Alstom receives contract to build rail cars for Chicago based Metra
Alstom has received an initial order to supply 200 push-pull commuter rail cars from the commuter rail system, Metra, who serves the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. This initial order is estimated to be worth around $770 million. This follows the Metra Board of Directors’ approval in January 2021 to award Alstom a vehicle procurement contract for up to 500 rail cars. The cars will be built at Alstom’s rolling stock Centre of Excellence. The Alstom Hornell site will lead the project, and other Alstom sites, such as Rochester will support the project.
Wayfair to close Big Flats call center
Employees at the Wayfair call center near the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport in Big Flats will be working virtually after the company has decided to shut down the building, per a company spokesperson. As recently as 2018, the company announced that at least 450 people would be hired for the call center with the possibility to expand to in excess of 500. At the time of the location’s opening, the President of the Southern Tier Economic Growth projected the call center could generate as much as $20 million for the local economy. How many employees will be affected by this decision is unknown at the moment.
Hornell Area Humane Society, Finger Lakes SPCA team up with Steuben County to reduce number of feral cats
The Hornell Area Humane Society (HAHS) and Finger Lakes SPCA (FLSPCA) are working in conjunction with Steuben County to spay and neuter feral cats as part of their Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate & Return (TNVR) programs, and the Steuben County government has agreed to partner with the Hornell Area Humane Society to subsidize and expand the county-wide project, according to a press release from HAHS. The first Spay/Neuter Blitz was held in 2020, which resulted in nearly 70 feral cats being vaccinated and were sterilized. the goal is to “significantly” raise that number this year. Multiple clinics will be held this April.
15 new COVID-19 cases in Steuben County
The Steuben County Public Health Department has reported 15 Steuben County residents have tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total to 5,811 confirmed cases, 117 of which are currently active. One individual is associated with Siemens Energy in Painted Post, and one individual is associated with Walmart in Painted Post
Governor Cuomo gives update on COVID, State budget, and more during Wednesday briefing
In his Wednesday briefing, Governor Andrew Cuomo covered an array of topics. He announced that New York State has surpassed 8 million vaccine doses administered statewide. He also said that he’s “obsessed” with getting the state budget done by April 1st, but because of public health concerns and virtual negotiations, he said he would expect it to be a few days late. The governor said some of the top priorities for the budget include, legalization of cannabis, public safety and police reform, rent relief, and nursing home reform. The governor also said he would not comment on the ongoing investigations into his sexual assault allegations, or the allegations made recently against Congressman Tom Reed.
