraignment, where he was set a $5000.00 cash and $10,000 bond. Erickson posted bail and was released.
State Police Labor Day Road Campaign Results
State Police put out the numbers on the tickets troopers issued during Labor Day weekend. In our region, state police issued 21 tickets for DWI, 332 speeding tickets, 26 tickets for distracted driving, 7 tickets for move over violations, and 112 tickets for child restraint seatbelt violations.
