Five More Die from COVID; 91 in Steuben Test Positive
Five more residents of Corning Center have died from COVID-19 related complications with victims in their 80’s and 90’s. Meanwhile, the health department says another 91 county residents have tested positive for coronavirus. This brings the total to 781 confirmed cases, 330 of which are currently active. New cases include 14 individuals who are employees of Upstate Farms Cheese in Campbell; 11 are employees or residents of Pathways; One is an employee of Tuscarora Elementary; One is an employee of Corning Painted Post Middle School; Two are students of Corning Painted Post High School; Two individuals are students of Bradford Central School and one is a student of Campbell-Savona Elementary School. Governor Cuomo said statewide shutdown is possible, but not guaranteed and the state is keeping a close eye of clusters of COVID-19 hotspots that have emerged.
Steuben County Inmate Arrested for Possessing Drugs
A 24-year-old Steuben County woman was arrested for allegedly possessing drugs inside the Steuben County Jail. According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, 24-year-old Megan Dean allegedly possessed “two quantities of suspected fentanyl while incarcerated.” Dean was charged with Promoting Prison Contraband in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree. Dean was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court, remanded to the Steuben County Jail and is currently committed on several other charges.
Bath Man’s “Dad Joke” Page Goes Globally Viral
Bath native Woody Latour has made news on WETM for his contribution of Dad jokes to the community since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic. Latour’s daughter gave him the idea to start posting a daily dad joke outside of his Haverling Street home. Initially, people from as far away as Alabama tuned into his Facebook page daily to see what kind of silly dad joke Woody would tell each day. His jokes are brightening spirits all over the world now as far as South Africa and Australia. Our own WVIN has him send them his daily dad joke to air every morning for local listeners.
Mitrano Appearing at League of Women Voters ZOOM Forum Tonight
Congressional candidate Tracy Mitrano appears tonight at a League of Women Voters candidates forum on ZOOM at 6:00 p.m. One other contender to represent New York’s 23rd district will appear with her: a Libertarian candidate from Chautauqua County. The League invited incumbent Republican Tom Reed, but he has declined.
O’Mara Sponsoring Registration for NYS Parole Board Oversight
State Senator Tom O’Mara will help sponsor legislation in the state Senate to establish stronger legislative oversight of the state Parole Board, which has come under fire over the past two years by O’Mara and other state legislators for its leniency in releasing those convicted of killing police and other individuals with violent criminal histories.
BU Investigated by Dept of Education for Incident Last November
Binghamton University is being investigated by the US Department of Education due to concerns over a possible violation of freedom of speech as well as the Higher Education Act. According to WBNG, an incident occurred last November where College Republicans hosted a tabling event in a common space. BU College Republicans they were sharing information with one another about a visiting speaker and the Department of Education says another unaffiliated group displayed signs of support for the Second Amendment, causing roughly 200 students to protest in return with material from the College Republicans being destroyed in the incident. The report says the university supposedly did not protect freedom of speech rights for College Republicans and the University knew that protests would disrupt events the College Republicans were hosting.

The new Ceramic Shield technology was unveiled as Apple released its new product lineup, including the iPhone 12. Vice President of iPhone Product Marketing Kaiann Drance gave Corning Inc. a shout-out for their contribution to the device’s latest glass technology.
