NY’s IRC STill Deliberating Redistricting Maps
New York’s Independent Redistricting Commission has not yet reached an agreement on district maps…except when it comes to the Southern Tier region. The bi-partisan Independent Redistricting Commission met virtually yesterday to approve one set of newly drawn maps to present to the state legislature. They could not come to a single consensus and are supposed to present two sets of maps, each drawn by the respective political party. Southern Tier lawmakers say they were most concerned about preserving the rural congressional district. Local Assemblyman Phil Palmesano said “There was such a push to put an independent redistricting commission in place to take the politics out of it, but it didn’t seem like this was really able to be successful,” The state legislature decides next week between the two sets of maps or to throw both of them out entirely. If the latter happens, the Independent Redistricting Commission must come up with a consensus on these maps by the end of February. Palmesano also remarked: “The question will be, if the maps get sent to the legislature, will the legislative majorities agree and continue to adhere to that thinking of preserving a Southern-Tier-based congressional district.”
