Another Mock DWI Event For Students Was Held Late Last Week - This Demonstration Was Put On In Cohocton
FROM SHERIFF JIM ALLARD: On Thursday, May 30 several members of the Steuben County Sheriff's Office participated in an interagency D.W.I Mock Drill for the Wayland-Cohocton Senior Class of 2024. The event took place on Mill Street in the Town of Cohocton where the students gathered to watch as multiple agencies mocked out a two-vehicle head on crash. The objective of a mock crash event is to educate young adults about the tragedy of traffic crashes - and to reinforce the importance of using seat belts, paying attention behind the wheel, and to show the consequences of drunk or impaired by drugs. During this event, Steuben County District Attorney, Brooks Baker narrated the scene as the mock crash took place and responding agencies arrived. His narration included actions of law enforcement as they performed a mock arrest of the driver, life saving actions of responding medical and rescue agencies as well as the possible legal processes that may result from events of this kind.
After the the mock crash, SCSO Inv. Dean Swan, a previous DRE Deputy spoke to students about the laws of Drinking and Driving, and Drugs and Driving. Kim Clark, SCSO Dispatcher/DWI - VIP Speaker/Defensive Driving Instructor) spoke to students about making good driving choices and her own personal experience with the loss of her oldest daughter, Emilee in a fatal car. SCSO Inv. Ellison, Charlie Chick (DWI - VIP Speaker), and Kim Clark assisted with SIDNE - Impaired Driving Simulator Vehicle drills that allow students to experience first hand how it feels to drive under the influence of .08 BAC, .15-.25 BAC, and marijuana use.
Thank you to all agencies that participated in the event including, Cohocton Fire/EMS, Wayland-Springwater EMS, AMR, Emergency Services of Steuben County, First Net, NYSP, SCSO, Steuben County DA, Cohocton Police Department, and Wayland Police Department. A very special thanks to Michele Curtain, Event Coordinator/VIP Speaker/Teacher at Wayland Cohocton School for all she does to put this event together.
Our goal of a mock crash event is to reduce crashes, injuries and deaths involving younger drivers and their passengers by using visuals to demonstrate real-life consequences, if even one life can be saved our efforts will be a success.
