Langworthy: $9.3 Million For Nat'l Gas Work In Bath 
Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) has announced new federal funding for the Village of Bath for natural gas infrastructure and safety improvements, totaling $9,377,000.

“I’m proud to announce this significant $9.3 million investment to make critical improvements to Bath's natural gas infrastructure,” said Congressman Langworthy.“While Governor Hochul chooses to ignore federal reports that our state’s natural gas pipelines are on the brink of failure, the people of Western New York and the Southern Tier need reliable access to affordable energy now more than ever. This investment will fortify our infrastructure and guarantee families and businesses in Bath a stable and secure energy supply for generations to come.”  

From Bath Mayor Michael Sweet:  “I want to thank Congressman Langworthy for bringing this substantial $9 million dollar grant home for our Village’s natural gas utility here in Bath. “These funds are critical to advancing and re-investing in our infrastructure, so we can continue delivering safe, reliable, and affordable natural gas to homes and businesses across our community. Congressman Langworthy and I have both been vocal advocates for protecting our ratepayers while promoting American energy and natural gas in the Southern Tier.”

Langworthy says that these grants are part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure and Safety Modernization Grant Program. The first grant of $9,288,000 will go toward a pipeline construction project to replace 11.9 miles of natural gas infrastructure. The second grant of $89,000 will go toward the acquisition of methane leak detection equipment.

Congressman Langworthy also says, he led a letter to Governor Hochul regarding a recent report issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) outlining New York’s failing natural gas pipelines and power grid, as well as solutions for improvement.
 

Fatal Accident In Yates County

On April 17, 2024, at approximately 4:06 p.m., troopers from SP Dundee responded to a two-car fatal collision on State Route 14 in the town of Starkey.

A preliminary investigation revealed a 2017 Chevy Equinox was traveling southbound on State Route 14 when it struck a 2010 GMC Sierra that was traveling northbound head-on. The operator of the Chevy, a 34-year-old male, was pronounced deceased on the scene. Mercy Flight airlifted the operator of the GMC, a 22-year-old female, to Strong Hospital for her injuries.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Collison Reconstruction Unit (CRU), the Forensic Identification Unit (FIU), the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Department of Transportation, the Dundee Fire Department, and Mercy Flight.

This is an active investigation. 

Hammondsport School Budget Update 

The Hammondsport School Board has approved a budget proposal of $16,181.960.  Hammondsport School superintendent Kyle Bower also says he will know tax impact when he gets the approved state budget from Albany.

What Is Going On With The NYS Budget Anyways? 

On the topic of the state budget, GOP State Senator Tom O’Mara says he wishes he had more to report on the status of the budget.  "We're still in the dark here in Planet Albany.”  O’Mara also says, "it's no way to be dealing with a $237-billion budget."

A Former Steuben County Lawmaker Has Passed Away

Former longtime Steuben County Legislator Rich Argentieri, of Hornell, has died.  Rich Argentieri was also the long time CEO and CFO of the Hornell Erie Credit Union and a U.S. Army soldier in the early 1950’s.  Rich Argentieri was 93 years old.  He was a member of the Steuben County Legislature for several decades.

Bath Police say that their police dog, K9 Bud, has done so much good work in catching drug dealers,  Bath Police have promoted K9 Bud, to the rank of Sergeant.  

"In a brief ceremony Monday evening the Bath PD K9 Bud was promoted to Sergeant for all his good work catching drug dealers in the past 2 years. Bud has a handful of large felony drug arrests attributed to himself not to include some vehicle seizures for proceeds of a crime. Bud has helped track runaway and suicidal juveniles and suspects after vehicle pursuits, etc. The deterrent effect on making drug dealers think twice is immeasurable. If he keeps up the hard work he could make Investigator in a few more years!! A long standing tradition of the K9 outranking his handler ensures respect and fair treatment. Officer Roberson our K9 Officer can attest to the world revolving around Bud. We have a picture of him eating a big piece of that peanut butter frosting cake that we will post later. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand: New York State Is Facing A Healthcare Worker Shortage, Comes Up Solution

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has announced the Long-Term Care Workforce Support Act, legislation that would address a nationwide shortage of long-term care workers.   Gillibrand says, specifically, the Long-Term Care Workforce Support Act would: Help Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS) agencies retain staff and reduce vacancies and turnover by providing them with additional federal reimbursement for serving Medicaid recipients. These additional funds would allow HCBS agencies to provide higher compensation and better benefits to workers. Specifically, the bill would increase the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) by 10 percentage points for state Medicaid long-term care services.

Provide $100 billion in federal grants over 5 years to states to expand the long-term care workforce. These grants will help provide eligible individuals - including those in rural and underserved communities that are facing severe home health care worker shortages - with opportunities for education, training, and career advancement.  Improve labor protections and benefits for long-term care workers. The legislation would expand protections against wage theft, implement fair scheduling practices, ensure the right to meals and rest, and require all employers to provide paid sick time. It would also give the Secretary of Labor the authority to investigate and take action against any violations. 

Steuben County Lawmakers  To Meet On Monday

The Steuben County Legislature meets on Monday, April 22.  On the agenda, increasing the county landfill’s tipping fees, starting in July.  Also the county legislators will be doing a declaration of need, for the new county ambulance program. 

Avon Man Rescued From The River In Avoca 

FROM NYSP: 

On April 16, 2024, at approximately 8:55 a.m., troopers from SP Wayland received a call about a paddle and overturned kayak floating down the Cohocton River near the Dollar General, located on State Route 415 in the town of Avoca.

The caller reported observing an oar, a kayak, and a coffee mug float past him while fishing. Troopers on the scene took immediate action, calling for additional resources. The New York State Police Unmanned Aerial System Unit (UAS) responded. Steuben County 911 received a call from the kayaker, Trevor L. Conklin, age 31, of Avon, NY, who advised that he was on a peninsula in the river after his kayak overturned. UAS was able to locate the Conklin. The Bath Swift Water Rescue then retrieved Conklin from the water. Conklin was treated and released at the scene by Bath Ambulance.

The New York State Police, in a collaborative effort with Bath Ambulance and Swift Water Rescue, the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, and the Steuben County Emergency Services, successfully responded to the incident, ensuring a comprehensive and effective rescue operation. 

New Deputy For The Steuben County Sheriff's Office

Therer was a swearing in ceremony last week, when Sheriff Allard welcomed the newest member of the Patrol Division, Deputy Rachael Hedges. Deputy Hedges will be attending Alfred State Police Academy in May. "We look forward to her graduation and field training," Sheriff Allard said.  

