23 new COVID-19 cases in Steuben County

The Steuben County Public Health Department received notification that 23 Steuben County residents tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total to 6,431 confirmed cases, 200 of which are currently active. Three individuals are associated with Snell Farm Children's Center in Bath, one individual is associated with T&R Towing and Environmental Services, one individual is associated with Alstom, one individual is an employee of the Steuben Center in Bath, and five individuals are associated with the following schools: Corning Community College, Corning-Painted Post High School, Hornell High School, North Hornell Elementary.

 

Major motorcycle accident in Big Flats

New York State Police, among others, responded to a major motorcycle accident that took place near the on-ramp to I-86 on Chambers Road in Big Flats yesterday. The crash involved two motorcycles, one red and one white, and an SUV. Although the SUV was overturned on its roof and a motorcycle helmet was spotted lying in the road, the condition of all the involved parties is unknown at this time.

 

Steuben County Sheriff’s Department celebrates its 225th anniversary

Local, state, and federal officials gathered yesterday in person to celebrate the 225 years of service the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office has provided. Sheriff Jim Allard issued commendations to highlight actions by his department and others. Assemblyman Phil Palmisano, Assemblyman Joe Giglio, Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes, and Mike Rogers from Sen O’Mara’s office presented a framed NYS Legislative Resolution, which passed both houses of state legislature-Senate and Assembly, to commemorate 225 years of service.

 

Steuben County Sheriff’s Office condemns “National Rape Day” hoax

The Steuben County penned a letter strongly condemning a rather troubling internet hoax that recently surfaced on social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok, in which April 24th is referred to as “National Rape Day”, and claim some type of organized sexual assault program would take place. In response to this revolting trend, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office said via press release “And though this is nothing more than viral urban myth it presents an opportunity for all of us to do the right thing to stop it and stand together against sexual violence. Sheriff Allard wants all Steuben County residents to know “sexual assault is a crime that affects not only the victim, but the victim’s family and the community, forever. It is never to be treated lightly and will never be tolerated. We will bring all resources to bear to investigate and arrest in any sexual assault case.”

 

Steuben Tractor Certification Programs graduates nine

The Steuben County 4-H/Youth Development Program recently graduated nine 4-H members from the 2021 National Safe Tractor & Machinery Operation Certification Program. This certification allows youth 14 & 15 years of age to legally operate farm equipment for hire. New graduates included: Alex Knowles, Korbin Herrington, Lexy Wilson, Camden Plank, Prestin Plank, Diana Slayton, Louisa Slayton, Sarah Slayton, and Aidan Porter.

 

Guthrie doctor dies in helicopter crash

Dr. Sanjay Kansara, Anesthesiologist Guthrie Robert Packer hospital, was killed in a helicopter crash in which he was the pilot in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, late Thursday night, his wife confirmed. The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time.
