Driver Sent to Hospital After Crash on I-86
Last night at 9:51pm, the Bath Volunteer Fire Department, Bath Volunteer Ambulance, AMR Advanced Life Support and New York State Police were dispatched to a truck accident on I-86 between Bath Exits 38 and 39 with entrapment. On scene, two tractor trailers in the westbound lane were found after one had run into the rear of the other. The cab of the second truck had separated from the truck’s chassis and on its driver’s side along the edge of the highway. One truck was carrying potting soil and the other was loaded with bananas. The driver was in the cab but was not pinned, just unable to get out of the cab until first responders broke out the windshield and the driver was able to walk out on his own. The driver of the first truck was transported by the Bath Volunteer Ambulance Corps for neck and back injuries. The cause of the incident is unknown to fire department officials.

 

Avoca Man Arrested for Driving While Impaired
A 41-year-old Avoca man is behind bars for reportedly driving while intoxicated and under the influence of drugs. Steuben County Sheriff's Office reports Kory Partridge was found injured and unresponsive on Liberty Street in Hammondsport and an investigation found he illegally had marijuana and non-prescribed narcotics on his person. January 3rd, Partridge crashed into a shed and garage on State Route 54A and was arrested on Monday for multiple charges including Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Collision.

 

One New COVID Death; 37 More Cases
37 more Steuben County residents tested positive for COVID-19 and brings the total to 4,965 confirmed cases, 321 of which are currently active. The health department reports another virus-related death, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in Steuben County to 160.  The individual was a male resident of Steuben Center who died while hospitalized at the age of 84. Public Health Director Darlene Smith says “Each death continues to be a tremendous loss for our community.” 

 

Reed Wants Corning Inc Vial Makers Vaccinated Immediately
Corning Incorporated makes the Valor glass vials that contain the COVID vaccine and Congressman Tom Reed wants the workers making the vials to be vaccinated immediately. In a statement, Reed said he fears that if the plant becomes a hot spot for the virus, that the production for these vials will slow down, causing a lag in vaccine availability.

 

All Upstate Orange and Yellow Restrictions Lifted
All Orange and Yellow zone COVID restrictions in upstate New York have been lifted. Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement, citing the drops in COVID positivity rates across Upstate New York. State officials stressed certain statewide restrictions continue. For example, gyms must limit capacity to 33 percent while retailers are limited to 50 percent. No more than 10 people can gather inside a home…the number moves to 50 for non-residential gatherings. 

 

O’Mara Highlights the Need for State Support of Local Roads
NY State Senator Tom O’Mara of Big Flats and who is the newly appointed Ranking Member on the Senate Finance Committee, this week highlighted the need for a stronger state commitment to local roads and bridges across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and throughout the Upstate New York region. O’Mara made his comments at the opening of a series of legislative hearings on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed State budget.  Over the next several weeks, the Legislature’s fiscal committees will hold 13 virtual hearings examining Cuomo’s proposals in key issue areas. O’Mara has been a leader in the Local Roads Matter campaign.

 

Corning Inc. Shows Growth in 4th Quarter of 2020
Corning Inc. says it achieved a 17% year-over-year core sales growth in the 4th quarter. The company says it also expanded margins in second half and generated $948 million in free cash flow in 2020. Chairman and CEO Wendell Weeks said the Company delivered outstanding fourth-quarter results, as each of the businesses grew sales and profits year over year.
