Program Coordinator BATH – The Steuben County Legislature will be recognizing the 40th anniversary of the county Youth In Government (YIG) program during a brief ceremony at the beginning of the Legislative session set for 10 am, Monday, Oct. 23. A unique program in the state, YIG has introduced hundreds of high school juniors and seniors throughout the county to local governmental operations, departments and issues. The students then hold a simulated legislative session during which they present and vote on resolutions they have developed as a result of their participation. “We know many county residents have been involved in YIG since it started in 1983,” said county Youth Bureau Coordinator Bill Caudill. “We have been told it has provided a better understanding of Steuben’s government, led to active involvement in their communities and developed leadership skills that have served them well.” Caudill said he wants to inform YIG alumni of the program and encourage them to attend the short formal recognition on Oct. 23. “Regardless of whether they can attend the meeting,” he said. “We want them to know they are a testament to the value and longevity of Youth In Government.” Alumni are encouraged to contact the Youth Bureau to share their memories and how the program impacted their careers by emailing BCaudill@SteubenCountyNY.gov.
