Races In The Upcoming Local Village Elections

On Tuesday of next week there will be village elections.  In Bath, Mayor Mike Sweet and village trustees Melonie Coots and Mark Bardean are all seeking re-election.  In the Village of Hammondsport, three candidates are running for two seats on the village board: incumbents Leah Butler and Robert Kleckner are seeking re-election, also running in next Tuesday’s election in Hammonsport, is Mary Jane Bray.  In the Village of Savona’s election, there is a trustee’s race between Democrat Jessica Stevens and Republican Chris McCann.
 

Southport Correctional Closed Today

In November Governor Kathy Hochul announced that Southport Correctional Facility in Chemung County, was going to be shut down on March 10th and that’s today, and Southport has officially closed down.

Suspect Charged For Allegedly Starting Fire At The Chemung Co Fairgrounds

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of 38-year old  Jeremy Montgomery of Elmira, for Arson in the Third Degree, a Class C Felony, Burglary in the Third Degree and Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, both Class E Felonies.   Montgomery is accused of intentionally starting a fire inside a concession stand at the Chemung County Fairgrounds in the early morning of March 6, 2022, which completely destroyed the concession stand.  He also accused of forcefully entering a horse stall at the Fairgrounds and stealing property from within the horse stall before stealing a pickup truck parked at the Fairground.  Officials also say Montgomery is a suspect in an additional fire set at a local business located near the Fairgrounds and additional charges are expected related to that investigation.
