Calkins Named WETM’s Male Fall MVP
After winning 56 percent out of the thousands of votes casted, The WETM-18 Male Fall MVP was named soccer standout Keefer Calkins. The Haverling Rams’ junior scored 29 goals and had six assists, helping Haverling win their third straight Section V Class B2 title this season. Calkins also performed well in the sectional semifinals with five goals in a 6-0 win against Williamson.


Three More Steuben Residents Die from COVID; 90 More Test Positive
Steuben County health officials report that three more residents at Absolut Care Three Rivers have died from COVID-19 complications. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in Steuben County to 99 while 90 more Steuben County residents tested positive for COVID-19 since Saturday.  This brings the total to 1,858 confirmed cases.  There are 253 currently active cases.


Allegany County Crash Kills Liverpool Man
State Police are investigating the cause of a deadly crash in Allegany County involving a man from Livonia and one from Liverpool. Police say it happened in a rural area of the town of Grove Saturday night. Troopers were called to Route 70, near the Swain Ski Resort, where they found a vehicle that had flipped over. They say the driver, 48-year-old William Hitchcock of Livonia suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger, 43-year-old Brian Hitchcock of Liverpool, died at the scene. The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the cause.


DEC Releases Deer Management Plan for Public View and Comment
The New York State DEC’s NYS Deer Management Plan has been drafted and released for public review and comment. The new plan builds upon the DEC’s 2011 deer management plan and aims to guide deer management actions taken by the DEC to balance natural resource protection, public safety, and recreational and economic interests for the next 10 years. The newly-released draft includes a new method for setting deer population objectives, approaches for harvesting antlerless deer, and developing new opportunities for deer management in urban and suburban areas across New York State. The DEC is urging the public to review the new draft plan and will accept public comments through December 28th, 2020. The full plan can be reviewed on the Department of Environmental Conservation website.


AAA Shares Winter Tips for Safe Driving
With the official start to winter less than three weeks away, law enforcement officials and AAA are warning drivers to be safe on slippery roads and are working to prepare drivers for the first official snowfall of the season. Motorists are urged to allow themselves extra time to get to their destination while taking snow accumulation into consideration, and using their best judgement to determine whether or not it is a wise decision to be on the roads. AAA says other tips include keeping a full tank of gas, making sure you have windshield washer fluid in your car, and keeping your car clear of snow. For more winter driving safety tips, click here


Cuomo Urges Public to Use Caution to Avoid Holiday COVID Spread
Governor Andrew Cuomo is urging people in New York to remain vigilant and smart during the holiday season - as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations climb. Cuomo, speaking to reporters yesterday, introduced a series of directives to hospitals that will help them gather the staff, PPE, equipment and space needed if hospitalization rates get worse. Elective surgeries will be canceled starting Friday in Erie County. Governor Cuomo says elective surgeries in other parts of the state might have to be canceled if more hospitals get overwhelmed.
