County Road 119 Bridge Closed Starting Tomorrow
The bridge on County Road 119 over the Canisteo River in the Town of Cameron will remain closed to all traffic tomorrow through Wednesday, November 4th according to Steuben County Public Works. The closure is to continue approach work to the new bridge, located between McMaster Road and County Route 10. There will not be an onsite detour. Travelers are advised to use existing town and county roads as a detour.

 

Steuben Sees 6 New COVID Deaths; 23 More Cases
23 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Steuben County. Among the new cases… four are with the state police, one works at Corning, Inc. and another works at the Elmira Correctional Facility. Health officials in Steuben County reported yesterday that nursing home administrators failed to report six deaths caused by COVID-19. Steuben’s Public Health department said the six deaths occurred at the Corning Center for Rehabilitation between September 30th and October 17th and brings the total number of deaths in the county to 80. The facility failed to notify Public Health of the deaths at the time they occurred, under previously established communication protocols, leading to this reporting delay.

 

O’Mara Receiving “Guardian of Small Business” Award
State Senator Tom O’Mara receives the 2020 “Guardian of Small Business” award from the National Federation of Independent Business of New York State this afternoon  at the Arnot Art Museum on Lake Street in Elmira. According to organization, the “Guardian of Small Business” designation is “the highest honor the Federation bestows upon state legislators. It is recognized as the state’s leading voice of advocacy for small businesses throughout New York. Senator O’Mara is one of only six state senators receiving the award this year.

 

Halloween Hours Set Across Steuben
Halloween is set for this weekend on Saturday and some Villages, Cities and Towns across Steuben County will be participating in the trick-or-treating tradition while others will opt out of the festivity. The Village of Bath will be holding their trick or treat Saturday on Halloween night from 6 to 8pm. The Villages of Canisteo and Savona also host trick or treat the same Halloween Saturday night from 6 to 8pm. Village of Painted Post has canceled trick-or-treating altogether while the City of Hornell is advising against trick or treating and not setting hours. The Town of Erwin has also declined establishing a trick or treat time but did say they encourage parents to provide a safe, fun Halloween experience for their families.

 

Cuomo Gives Cities and Counties OK to Issue School Mask Mandates
After receiving a request from a county executive downstate, Gov. Andrew Cuomo says county and city governments will be allowed to issue mask mandates for students in area schools. Gov. Cuomo made the announcement during a COVID-19 briefing yesterday morning.