Tenney: Fundraising Update For Early 2024

GOP Congresswoman Claudia Tenney says her fundraising brought in $695,955  for the first Quarter across all counties, including over 14,500 donors who gave an average of $28.00.  Tenney's district will be including several towns and villages in Steuben County, after the November elections.  
 

Bath Police Officer Honored, At Bath Village Hall

Bath Mayor Michael Sweet says Bath Village Police Sgt. Dustin Johnson was given a commendation for an arrest made last month, of an Elmira male suspect who had a loaded handgun inside his vehicle.  "Great job Sergeant , at keeping our streets safe," said Mayor Sweet.

Update On The Sheriff's Lawsuit Situation

From Sheriff Jim Allard:  "In September of 2023, members of the Steuben County government passed two resolutions to strip the Sheriff’s liability protections under the Public Officer Law and to cause him to purchase, at his own expense, millions of dollars of liability insurance.  Upon submitting a petition to enjoin the resolutions to the New York State Supreme Court, the Sheriff was granted a stay of the resolutions until it could be heard in Supreme Court.  Prior to the initial court hearing, the county repealed the resolution requiring liability insurance.  In January, after the initial hearing, the New York State Supreme Court ordered that a legislator, who was present in the closed executive sessions leading to the resolution vote, needed to be deposed to provide firsthand information for the Court’s use in deciding whether or not the county “acted in bad faith”.  The county then filed a motion in Appellate Court to appeal this decision and prevent the testimony of the legislator.  On April 11, 2024, the New York State Appellate Court denied the Steuben County’s attorneys’ motion to appeal, allowing for the court ordered deposition of a County Legislator to proceed, with a final hearing in NYS Supreme Court subsequent to the legislator’s deposition.

The 209 Committee: What It Is  

The Steuben County Legislature created what they’re calling the 209 Committee in July of 2023.   It was formed to allow the county to look into any issues going on in county departments.  There is going to be a meeting of the 209 Committee this Thursday morning. 

Gov Hochul: The State Budget Has Been Agreed Upon 

Governor Kathy Hochul says there has been a budget agreement.  The big thing school superintendents look for in state budgets: how much will be going to education?  The answer this year: $35.9 billion dollars.   The governor says $29 billion of that money, will be going to school foundational aid.

Congressman Nick Langworthy has introduced legislation, which if passed, would set up a commission — a group of experts with backgrounds in AI, child protection, and law enforcement — who can develop solutions to this growing problem as AI technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace. The commission is expected to assess the current state of the problem and recommend solutions to improve the current legal framework.

Troopers Deliver A Baby In An Emergency SItuation 

State Police report that troopers in Seneca County helped deliver a baby in Waterloo.  That happened because a pregnant woman had a baby in a parking lot at a store there and State Police helped her out.

Interesting Facts About Steuben County 9-1-1 Dispatchers

Well it goes without saying that it’s April 15^th tax day.  Also, this week is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, when dispatchers are honored.  Did you know that there are in Steuben County, 44 Fire Departments?  Over a dozen law enforcement agencies?  And that the county 9-1-1 center gets between 90,000 and 100,000 calls a year from county residents?  That’s not counting residents from outside of Steuben County, who call while driving in Steuben County on 390, I-86 and many other roads.  Here’s just three of the major incidents from the last few years, handled by dispatchers at the 9-1-1 Center in Steuben County: The August 22^nd 2023 Roosevelt Avenue shooting incident in Bath, the February 22^nd downtown fire in Wayland, which spread from building to building, and the November 18^th 2019 massive fire in Hornell.      

Hammondsport Now Working To Win Restore NY $$$

They are having a special meeting in Hammondsport, the special meeting is about working to win the Restore New York money.  That’ll be on Tuesday April 30 at 6pm at Hammondsport Village Hall.  (It should be noted that Restore New York is a separate contest from the Downtown Revitalization Initative.)

Bridge Work Started Today Across Steuben County

Three bridge were closed down for work today, one in Riverside, on in Tuscarora and one in Cameron.  The bridge closing in Riverside is on Route 352, the Bridge closing in Tuscarora is on Stead School Road, the one in Cameron is on Cameron-North Jasper Road. 

Corning Inc: How We Helped At The Food Bank

Corning Incorporated says 100 of their employees recently worked in teams of ten, packing food at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.  The Corning Inc workers packed 7,000 bags and the event they attended raised more than $50,000 to fight child food insecurity in our community.

GOP Assemblyman Phil Palmesano is promoting the organ donor cause.  Something he did, about 20 years ago, when he donated a kidney to his sister.   Below is an excerpt from a recent Palmesano column on this: 

"According to Donate Life New York, our state ranks 50th out of 52 states and territories in total organ donor enrollment. We have a 47% enrollment rate while the national average is 64%. As a state, we have the third-greatest need for organs but the third-worst enrollment rate.

"Nearly 8,000 New Yorkers are on the waiting list for a transplant, and 1,100 of those people have been waiting for more than five years. Tragically, in 2022, nearly 400 New Yorkers died while waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. We can, and must, do better!" 

Sen Schumer: I Will Not Stop Fighting Until Ryan Is Home

US Senator Chuck Schumer is working to get a Dansville man out of Afghanistan.  "The US Senate just passed Leader McConnell and my resolution calling for Ryan Corbett's immediate and unconditional release," Senator Schumer said.  "This weeekend is Ryan's birthday.  It has been 609 days since Ryan has been held by the Taliban," Schumer stated.

Bath Mayor Michael Sweet tells the WVIN News Department that’s the Ebikes on sidewalks are getting to be a problem.  Mayor Sweet says this is has been an issue on the following streets: Liberty, Washington and Geneva.

Road Work Starts Tonight And It's An Overnight Job

The Steuben County Sheriffs Department and the State DOT say work starts tonight at 10:00 on I-86 West between Exit 45 (Downtown Corning) and Exit 43 (Painted Post.  Also Interstate 99 North to I86 West, in the town of Erwin, will be closing tonight at 10:00.  And the ramp connecting I86 west to Interstate 99 South will also be closed.  The roads will be open again Saturday morning.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department is having a free Car Seat Check Event tomorrow 10:00am to 2:00pm in the Armstrong Telephone Company, Rear Parking Lot on Front Street in Addison.

