Heat Advisory Continues to 7pm Tonight
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Steuben County in effect until 7pm. Heat index values up to 98 are expected. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

 

Corning Inc & United Way Make Steuben County Flood Response Fund
United Way of the Southern Tier and the Corning Incorporated Foundation have teamed up and created a $75,000 Steuben County Flood Response Fund. United Way of the Southern Tier President & CEO Stephen M. Hughes said the two groups are working with local non-profit partners to establish the fund quickly to help those who need it most. The United Way says the Steuben County Flood Response Fund is for families and individuals impacted by recent flooding in the towns of Tuscarora, Woodhull, Jasper, Troupsburg, Canisteo, Greenwood, and West Union. The Funding will help where other resources do not exist, are limited, or may not be readily available.  Individuals and families must apply through participating non-profit agencies including the American Red Cross, Arbor Housing & Development, Catholic Charities of Steuben & Livingston and Pro Action of Steuben and Yates, Inc. Send donations to support flood victims to United Way of the Southern Tier, P.O. Box 284, Elmira, NY 14902. Make checks payable to “UWST Steuben County FRF.” All donations to United Way of the Southern Tier for the Steuben County Flood Response Fund will be fully invested in flood relief with no monies withheld for administrative costs.

Dormann Holding Blood Drive & Concert Next Friday
Dormann Library will hold a blood drive Friday, September 3rd from 11:30am to 4:30pm in remembrance of the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Go to redcrossblood.org to donate and receive a free Red Cross Campfire Mug if you donate. Also at Dormann Library on September 3rd is a concert at 12:30pm by a Harp and Cello Duo from the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes! 

 

Hornell Woman Arrested for Prohibited Alcohol Sale
Following an undercover operation in the Town of Hornellsville, state police arrested 19-year-old Madison May of Hornell. She was charged with prohibited sale of an alcoholic beverage. She was issued an appearance ticket for court on the misdemeanor charge.

 

Hornell Man Arrested After Almond Dispute
After responding to a domestic dispute in the Town of Almond, state police arrested 31-year-old Ryan McGregor or Hornell. He was charged with criminal contempt for allegedly disobeying a court order. He was released on his own recognizance. 

 

Marshall Reports Flooding Destroyed a Dozen Steuben Structures 
Last week’s flooding in Steuben County destroyed about a dozen structures and more than two dozen sustained major damage according to Steuben County Director of Public Safety Tim Marshall. Officials estimated more than 500 homes and businesses have sustained some level of damage. In addition to significant damage in the town of Woodhull, nearby Jasper was also hit hard with the Jasper-Troupsburg high school suffering major flood damage. Allegany County highway crews have been assisting. 

 

Hochul Says She’ll Mandate NY Schools to COVID Testing or Vaccines
Hours after being sworn in as New York’s 57th governor, Kathy Hochul said she will require COVID vaccinations for all school staff, or weekly testing. Gov. Hochul’s vaccine mandate comes just two weeks before the start of school, and she promised more COVID policies are coming. The governor’s announcement comes as school leaders are finalizing reopening plans for the start of the school year.

 

Former Governor Cuomo Stripped of 2020 Emmy Award
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo has lost his Emmy award for his 2020 daily COVID-19 daily briefings after a firestorm of sexual harassment allegations and his subsequent resignation. The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences released a statement Tuesday saying that in light of the New York Attorney General’s report, and Andrew Cuomo’s subsequent resignation as Governor, it is rescinding his special 2020 International Emmy® Award. His name and any reference to his receiving the award will be eliminated from International Academy materials going forward.

 

Hochul Chooses Harlem Senator Brian Benjamin as Lietenant
New Governor Kathy Hochul selected Senior Assistant Majority Leader of the New York State Senate Brian Benjamin from Harlem to serve as her lieutenant governor according to The New York Times. Benjamin ran an unsuccessful campaign for New York City comptroller earlier this year.
