Rainy Christmas Morning Expected and Warmer Tomorrow
Today, we are expecting a rainy Christmas morning. Scattered showers are anticipated in the eastern half of the Southern Tier region where we could see moderate rainfall up to over half an inch. Today’s highs will be in the upper 40’s. Tonight may be mainly cloudy as chances of rain decrease. Some rain showers could turn to snow as a cold front quickly moves out of the Twin Tiers in the evening. Lows in the mid 30’s. Sunday will be more dry with mostly sunny skies Highs to be in the low 40’s.
Hochul Says COVID Surging & State Test Site Will Be in Watkins Glen
During a virtual update to New Yorkers yesterday morning, Governor Kathy Hochul updated the public that over 44,000 new COVID-19 cases reported statewide Friday in the last 24 hours-up from nearly 39,000 reported the day before. Hochul also gave new guidance on returning to work after having COVID and an endorsement of the “test to stay” strategy for schools. Hochul also announced 13 new state testing sites to address the recent surge in COVID-19 cases including one here in the Southern Tier region that will take place at North Franklin Street in Watkins Glen at the state park gift shop and cafe. Steuben Accepts Vaccine Funding, Signs WAGA Contract & More
On Monday during the regular session of the Steuben County Legislature, county lawmakers accepted $169,415 in additional funds from the U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services’ COVID-19 Vaccine Response Grant to comply with existing and future guidance regarding increased COVID-19 vaccination and other vaccine uptake. County Lawmakers also awarded a contract to WAGA Energy Inc. to dispose of 850 tons per day of solid waste and the decomposition of the waste generates methane gas, a known greenhouse gas. First launched in Steuben under retired county Public Works Commissioner Vince Spagnoletti, the landfill is one of the few systems in the state to convert greenhouse gases into electricity and reduce the carbon footprint. Steuben County Legislators also Authorized a capital account for the Civil Defense and Public Works renovations work in 2022.
Holiday DWI Crackdown Continues to New Year’s Day
State and local law enforcement agencies throughout NY State will be stepping up patrols targeting impaired driving during the holiday travel season. Governor Hochul announced the high visibility engagement campaign runs through Saturday, January 1st. Temporary Lane Closures Suspended on NY Highways
Temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on NY State highways will continue to be suspendedthrough Monday, December 27th at 6am. Construction will also be suspended from Thursday, December 30th through Monday, January 3rd at 6am to ease travel for motorists. Motorists should be aware that some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs. The construction suspension aligns with NY State’s Drivers First Initiative, which prioritizes the convenience of motorists to minimize traffic congestion and travel delays due to road and bridge work.