Update On The Injured Chemung Co Sheriff's Investigator

The sheriff of Chemung county says that Investigator Mike Theetge is no longer in the ICU and has been moved from Robert Packer hospital to a medical facility in Rochester for physical rehab. Thetgee was injured in a hit and run two weeks ago in Big Flats.

Today marks 14 days since the incident that critically injured Investigator Mike Theetge. Over that period of time, Mike has been in a Trauma 1 ICU, a step-down ICU, a regular hospital room, and finally today on the road to a Rehab Center in Rochester, NY. He has made significant improvements in this short period of time, but still has a very long road to recovery ahead of him.

None of this improvement would have been possible without Mike’s own intestinal fortitude to fight hard for himself each day and having the loving support of his family and closest friends by his side every step of the way. Equally as important, has been the tremendous care Mike has received since this tragic incident occurred. This care has ranged from the Erway Ambulance attendants, the doctors and nurses of Guthrie Hospital in Corning, the medical flight team of Guthrie One, as well as the doctors and nurses at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA who treated him. Their compassion, care, and expertise toward Mike’s care has been second to none and they deserve every bit of recognition we can give them! A special thank you to the RPH security team for all their support each day that Mike had been there, but especially today in their assistance with helping coordinate his transfer and the impact that had on the hospital. A job well done!

The outpouring of support from Mike’s colleagues and the public for him and his family has been and continues to be absolutely incredible and overwhelming. The Undersheriff and I would like to acknowledge the men and women of our agency for everything they’ve done during this time to remain vigilant and supportive to their colleague and friend and his family, as well as to continue to serve our community at the same time.

A special thank you to our Criminal Investigation Division team led by Lt. Pete Ruhmel, Sgt. Jeremiah Ayers, and Investigator James Ritter who have worked hand-in-hand with Sr. Investigator Karl Appelbacher and Sr. Investigator Matt Lambert of the NYSP, and their whole team, to bring those responsible for Mike’s injuries to justice, as well as the Ithaca Police Department and all the other law enforcement agencies who assisted with that mission.

Meth Is Apparently On The Increase In The County

This morning in Hornell, the Hornell Police Chief Ted Murray said there has been an increase in mental health incidents, "90 percent of which are caused by meth amphetamines," Murray stated today.   The Hornell Police Chief also noted that there are times when it takes up to six doses of Narcan to reverse the effects of an overdose from Meth, and that often the overdose victim becomes outraged at the person who saved them.  Bath Village Police Chief Colin Taft tells WVIN he is seeing a similar situation over here in Bath.  "I would agree with Chief Murray that there are a lot of problems with mental health," Taft said this morning.  "The people that come to, when we provide Narcan to them, and after many doses, they become very angry that their high was ruined, that is a constant problem.  People that are abusing drugs, more than ever, we have a lot of calls - especially with meth amphetamine use and mental illness," 

A Very, Very, Very High Speed Chase In Allegany County

Over in Allegany County, Alfred Police report that a 20 year old male from West Henrietta is facing numerous charges after allegedly driving over 100 miles an hour on Route 244 and speeding past cars in no passing zones.  

Langworthy, Gillibrand, The Hostages And October 7

On the topic of the hostages, Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy says quote “More than 250 hostages were taken, including American citizens. There are still 5 Americans who are believed to be alive, fighting to hang on with only the hope that their government is doing everything it can to bring them home.”   Also, Democrat US Sennator Gillibrand  met with a New York City family whose son was killed on October 7.  "Yesterday I met with Ruby Chen," Gillibrand told WVIN.  "Ruby's son was killed on October 7.  At first the family didn't know what happened to their son and they thought he was a hostage, so they have been involved in all of the hostage negotiations, and they want their son Itay's body returned.  I talked with Ruby yesterday and he is hopeful that these recent negotiations could work out," Gillibrand said.  

Troopers: There Is A Lot Of Distracted Driving 

State Police for our region, (Bath and the surrounding area are considered to be part of Troop E Canandaigua), and Troopers in Troop E are reporting they recently made a lot of arrests for distracted driving.  Troopers say that 104 tickets were issued to texting drivers, and there were almost 40 other tickets issued for other distracted driving issues. 

Upcoming Highway Work In Steuben County

The New York State Department of Transportation and the Steuben County Sheriff's Office have advised that westbound traffic along Interstate 86 between Exit 45 (Downtown Corning) and Exit 43 (Painted Post), and Interstate 99 northbound to Interstate 86 westbound (Exit 12), in the town of Erwin, will be closing beginning 10 p.m. on Friday, April 12th to accommodate sign replacement work. The ramp connecting Interstate 86 westbound traffic to Interstate 99 southbound will also be closed. The roadway is anticipated to reopen by the morning of Saturday, April 13.  There will be a posted detour for motorists to follow.

Local Primaries On June 25, Here In Steuben County

The Steuben County Elections Office tells WVIN News that there is a primary on June 25, that day there’ll be a Bath Town Clerk GOP Primary between Tara Muller and Tara Thorpe. There’s a Wheeler Town highway Superintendent primary between Richard Decker and Douglas Towner.  There is also a Wheeler Town Board primary between Jonathan Coe and Heather Trenchard.  

Burn Barrels Are Banned By The NYS DEC

The Department Of Environmental Conservation says "no" to outdoor burn barrels.  Steuben County Public Safety Director Tim Marshall says there’s a new rule on burn barrels statewide. Marshall explained, on WVIN's Community Focus on Tuesday, that it is part of the current Burn Ban going on now, "Burn barrels are illegal now according to this new regulation that D.E.C. put in, when this burn ban went in place," Marshall said yesterday, on Community Focus.

The Bath Police Department is in the process of changing their uniform patch, and they’re accepting patch design suggestions for the next 30 days.  They say if you have an idea about a new patch design for Bath Police, please drop off a color copy of it along with your contact info, at the Bath P.D.  

Steuben County And The Reaction To The Eclipse 

Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler says there were no major traffic issues yesterday here in Steuben County. Wheeler also says from talking with state officials he's hearing that those who travelled to see the eclipse from outside of the area went to the Adirondacks and Vermont.  Also, with the cloudy skies, was there much to see anyways?  Apparently not in Bath, Hornell and other places in Steuben County.  From what we've heard from people who went out to watch the eclipse on Monday, there were only brief moments when you could see the eclipse. 

Recent Courses Taken By Sheriff's Dept Officials

Sheriff Jim Allard says Sergeant Day and Investigator Brown recently attended an FBI SWAT Leadership training with members of the Elmira Police SWAT Team in Virginia.  The sheriff also says Officers  Palmer, McDaniels, Teeter, and Montgomery-Willis recently graduated from the Basic Course for Corrections Officers.

