201st Steuben County Fair Concludes
This year’s Steuben County Fair concluded Saturday in Bath with a car show, drawing exhibits from across the region. Food vendors, agricultural displays and a market sale held by the Steuben County Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H clubs also were on hand during the COVID-19-shortened two-day event. The event marks the fair's 201st year and maintains its status as the nation's longest continuously running county fair.

 

Cuomo Announces Guidelines for High School Sports
Students, parents and community members are wondering about the status of high school sports as schools are set to reopen across the state in September. Today, Governor Cuomo updated the public about where the state oh high school sports currently stands with lower-risk sports allowed to begin play September 21st. Not all high school sports will be authorized to play once practice for sports resumes-this applies to higher risk sports with high physical contact. Teams will not be allowed to go outside the school’s phased reopening regions to practice or play until October 19th.

 

NWS Reports Risk of Severe Thunderstorms Tomorrow
The National Weather service says there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms tomorrow. In the daily hazardous weather outlook, forecasters say a front will pass through the region tomorrow, possibly accompanied by strong to severe thunderstorms. The primary time of concern will be late morning to mid-afternoon. If thunderstorms do indeed develop, damaging wind gusts could occur.

 

Arkport Zoning Board Holds Dollar General Hearing
The Arkport Zoning Board of Appeals conducts a public hearing on the variance application for a new Dollar General planned for State Route 36, which has been a particularly controversial issue for the village. The meeting will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Arkport Village Hall and open to the public. Anyone attending will be required to wear a mask. Earlier this month, 40 people attended a separate hearing.

 

Congressman Reed Talks Second Stimulus
Congressman Tom Reed says is looking forward to a compromise being reached on a second round of COVID-19 stimulus relief. The Democratic proposal has called for the extra weekly round of $600 unemployment benefits included in the first package with many Republicans wanting a smaller amount. The Democratic proposal calls for the extra 600 dollars a week included in the first package, but many Republicans want a smaller amount. President Trump signed an executive order providing an additional $400 per week, with the federal government covering $300 worth. Cuomo says the state can’t afford to pay recipients the state’s $100 monthly share due to the state’s budget shortfalls.

 

Fitness Centers Reopen Across the State
Gyms and fitness centers began reopening today in New York State. Facilities that reopen will be subject to rigorous health and safety standards and all gyms and fitness centers will be able to open by September 2nd. Facilities can only operate at 33% capacity, require face coverings and implement social distancing. Shared equipment must be cleaned after each use.

 

Wegmans Announces Peach Recall
Wegmans announced a recall of some of its Wegmans-branded fresh peaches, due to salmonella concerns. Peaches being recalled were sold between June 1st and August 19th. Wegmans also said some bakery products containing the peaches are being recalled as well. Wegmans offers a full refund of the recalled products at their service desk.
