18 new COVID-19 cases in Steuben County
The Steuben County Public Health Department has received notification that 18 new Steuben County residents tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the county total to 1,569 confirmed cases, 245 of which are currently active. Four of the individuals are residents of the Village of Bath, three from the City of Corning, two from the Town of Lindley, and from the Villages of Addison and Painted Post. Five individuals are contacts to previously reported positives. One of the individuals is an employee of Corning Center, four are employees of Corning, Inc. at the Diesel Plant, one is an employee of the Bath VA, one is a student of the Dana Lyon Middle School, and one individual is an employee of the Bath DMV.
One new COVID-19 death in Steuben County
The Steuben County Public Health Department received notification of the death of an individual who had previously tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in Steuben County to 90. The individual was a male resident of Absolut Care Three Rivers who died at age 92 while hospitalized.
Bath DMV to close temporarily next week due to positive COVID-19 test
Due to a positive COVID-19 case within the Bath DMV Offices, the location will be closed all next week. Those with appointments scheduled on Monday the 23rd, Tuesday the 24th, and Wednesday the 25th should not report. To reschedule, please visit https://steubencountydmvbath.setmore.com/ and select a new appointment. Staff will also work to find alternative accommodations for those with cancelled appointments and will provide an update next week.
Southern Tier Red Cross Chapter seeking “Real Heroes” nominations
The Finger Lakes Area of the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross is accepting nominations for its annual Real Heroes Event which will go virtual this year. The Real Heroes Event honors local heroes in Steuben, Schuyler and Chemung Counties. Steuben County AmeriCorps/volunteers join together to provide food to those stuck at home
Nearly a dozen Steuben County AmeriCorps Seniors and RSVP volunteers packed 360 emergency shelf-stable food boxes Thursday at the Bath Central School bus garage for residents relying on home-delivered meals. Their efforts will reduce the impact of the pandemic in the event current spikes force senior meal centers to close. Steuben AmeriCorps Senior Coordinator Christine Towner said the Food Bank of the Southern Tier provided 7,978 pounds of food valued just shy of $14,000. The efforts were assisted by Shirley’s Lumber in Bath and the county Public Works Department.
Hearing to be held on Steuben County budget Monday
On Monday at 11:30 a.m., at the county Annex, 20 East Morris St., Bath, a public hearing will be held regarding the proposed 2021 budget for Steuben County, currently sitting at $194 million. If approved, the plan comes in well below the state’s mandated tax cap, with an increase of just under 1 percent increase, up roughly $500,000 in the county’s proposed levy of $51 million. The average tax rate is expected to drop 14 cents per $1,000 from $8.07 in 2020 down to $7.93 next year if the budget is adopted.