Congressional Primaries Are Coming Up On June 25

The Steuben County Elections Office says, there is a primary on June 25, and on that day, there might be a primary for the US Senate seat against Senator Gillibrand from New York City based Democrat Khaled (ku-leed) Salem.  Also on June 25, there might be a primary for the 24^th Congressional District between Republican Claudia Tenney and Ontario County Republican Mario Fratto.   Wayland, Dansvile, Cohocton, Avoca, Pulteney and Prattsbrugh will be in that 24^th Congressional District after November.  

It's Solar Eclipse Day - Troopers Say Drive Safely

State Police are reminding everyone who is driving today, to be as patient, as the roads are expected to be filled with cars, of those coming in to see the eclipse.  

Longtime Local Firefighter Has Died 

Officials from the Bath Volunteer Fire Department say that  Hammondsport Firefighter Bill Fries Sr, has passed away. 

"The Bath Volunteer Fire Department sends our deepest condolences and prayers to the Hammondsport Fire Department , Chief Bill Fries and his family for the passing of Bill Fries Sr. who dedicated his life to their department. Bill was always full of life and made everyone laugh. He was a brother firefighter but also a dear friend and he will be truly missed. Rest in peace brother, until we meet again."

Graduation For Corning's Police Academy Is This Weekend

There is a graduation ceremony coming up this Friday at Corning Community College.  That’s for the Law Enforcement Academy there.   Academy Session Director Zach Stewart tells WVIN that there are 13 graduates this year.  This is the 45th class for the Corning Community College Police Academy.  

Schumer: I Have Two Concerns About This Merger

Capital One is buying Discover Card.  The New York Daily News reports that Democrat US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says two things about that.  Schumer says many cardholders might not know about the merger and they should, and the senator says less competition  could mean higher interest rates, bigger penalties and other issues.

The annual fundraiser for area youth groups began in 1992 when radio personality Dave Taylor-Smith suggested listeners go to Tyrtle Beach on Lake Salubria instead of townspeople's annual trek to Myrtle Beach, NC.

Since then, the event has featured a jumper, enlisted from local civic and government agencies, taking the plunge into the freezing waters of the lake to raise money for youth activities.

In 32 years, the event has raised nearly $800,000.

Friday's Wild Chase On Rt 21 And 390 In Steuben County

A chase started on Route 21 on Friday afternoon, when a truck with Pennsylvania plates, was spotted going at a high rate of speed on Route 21.  The Steuben County Sheriff’s Investitgator Brandon Martin iniated the chase on Route 21.  Scanner audio indicated that the driver was both throwing things out the window and going up to 90 miles per hour when the truck was  on I-390.   It ended somewhere North of Cohocton when State Police caught the suspect.  

Chemung County Investigator Theetge, Is Still In Critical 

Here is an update on the medical condition of Chemung County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Mike Thetgee.  Sheriff Shromm says Thettgee has shown some signs of improvement but is still in critical condition.  Donations are being made to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Department.

We want to pass on the latest update on Investigator Mike Theetge. He remains in Intensive Care in Critical but stable condition. Over the past several days he has shown signs of improvement and we will remain cautiously optimistic that his recovery will continue to go in that direction.

The Theetge family and members of the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office cannot thank the public enough for their continued thoughts and prayers for Mike’s full recovery, as well as the outpouring of donations to assist the family on his long road to recovery. Having said this, we would ask that any individual, business, or corporation wishing to donate to the family do so by contacting the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office directly to arrange the drop off of their donation(s) or to have a member of the Sheriff’s Office come to pick the donation(s) up.

While we greatly appreciate individuals in the community facilitating many of these fundraising events, it has become increasingly difficult to adequately monitor and control the manner in which they are being collected and turned over to the family. By dropping the donations directly off to the Sheriff’s Office or having a member of our agency pick them up, this will streamline that process for the family.

Local Eclipse Plans For Monday, April 8

There will be a number of eclipse events at Keuka Lake on Monday.  Corning Community College Is having an Eclipse Open House, Monday :30-4:00pm at the college’s Digital Dome. It’s free and they say to take note that they only have 1500 glasses. You are welcome to bring your own glasses.  On the topic of those special glasses, St James Hospital CEO Wendy Disbrow gave a reminder this morning, to be sure to wear the proper eyewear.  "They're called 12312-2 Cerftified," and Disbrow said, you can get more info about them on the NYS Department of Health website.   
 

As far as local schools go, Bath and Prattsburgh schools are off all day Monday.  Hammondsport is dismissing students at 1130am Monday.   Avoca is dismissing students at 1145am Monday.   Campbell Savona is dismissing secondary school students at 1130am and Campbell Savona is dismissing elementary students at 1155am.

Sheriff Jim Allard says, if you have received a mailer from the NYS Association of Sheriff’s, that’s a legitimate mailer!  The Sheriff is asking people to join in and support the sheriff’s institute as they have a summer camp for disadvantaged children and offer scholarships to them as well.

Johnson Helping Wayland Out, With FIre Recovery Plans

In February 2022, there was a devastating fire in downtown Wayland.  Several buildings suffered enormous damage.  The latest in that situation is, Steuben County Industrial Development Agency Director Jamie Johnson has been working with Wayland village officials to get state money out of the New York State, Restore New York Program.  "Restore NY is a grant that the state resurrected a few years ago," Johnson said.  "It's a great program.  It provides communities with an opportunity to go out and apply for up to $2,000,000 in funding for specific projects in their community."  Johnson hopes that this year's proposal from Wayland Village Hall to the Restore NY Program officials, will be successful.  

County Landfill Is Bringing In Some $$$ From Nat'l Gas

The Steuben County Landfill in Bath is making some nice extra money from a French owned energy company called WAGA.  WAGA delivers renewable natural gas from the landfill to the Corning Natural Gas System.  "Per the agreement, WAGA will make a fixed annual payment of $75,000 for the well field improvements," Steuben County Public Works Commissioner Eric Rose stated.  'This will offset the annual maintenance expense," Rose explained.  "So the goal is to maximize the output of the county landfill's natural gas.   We have all be sending landfill natural gas to WAGA for the past two weeks.  We're fully at 100% injections so we should see some turnaround on this," Rose said.  

Bath Man Charged After A Break-In 

The Bath Village Police Department reports the arrest of 41 year old Jason Arnold of Liberty Street in Bath.  He’s charged with 2^nd degree burglary, 1^st degree criminal contempt and aggravated family offense.   He’s alleged to have violated a protection order. 

