Fatal Boating Accident on Waneta Lake:
One person was killed and two others were injured in a boating accident Thursday evening on Waneta Lake. The Schuyler County Sheriff’s office said one person fell overboard around 8 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people in the boat were taken to Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan for treatment. No further information has been provided. The investigation is ongoing.
PA Man Facing Sex Charges in NY:
An investigation involving the state police of New York and Pennsylvania, as well as McKean County Child Protective Services has resulted in the arrest of a Pennsylvania man on multiple charges. 61-year-old David Emerson is accused of engaging in sexual contact with a child less than seventeen during a camping trip in New York. He is facing charges of sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment, forcible touching, and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned in the Town of Howard Court and sent to the Steuben County Jail.
8 Arrested in Early Morning Drug Sweep:
While most people were still sleeping in the wee hours of Thursday morning, law enforcement in Steuben County were out cracking down on drugs in the community. As part of “Operation Clean Sweep” eight arrests were made. Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker said they were drug dealers and were charged with criminal possession of controlled substances, and criminal sale of controlled substance. Baker added that more operations like the one Thursday will be happening throughout the county over the coming year, as well as welfare fraud investigations and sweeps. The people arrested Thursday are now in the Steuben County Jail without bail.
Addison Man Pleads Guilty to Stealing Cornell Backpacks:
The Addison man accused of stealing backpacks from students at Cornell University in March had pled guilty in Tompkins County Court. 39-year-old Richard Huyler pleaded guilty to three counts each of grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. A Savona woman, 31-year-old April Mace, was also arrested and she was sentenced to time in jail and at the Willard Drug Treatment Center in late July.
Prattsburgh Looking to Make Highway Super. Position Appointed:
The Town of Prattsburgh will hold a public hearing later this month on a proposed local law. That law would abolish the elected position of Highway Superintendent and make it an appointed position instead. If eventually adopted by the town board, it would be subject to a mandatory referendum. The public hearing is scheduled for Monday August 21st at 7:05 p.m. at the Town Hall.
CCC Open House Next Week:
Corning Community College will open the doors of its Health Education Center for tours next week as a part of an Open House Celebration. The event will be August 16th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the facility, which is located on Dension Parkway. There will be food and a variety of giveaways, including four tuition credits valued at $100 each.
