Wheeler Gives Updates on Flood Damage in CF Interview Exclusive
A state of Emergency remains in effect for eight Towns in Western Steuben county after severe flooding last week. County Manager Jack Wheeler reported updates on the Jasper-Troupsburg school. Jasper-Troupsburg will be using the old Greenwood school for classes for at least another semester until J-T is repaired from the flood damage. For the whole interview, check it out at:
State of Emergency Remains in Effect for 8 Steuben County Towns
Emergency Management officials say the State of Emergency for the Towns of West Union, Woodhull, Troupsburg, Tuscarora, Greenwood, Canisteo, Jasper and Addison remains in effect until further notice. Many roads in these areas remain closed due to heavy debris and significant damage. The American Red Cross has closed the shelters that were in place in Corning and Canisteo. Those in need of assistance with sheltering, they are asked to call 2-1-1.
Some Roads in Western Steuben County Remain Closed
State Route 417 in the Towns of Jasper, Woodhull, Tuscarora remains closed from State Route 36 in Jasper to County Route 100 in Tuscarora. Also closed is State Route 36 in the Town of Canisteo from County Route 119 to Canisteo Village Line. Many local town roads are also severely damaged and caution should be used if driving in these areas.
Soon-To-Be Governor Hochul Chooses Senior Appointments
Less than 24 hours away from being New York governor, now- Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul announced senior appointments to her incoming administration today. She will add Karen Persichilli Keogh as Secretary to the Governor and Elizabeth Fine as Counsel to the Governor. Keogh served on Hillary Clinton's Senatorial senior staff, managed U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's transition from the House of Representatives to the U.S. Senate and served as a senior political advisor to Mayor Michael Bloomberg's campaign in 2009. Fine is currently Executive Vice-President and General Counsel of the state’s economic development agency Empire State Development (ESD). Cuomo is officially set to resign at 11:59 p.m. tonight and Hochul will succeed as governor at midnight.
New York Economy Faces Unemployment Difficulty After Pandemic
Although many states are experiencing a drop in unemployment rates, New York is having a harder time bouncing back from the effect the pandemic has had on employment. According to the personal-finance website WalletHub, the U.S. unemployment rate currently sits at 5.4%, a vast improvement from the nearly historic high of 14.8% in April 2020. New York currently has a rate of 7.6%.
State COVID-Positivity Rate Currently 3.01%
New York’s COVID positivity rate is now 3.01%. The 7-day statewide average positivity rate is 3.14% Nearly 5,000 new cases have been confirmed. 21 more virus-related deaths have been reported. Health officials say there has also been 275 new hospitalizations.

Guthrie and Arnot Health healthcare systems have teamed up with SUNY Corning Community College to provide Certified Nurse Aides (CNA) and Patient Care Partner training for newly hired employees. Guthrie’s pre-requisites for this role require past experience in such work, completion of a Nursing Fundamentals Course from a college nursing curriculum or completion of a training program. By partnering with SUNY Corning Community College, Guthrie is able to hire those interested in a career in healthcare who otherwise do not have the experience, education or training, into a Patient Care Partner role. Tuition for this program is covered by the hospital systems and employees are paid their hourly salary while attending training.