Bath Board Of Ed Announces Upcoming Meeting Dates 

The Bath School Board says, the April 9 Bath Board of Education Budget workshop has been cancelled.  The Bath Board of Education will be having their regular meeting on April 17^th at 6pm in the high school library.

Assemblyman Chris Friend: On The Big Flats Hit And Run

Big Flats Republican Assemblyman Chris Friend says he’s trying to get criminal justice reforms passed in Albany.  Assemblyman Friend says that’s because of the incident last Friday when a Chemung County Investigator was struck by the suspects car, leaving the investigator with severe injuries, and is in critical condition.

The Flood Watch Has Begun 

The National Weather Service reports Steuben County and Chemung County are in a flood watch until late Thursday night,  Allegany and Livingston counties are in the flood watch until Thursday at 2pm.

Power Outages In Steuben County This Morning

There were power outages this morning in Steuben County, Canisteo and Hornellsville were affected, we’re told by NYSEG there were 1200 customers without power at one point this morning.

Visiting County Historian to Speak Here In Bath, Friday

At 4 PM on Friday, April 5, Schuyler County Historian Gary Emerson will give an illustrated program on the history of canals in our area.  The free presentation will take place at Bath Fire Hall, on 50 East Morris Street.

Before 1825, the Southern Tier boomed economically on river traffic down into Pennsylvania and Maryland.  But the Erie Canal's completion in 1825 changed all the traffic patterns, making the Twin Tiers an economic disaster zone.

Railroads eventually restored the economy.  But until then, small canals beginning in Penn Yan, Corning, and Dansville brought new connctions to Steuben County and its neighbors.

Allard: Big Thanks To The Deputies For Their Life Saving Work In Avoca, Four Weeks Ago 

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard has given commendations to two deputies for their life saving work in Avoca on March 4, in preventing a tractor trailer from going off a bridge there.  Allard says deputies Brian Harrison and Ryan Andrews got the equipment there to pull the semi back up from hanging over the bridge, got the driver out of the cab, and protected the cars driving below the bridge. 

Fundraisers Underway For Investigator Mike Theetge

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Department officials say there is a fundraiser at First Arena in Elmira tomorrow for county investigator Mike Theetge.  Also cash donations are being accepted at Jams Fitness Center in Elmira.  In addition there is a fundraiser through Finger Lakes Sign and Design in Horseheads.

Getting Closer To The Steuben Co Ambulance/EMS Service

Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler and Steuben County Public Safety Director Tim Marshall are both saying that the county is getting close to having a countywide ambulance and EMS service going.  Marshall says that recruitment is going on and there are ongoing negotiations with a medical billing company.  One thing that has to be taken care of first is getting a municipal approval form sent out.  The timetable for the launch of this new county service is tentatively between later this month and early May.  

Baker: We Are Getting Strongarmed By This Company

Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker says the company that sells the police body cameras to local law enforcement now wants to charge the Steuben County DA’s office between $30 and $60,000 a year to be able to access bodycam videos from law enforcement agencies like the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.   Baker also says, the company is threatening to pull the plug, so the DA’s office in Bath, won’t be able to see the videos unless they pay up.    

Addison School Superintendent Joe Dioguardi Has Died

The following statement is posted on the Addison Central School website:  With sadness, the District shares with the community that Mr. DioGuardi passed away this morning, Friday, March 29th. Please join the ACS faculty & staff extending our deepest sympathies and most sincere condolences to Mr. DioGuardi's family. The District is working with the GST BOCES and its Regional Crisis Team to have support available for students, faculty and staff who may need it when they return to campus next week.

Also, the funeral arrangement for Joe Dioguardi will be with the John W. Martin Funeral Home in Mount Morris.  Calling hours will be Saturday April 13, 11am-2pm at the funeral home in Mount Morris.

On March 30, 2024, the driver of the vehicle, Fatiuna Massaline, age 24, of Ithaca, NY, was located in the city of Ithaca and arrested and charged with Assault on a Police Officer (C Felony) and Reckless Endangerment 1st (D Felony).  She was processed at SP Horseheads and arraigned in the Town of Big Flats Court, where she was remanded to the Chemung County Jail on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond pending future court proceedings.

The New York State Police were assisted by members of the Chemung County Sheriff's Office and the Ithaca Police Department.

Chemung County Investigator Severely Injured In Big Flats
FROM NYSP:   On Friday, March 29, 2024, at approximately 6:49 p.m., the New York State Police, with assistance from Chemung County Sheriff's Office, were participating in a retail theft detail working with loss prevention at the Target store located on County Road 64 in the town of Big Flats.

Target loss prevention personnel observed a black male place a TV and other various items in a shopping cart and exit pass all points of sale. The suspect was challenged by loss prevention in the store's vestibule and left the items behind as he exited. A 2016 black Chevy Impala pulled up to the front of the store. Law enforcement attempted to block the vehicle to prevent it and other occupants from leaving the scene. This was ineffective, as the suspect vehicle was able to evade law enforcement and began moving towards the suspect to pick him up in the rear of the parking lot. An Investigator from the New York State Police and Investigator Theetge from the Chemung County Sheriff's Office chased the suspect on foot as he began to run toward the black Impala. The suspect slid across the hood of the Impala. Investigator Theetge reached to grab him and also slid onto the hood. The Impala accelerated and turned sharply, causing the suspect and Investigator Theetge to be ejected from the hood. The suspect got up and ran. Investigator Theetge sustained a severe head injury at this time. The suspect was then taken into custody. The State Police investigator suffered a minor leg injury during the incident. He was treated at Guthrie Corning Hospital and released. The Chevy Impala then fled the parking lot at a high rate of speed.

The Chemung County Investigator suffered a severe head injury and was initially transported by ambulance to Guthrie Corning Hospital and then flown to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. He is in critical condition at this time.

The suspect that was apprehended is identified as Dominick J. Haley, age 24, of Ithaca, NY. Haley was arrested and transported to SP Horseheads for processing. Haley was charged with Assault on a Police Officer (C Violent Felony), Assault 2nd (D Felony), Petit Larceny, and Resisting Arrest, both class A Misdemeanors. Haley was taken to the Town of Big Flats Court and arraigned in front of Town Justice Paul Hart, where he was remanded in lieu of $100,000 cash and $200,000 bond to Chemung County Jail.

