15 new COVID-19 cases in Steuben County, two deemed positive

The Steuben County Public Health Department received notification that 15 Steuben County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 and two have been deemed positive. This brings the total to 6,720 confirmed cases and 12 deemed positive, 155 of which are currently active. One individual is associated with an area hospital and another is associated with home health care, and one individual is associated with Corning, Inc. at Erwin.

 

NTSB releases new details in helicopter crash that killed Guthrie doctor

A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board said the helicopter piloted by Dr. Sanjay Kansara of Guthrie encountered a band of snow shortly before crashing in a remote area of northeastern Pennsylvania last month, although it is unknown if the snow caused or contributed to the crash. The helicopter was cruising at an altitude of about 3,000 feet en route Bradford County Airport in Towanda when it entered a “right, descending spiral” above Forkston Township in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. The report of the accident is preliminary and could change before the official final report, which could take a year or two.

 

Early morning house fire in Beaver Dams; Red Cross assisting family

The Red Cross is assisting one adult and two children after a house fire on Moreland Road in Beaver Dams early this morning. The cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.

 

Corning, Inc. opens new manufacturing plant in Wuhan

Corning Incorporated has opened a new Gen 10.5 liquid crystal display (LCD) glass substrate manufacturing plant in Wuhan in the Hubei Province, in China. The facility is co-located with a BOE Technology Group facility. The new facility will allow Corning to deliver Gen 10.5 glass substrates right to BOE for production of large display panels.

 

Cuomo: 50% of 18+ NYS residents fully vaccinated

Governor Andrew Cuomo made a number of announcements this morning from Sahlen Field in Buffalo, where the Toronto Blue Jays are slated to open their season, regarding the state’s progress on COVID-19. The state’s 1.10% positivity rate is the lowest since October 17th.  The 1,928 statewide hospitalizations is the lowest since November 14th. Governor Cuomo also said 50% of New Yorkers age 18 and up have been fully vaccinated. The Governor also announced beaches and pools in New York can open following social distancing guidelines for Memorial Day.

 

Astorino lauches bid for NYS Governor

Republican Rob Astorino, former radio industry professional and former Westchester County Executive said yesterday he will run for Governor of New York in 2022 in his second bid to usurp incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo. Among the main focuses of his campaign, addressing the job loss in New York State due to the COVID-19 pandemic, government corruption and the high taxes and cost of living in the State. Astorino was the Republican nominee to 2014, before losing to the sitting Governor Cuomo by a margin of 54% to 40%.
