State Eviction Moratorium Expires Today
Today, the New York State eviction moratorium ends after being extended  in 2021. The  Cuomo administration put in the pandemic-era law so tenants could be allowed to delay rental payments if they experienced hardship during the pandemic. Area landlords say after almost two years of not being paid by some residents, they are now struggling.  As the moratorium expires, local organizations like Arbor Housing are trying to help tenants and landlords by offering counseling and other services for residents who qualify. The Emergency Rental Assistance Program, (or ERAP) is accepting applications again to help tenants who fell behind on rent payments during the pandemic. Though those who apply this time around aren't guaranteed to get funding, a pending application will provide a tenant temporary protection from eviction.

Steuben DPW Urges Caution on the Road for Tomorrow's Snowstorm
Steuben County Public Works is preparing for the Nor'easter snowstorm expected to hit the area tomorrow. Deputy Commissioner Todd Housel said the DPW’s preparation begins days before the snow storm is anticipated in our area. Housel says part of the early-prep process is having salt and sand “mixed, fully stocked and ready to go,”  while also checking trucks and their tires. When there's an accumulation of six to 12 inches of snow, the county’s plowers work in sequence together and are dispatched by two district supervisors: one in the North and South.  Plows stay out and go around until about 9 or 10 at night. Housel reminds the public to be cautious of their surroundings and patient on the road as plows will be traveling at 20 mph to evenly spread salt on the roads. Drivers are also urged to look out for turn signals on the roads as it gets very snowy out, especially with those snow plows moving so slowly.