The black Chevy Impala was abandoned in the immediate area of the Target Store. The driver has been identified as Fatiuna A. Massaline, age 24. She was last known to reside in the Ithaca, NY, area. We are seeking the public's assistance in locating Ms. Massaline.

Troopers: Wild Incident In Riverside Early Friday Morning

FROM NYSP: On March 29, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., the New York State Police, with the assistance of the Painted Post Police Department, Corning Police Department, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, and Painted Post Fire Department, responded to the report of a female suspect with a knife setting fire to the Fasttrac Gas Station located at 364 West Pulteney Street in the village of Riverside.

Prior to law enforcement's arrival, the suspect had made threats to harm passersby, and upon arrival of police, the suspect threatened to kill law enforcement officers.  A plan was put in place and jointly executed by all agencies, and the suspect was apprehended without any injuries, and the fire was extinguished.

The suspect was identified as Abbi E. Fuller, age 37, of Painted Post, NY, and was subsequently charged with the following criminal charges: Arson in the 3rd (C Felony), Menacing a Police Officer(D Felony), Criminal Mischief in the 3rd (E Felony), Arson in the 5th (A Misdemeanor), Menacing in the 2nd (A Misdemeanor) and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th (A Misdemeanor).  Fuller was transported to Steuben County CAP court, where she was arraigned and released on her own recognizance.

Popular Annual Local Event To Take Place Once Again 

If it is not the biggest event in this part of Steuben County, it comes very, very close.  Smoke On The Water.  There have been some questions posed to the Hammondpsort Fire Department on social media regarding Smoke on The Water, and the Hammondsport Fire Dept. says that Smoke On The Water this year will be August 24^th. 
 

Contract  Deal Worked Out For Prison Guards State Union

Governor Kathy Hochul says a two year agreement’s been ratified between the state government, and the state law enforcement union NYSCOPBA.  That union is for, among others, prison guards.  The agreement calls for raises, bonuses and 12 weeks of paid parental leave.  The governor also says, veterans and gold star parents and spouses and children can get a lifetime pass into state parks.   

Flags To Be At Half-Staff - Sunup To Sundown - Saturday

Governor Kathy Hochul wants flags at half staff from tomorrow morning until tomorrow night in honor of slain New York City Police Officer Jonathan Diller.  The officer was shot in the line of duty on Monday during a traffic stop in Queens.

O'Mara: So What Is The $8 Billion Dollars For Anyways?

Republican State Senator Tom O’Mara says the deal worked out to delay the vote on the budget from April 1 to April 4, includes a provision to set aside $8 billion dollars for something – but he says - he does not know what that something is.  "There is eight billion dollars in padding, in debt, and we don't have any idea what it's for," O"Mara said last night on the State Senate floor.  

State Comptroller Says The State Needs To Get Involved

An issue that’s been at the forefront here in Steuben County is the lack of volunteer firefighters and EMTs these days.  State Comptroller Tom Dinapoli (D) issued a report today that says New York State government needs to get more involved in helping provide more emergency medical services across the state.  The State Comptroller says the two top issues at the local level are lack of staff and lack of funds.  Dinapoli also says the state needs to get involved at the county level to help New York State residents get more access to emergency medical care.

In a somewhat related story, Steuben County Legislative Chair Kelly Fitzpatrick says the county has approved a reimbursement program for those who get their EMT certifications.

Mechatronics.  That’s advanced automated manufacturing.  And Corning Community College recently unveiled their Mechatronics Lab.  College officials say the lab is a place where students can learn laser engraving, 3D printing and other manufacturing skills.

Two Steuben County employees were recognized by the county Legislature for their service to county residents:  Both Vicki Presler and Janice Schuck were recognized for more than 25 years of service.

Local Schools Which Are Slated to Lose Funding _ Might Get It Back, Thanks To State Lawmakers Who Opposed Cuts
Jamestown Republican Senator George Borrello tells us that both the State Senate and the Assembly have, in their proposed budgets, put back more state aid for schools.  It was announced three months ago that there were numerous major cuts to some local schools, most notably, Hammondsport Central.  State Senator George Borrello says he and Senator O’Mara have been meeting with school superintendents on this issue and they hope that the state aid will be in Governor Kathy Hochul’s finalized budget, when it’s signed.    "We've met with school officials, across the region, and the two biggest topics are electric school buses and the cuts in state aid to schools," Borrello said this morning.  "So with that being said, there is good news - the good news is, even though the governor drafted cuts in her budget, both the Senate One House budget and the Assembly one house budget proposals did restore that funding," Borrello stated. 

Early Voting Continues Here In Steuben County 

Early voting continutes through Saturday for the Democrat and Republican primaries.  Early voting here for this area is at the Steuben County Annex building at 20 East Morris Street.  The official primary day for both parties, is Tuesday April 2. 

Palmesano Questions "Squatters Rights" Legsislation

Corning Republican Assemblyman Phil Palmesano is part of a press conference today.  That will be about how the downstate legislators are trying to pass laws to protect squatters.  

Allard: Corrections Officers Classes Just Finished Up 

Sheriff Jim Allard says that the classes for Corrections Officers ended recently.  Allard says those who took the classes studied crime scene prevention, courtroom testimony, hostage survival, physical training and other criminal justice related subjects. 

 Man Allegedly Fires Gunshots At State Police In Allegany County - Suspect Facing Serious Charges

State Police report that a 40 year old male in Allegany County is facing three charges of attempted murder of a police officer, as well as assault, robbery and burglary charges, after allegedly firing gunshots at State Police Officers in the Town of Wirt on Sunday.  The suspect’s name is Jonathan Russell.  No address given.  No troopers were injured.  Russell is in Allegany County Jail without bail.

Public Health No Fatal Overdoses In Steuben Co In Feb

The Steuben County Public Health Department and partners are sharing updated overdose data for February 2024: 19 overdoses were reported, 0 fatalities were reported, and 5 instances of Narcan administration were cited.  “We are pleased to have seen zero reported fatalities in the beginning of 2024.” said Public Health Director, Darlene Smith. “We continue to encourage anyone that is utilizing substances or supporting loved ones to access the resources at their disposal. Confidential substance use and addiction support is available 24/7 by calling 1-877-8-HOPENY (467369) or text HOPENY (467369).”

Prattsburgh Central To Take The Day Off - On April 8

As you all know, we have decided to NOT have school on Monday, April 8. That is the day of the total solar eclipse. This is a once in a lifetime event that certainly will be memorable for all of us. Teachers have and will be educating students on what is happening during this total eclipse, and the district has purchased approved viewing glasses to distribute to all students in grades PK-12. Prattsburgh is in the "path of totality", so we are a great location to view this awesome event.

