County Presentation for 2019 Budget Set for November 15th
The tentative 2019 Steuben County Budget will be presented to the Legislature for input at 10am on November 15th. Currently, the county budget sits at $191 million with a $50 million tax levy. County Manager Jack Wheeler predicts the budget will remain in line with the current spending and will fall well under the state property tax cap.
County Ad Hoc Office Space Committee Sets Next Meeting
The Steuben County Ad Hoc Office Space Committee has set its next meeting to be held 10am Tuesday November 13th at the County Office Building’s Legislative Committee Room. The morning meeting agenda has slated “Parking Lot Lease” and “Court Space Study” for topics of discussion on the agenda. The meeting immediately follows the Finance Committee meeting.
Steuben County 2018 Midterm Elections Turnout 57 Percent
Steuben County Board of Elections officials report their voter turnout was 57 percent. This midterm election was down only 11 percent from the turnout for the 2016 presidential election in the county, which saw 68 percent turnout.
Steuben Businesses Celebrate Small Business Saturday With Specials
The holiday rush is soon heating up for stores and restaurants across Steuben County with Small Business Saturday to kick off the season this weekend. Chat-A-Whyle will be offering a reduced price on dinner meals on Saturday as part of the occasion. In Corning, Connors Mercantile will offer free giveaways with purchases as well as doughnuts, cider, coffee and chocolate sampling. According to the U.S. Small Business Association, New York State small businesses employ over 3,800,000 workers across and makes up over half the private workforce. County residents are highly encouraged to shop local to support business growth.
NY Midterms 2018: Dems Pick Up Seats, Voter Turnout Increased
Election day brought some major changes for the State Legislature as Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins will become the first African-American woman to hold the position of State Senate Majority Leader. All 63 Senate seats were up for election in the state this year and Democrats kept their Senate Majority in the state, while picking up 10 new seats. New York State voter turnout was reported to increase this year, with 49 percent of all active New York voters casting ballots-the highest it has been since 1994.

Steuben County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program encourages more seniors to get involved in the community.
