Undercount of NY Nursing Home Deaths Reported at 65 Percent
Governor Cuomo fired back after an Associated Press report of the significant undercount of nursing home deaths was released. New York is the only state that has counted just residents who died on nursing home properties while those who were transported to hospitals and died there are not included in the death count. In May, a separate federal count began including the resident deaths in hospitals and was 65% higher than the comparable state count not including those deaths. Some state legislators, like Senator Tom O’Mara and some Democrats, accuse the Cuomo administration of attempting to appear the state is doing better than it actually has when it comes to nursing home deaths. Legislators from both parties are now calling for an independent investigation throughout the pandemic.

Cuomo Says NY Not Asking for Extra FEMA Funds
Governor Cuomo announced New York state will not ask for the extra funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Cuomo’s reasoning for not requesting the FEMA funds is because the state would have to kick in a quarter of the $400 per week unemployment benefit and could cost the state up to $4 billion dollars. Meanwhile, New York state faces a budget deficit of almost $14 billion. Cuomo adds he doesn’t believe the recent executive order from President Trump for the extra benefit is legal.