Please be looking for a permission slip/release form that is being sent home with all students this week. This form needs to be filled out and returned in order for us to be able to provide your child with a pair of glasses. These forms are due back to your child's teacher by Wednesday, April 3 and we will distribute glasses to all students on Friday, April 5.

Bath Village Mayor Michael Sweet Says That Work Has Begun On Haverling Street In Bath
"They're doing both water and natural gas," Mayor Michael Sweet said this morning.  "So that has started, and our goal is by June 1 it will be turned over the street department for milling and then it'll be paved and I know the people on that street, have sacrificed a lot over a year, because that's been a very long project.  However, they're going to have a brand new street here, by the end of summer," Sweet explained.   In other infrastructure related news, Hammondsport Police say that work started last week on Route 54A and Route 76 in the Urbana area.

CENTRAL STEUBEN AWARDS HELD OVER THE WEEEKEND
The Central Steuben Chamber of Commerce had their awards dinner Saturday night.  Steuben County Deputy Brent Nadjadi, along with Derrick Nadjadi and Nathan Northrup, were each honored with Veteran of the year awards.  

New Staff Member At The County IDA 
The Steuben County Industrial Development Agency has  announced that Matthew Bull has joined the agency's staff this month, as the Director of Community and Infrastructure Development.  Officials say Matt will assist local governments to develop their infrastructure capacity and focus on community development project implementation. 

The IDA is proud to announce that Matthew Bull has joined the agency's staff in March 2024 as the Director of Community and Infrastructure Development. In this role, Matt will lead and support the IDA’s assistance to local governments to develop their infrastructure capacity and focus on community development project implementation.

Jamie Johnson, Executive Director, said “The Steuben County IDA is thrilled to partner with Steuben County to bring Matt’s experience to assist our local municipalities with their infrastructure and community development needs. His enthusiasm for results-oriented development will be a great addition to our team and help expand the IDA's efforts to develop our local economic development ecosystem."

There Was A Close Call In A Bad Accident In Yates County 

In Yates County, the sheriff’s department reports that a 54 year old Penn Yan man was driving past a semi, and tried to pass the semi in the right lane when the semi went into the right lane.   The Penn Yan man’s vehicle became pinned under the tractor trailer.  The driver of the semi was not injured, the Penn Yan man was taken to Strong for non life threatening injuries.

Job Fair Planned For Corning Community 
There will be a job fair at Corning Community College and that’ll be on April 24 from 11am-2pm.  

Message From BEGWS - Street Work Coming Up In Bath

Bath Electric, Gas and Water Systems will resume work on Haverling Street in support of its efforts to provide safe and reliable utility services to our customers in a cost-effective manner. Natural gas service line work will take place from Liberty Street / Geneva Street to beyond the Village line on County Route 113 / Mitchellsville Road, near Muck Circle, while water service line work will resume at Gratton Drive and head north.

Assisting with natural gas service line work will be The DDS Companies who will drive marked vehicles, operate marked equipment, and carry identification indicating they are employees of the company 

We ask all travelers – vehicular and pedestrian – to exercise extreme caution while on Haverling Street and County Route 113 / Mitchellsville Road. Our priority is the safety of our employees, our contractors, and the public. Traffic on Haverling Street and County Route 113 / Mitchellsville Road may be restricted at times as our crews perform the necessary work required to tie into existing natural gas and water mains.

Work is scheduled to begin the week of March 25, 2024, weather permitting, and will continue through June of this year, in anticipation of scheduled paving work. Restoration work is anticipated to be completed this fall.

Early Voting Starts Saturday In Steuben County

Early Voting starts tomorrow for both the Republican and Democrat Presidential Primaries.   Hours for early voting – 9am-6pm.  There will early voting locally at the Steuben County Annex Building in Bath.  The Primary day will be Tuesday April  2.

Bath State Police And Other Barracks Prepare For Apr 8

The New York State Police, in close collaboration with other state, local, and federal law enforcement, emergency services, and transportation agencies, has meticulously developed an emergency operation plan. Our unwavering goal is to provide a comprehensive and uniform presence, ensuring the safety of both visitors and residents as they experience and travel home from the eclipse. Members of the State Police will implement security measures appropriate for large gatherings and take all necessary actions to maintain order and smooth traffic flow.

Building on past experiences, the planning process for this event has been proactive, aiming to address potential impacts within Troop E. Our goal is to minimize any adverse effects associated with the large influx of visitors to the local area. This approach is based on the lessons learned from the 2017 solar eclipse, where some regions experienced a 100 percent increase in their population in the days leading up to and during the eclipse.

Troop E Headquarters will operate as the command post for all State Police operations, with forward operating bases established at SP Zone Headquarters located in Rochester, Auburn, and Bath. Emergency Operations Centers (EOC) will also be located in every county, with State Police representatives there. The State Police plan to increase the number of available personnel during the event. Strike Teams will be strategically deployed to monitor traffic and respond rapidly to any issues that may interfere with the safe flow of traffic or affect the quick clearance of any incidents. The State Police will have additional aviation assets on hand to monitor traffic and perform rescue operations if needed. We will also have Marine, ATV/UTV, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Motorcycles, and UAS assets strategically located if needed.

Concerns for the area due to the influx of population:

- Potential for transportation system disruptions and/or impacts.

- Potential for delayed/disrupted emergency service responses and prolonged response times.

- Potential for stranded motorists.

- Out of the area visitors and potential weather/road concerns.

- Fuel infrastructure may not be able to support an increase in vehicular traffic.

- Gridlocked traffic may increase fuel, food, and water demand depending on duration.

- Cellular networks may be overloaded by high volume.

- Increase in 911 call volume.

- Do NOT park or stop in the roadway. If you wish to stop, find a safe location that does not interfere with traffic. 

The New York State Police make the following recommendations based on expectations:

- Plan on staying in the region the night of the event.

- If you can’t stay, fuel/charge up the day before the event.

- Have extra food and water in your vehicle for your trip; shop the day before.

- Local residents should avoid the roadways after the event.

- Have cellphones charged and bring chargers with you.

- Schools are recommended to have the day off or a half-day.

- Plan on being in traffic for an extended period.

- Plan on viewing the event from designated viewing sites.

- If you are going to view the eclipse, ensure you use the appropriate approved glasses.

- If from out of the area, don’t use vehicles that can’t travel for ten-plus hours without charging – stranded EVs in traffic will be towed.

