Steuben Sees One More COVID Death & 53 New Cases
COVID has claimed the life of another Steuben County resident. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in Steuben County to 139. The individual was a male resident of the Village of Arkport who died while hospitalized at the age of 81. Meanwhile, 53 new virus cases were reported in Steuben Wednesday. Since March there have been over 3,400 confirmed cases. Today, there are 605 active cases.

 

Steuben County Concludes 2020 With Major Achievements
Though it posed a challenge, much of Steuben County’s notable achievements in 2020 are a result of the pandemic. Despite new state requirements, pandemic guidelines and more, turn-out during early and General Election Day voting turnout surpassed previous years. Steuben officials formed a proposed budget with state and federal assistance uncertain, county employees stepped up to take an early retirement incentive, to avoid an increase in the state tax cap that would result in state penalties for a budget $194 million with a slight increase in the $51 million tax levy. County Office Building renovations were delayed for the plan for large portions of the main building to become a cohesive court system in accordance with state mandates. Plans include additional court rooms, secure holding areas and waiting rooms, more offices for attorneys and an extensive legal library. Steuben also was proud to have held a pandemic-friendly County Fair drive thru in August as the 200-year-old county fair added another year to its historic long run.

 

Bills & NY Reach Agreement for Fan Attendance at Playoff Game
When the Bills hit the field for their first playoff game, fans will watch in the stands. Governor Cuomo announced yesterday the state and the team reached an agreement on a pilot program allowing for some fans to be present at the game. The state and the Bills had been working together recently in an attempt to broker an agreement. Under the pilot program, about 6,700 season ticketholders will be allowed in the stadium. Masks and distancing are required. Tests will be conducted before fans enter the stadium, and contact tracing work will take place as they leave.

 

A Chance of Freezing Rain Tomorrow
There is a chance for icy precipitation tomorrow as a system moves by the region. Freezing rain is anticipated late-Friday afternoon into the evening. The Southern Tier and Southern Finger Lakes regions have the greatest chance of freezing rain with the heaviest precipitation will end between midnight and 3 a.m. on Saturday. Showers continue into the weekend, and Sunday some light snow is possible.

 

NYS Suspends Prison Visitation Temporarily
New York State has temporarily suspended visitation at all state prisons due to rising COVID-19 cases among the incarcerated population, staff and the surrounding communities. The suspension continues until further notice. According to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision website, non-contact legal visits will still be allowed to continue under previously announced protocols.
