It's Solar Eclipse Day - Troopers Say Drive Safely

State Police are reminding everyone who is driving today, to be as patient, as the roads are expected to be filled with cars, of those coming in to see the eclipse.  

 

Longtime Local Firefighter Has Died 

Officials from the Bath Volunteer Fire Department say that  Hammondsport Firefighter Bill Fries Sr, has passed away. 

"The Bath Volunteer Fire Department sends our deepest condolences and prayers to the Hammondsport Fire Department , Chief Bill Fries and his family for the passing of Bill Fries Sr. who dedicated his life to their department. Bill was always full of life and made everyone laugh. He was a brother firefighter but also a dear friend and he will be truly missed. Rest in peace brother, until we meet again."

Graduation For Corning's Police Academy Is This Weekend

There is a graduation ceremony coming up this Friday at Corning Community College.  That’s for the Law Enforcement Academy there.   Academy Session Director Zach Stewart tells WVIN that there are 13 graduates this year.  This is the 45th class for the Corning Community College Police Academy.  

 

Schumer: I Have Two Concerns About This Merger

Capital One is buying Discover Card.  The New York Daily News reports that Democrat US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says two things about that.  Schumer says many cardholders might not know about the merger and they should, and the senator says less competition  could mean higher interest rates, bigger penalties and other issues.