The Search Is On For Two White Males 

On that attempted robbery of the ATM machine that happened in the 3am hour early Wednesday morning at the Kwik Fill gas station on Route 415 in Bath:  Bath State Troopers are looking for two white males who were seen running away from the scene yesterday.  "They were wearing masks and gloves," Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker said this morning.  "They do both appear to be white males, in their 20's or 30's - and that's a guestimate but we're not positive.  The New York State Police out of Bath are actively involved in this investigation and generating leads, so if anybody has any information please reach out to them, or any local law enforcement agency and they'll get the information to the State Police," Baker said.  

Xylazine Update - It's Now Here In This County

It was one year and 10 days ago that US Senator Chuck Schumer told CBS News last year about the dangers of animal medicine Xylazine, and how it was being used as a street drug.  "It can rot your skin, it can eat away at your bones, it can cause your legs to be amputated," Schumer said in March, 2023.  The latest now is that Steuben County officials say Xylazine has been spotted in this county, where it’s been mixed with cocaine, heroin and even marijuana.  DA Brooks Baker says the biggest danger with Xylazine is, you cannot use Narcan to reverse the effects of an overdose of Xylazine.   "What's really scary," Brooks Baker tells WVIN, "is that we've sort of gotten used to using Narcan to reverse overdoses from Fentynal and heroin - and people are readily carrying it, police officers have Narcan and so do first responders.  However 'tranq' this Xylazine substance, does not respond to Narcan.  So if you have somebody who has taken this Xylazine as it's being mixed with heroin, meth, and cocaine, if someone overdoses, you can't save them with Narcan," Baker said.  

RNG Is Being Produced Here In Bath

Steuben County officials and StreetInsider.com report that Renewable Natural Gas is being produced at the Steuben County Landfill. According to StreetInsider.com, the RNG is being delivered to the Corning Natural Gas Network for distribution. 

Thanks To The Girl Scouts In Woodhull

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office reports that Deputy Saltsman, while on Patrol in the Village of Addison the other day, ran into the Woodhull Girl Scouts who donated three boxes of cookies to Sheriff's Office as a way to show their appreciation.  "Thank you to these wonderful young ladies for their kindness, and he says the deputies have been enjoying the cookies," Sheriff Allard said. 

Numerous Trooper Cars Seen On Route 415 This Morning

Lots of State Police vehicles were at the Kwik Fill on Route 415 in Bath early this morning.  There is some damage to the front of the Kwik Fill.

UPDATE FROM STATE POLICE ABOUT KWIK FILL:

On March 20, 2024, at approximately 3:13 a.m., troopers from SP Bath responded to the Kwik Fill, located at 6765 State Route 415 in the town of Bath, for a police alarm.

A preliminary investigation revealed a stolen 1998 white Ford F-150 was used to crash through the building to gain entry. The suspects attempted to take the ATM and were unsuccessful. The vehicle fled the scene and became disabled across the road from the Kwik Fill. The suspects have fled the scene.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Steuben County Sheriff's Office and the Village of Bath Police Department.

Bath

Mayor Michael Sweet -  62 votes.  Sweet won the seat for the Mayor position with a two year term.   Trustees: Karen Causer –  61 votes, Jeffrey Muller -  70 votes.   Karen Causer and Jeffrey Muller won the seat for the two Trustee Position with a 4 year term.   In the Ba th Village Justice race the winner was Robert Plaskov – 77 Votes.  Robert Plaskov won the seat for the Justice position with a four year term.

 Hammondsport

Hammondsport Village trustees Leah Butler and Deborah Lynch win relection. Leah Butler 73 votes, Deborah Lynch 71 votes.

In Savona, Mike Horton  won the Savona Judge race – getting 25 votes.

The incumbents: Mayor Eric Tyner, Trustees Andrew Hubbard and Lannie Gay won in the Village of Avoca

CPP Students Go See Palmesano About Legislation

Assemblyman Phil Palmesano recently met with a group of student journalists from Corning Painted Post High School.  They were at the state capital to push for the state to pass the student journalist free speech act at educational facilities.  Palmesano says, "if the future is these students, the future is in good hands."

It’s village election day, voting is going on from 12pm until 9pm.

In Bath you vote at the Bath Municipal Building, 110 Liberty Street Bath.  In Hammondsport voting is at the Fred and Harriett Taylor Library 21 William Street Hammondsport.  Voting in Savona is at the Savona Village Hall, 15 McCoy Street. In Avoca, you vote at the Avoca Village Hall, at 3 Chase Street.  

Bath Man Is Facing Stalking/Criminal Contempt Charges
Bath Village Police are reporting that a 42 year old male, William Balcer, no address given, is charged for alleged repeated stalking incidents at an ex-girlfriends place on Geneva Street in Bath.  William Balcer is charged with 4^th degree stalking and 2^nd degree criminal contempt. 

Allegations Of Attempted Rape In The Town of Pulteney

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard says 33 year old Craig Ronquillo of Hornell has been charged with 1^st degree attempted rape, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child.  The alleged victim is under age 18, the alleged incident said to have happened in Pulteney.

DOT Remembers Their Employee - the Late Matt Howe

The New York State Department of Transportation says, it was five years ago this week, that a D.O.T. employee named Matt Howe, was killed by a truck driver in a work zone.  Officials say that the driver was found guilty of disobeying the state’s move over law.

Two Bath Residents Die In Tragic Accident In Yates Co

From The Yates County Sheriff's Department:

On March 16th at or about 6:12pm Yates County Deputies along with Branchport Keuka Park Fire, Penn Yan Ambulance and Yates County EMS responded to the intersection of Friend Road and West Sherman Hollow Road for the report of a one car motor vehicle accident. Initial investigation revealed Mr. Wolfe was traveling southeast on Friend Road when he failed to negotiate a curve, near Italy Friend Road, the vehicle then rolled several times before coming to rest in the ditch on the south side of Friend Road. Both occupants of the vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Yates County Coroner’s Office. The accident is under further investigation by the Yates County Accident Reconstruction Unit.

Sen Gillibrand:  My Law Protects SNAP Users 

Democrat US Senator Kirsten Gililbrand says those whose SNAP card info is stolen by skimmers, those residents can recover what they lost in their benefits, thanks to a law she got passed.  "Thanks to legislation I wrote and passed, families who were victims of SNAP skimming can get their stolen benefits replaced. And NYS extended the deadline to April 1st for certain beneficiaries."
