Exits 39 and 40 Closed on I-86 West
Today, I-86 westbound from Savona Exit 40 to Bath Exit 39 will be closed for a couple of hours for emergency repairs according to Bath Volunteer Fire Department. NYSDOT is controlling traffic at intersections along the State Route 425 detour during the road closure.

 

Shethar Street in Hammondsport Remains Closed Beyond Labor Day
A section of Shethar Street in downtown Hammondsport near the square has been closed and will be throughout the summer and fall months to allow for local bars, restaurants and other businesses to have outdoor seating through the pandemic. The village has erected tents for patrons to sit under and have music at the square on the weekends. The closing will extend until after Labor Day.

 

Guthrie Pediatrics on Chambers Road Not Taking Walk-In Appt.s
Guthrie Southern Tier Pediatrics Office on Chambers Road in Horseheads is no longer accepting walk-in appointments because they have been suspended, according to the company’s release. Steuben Elections Board Secures $85K for Cyber Security
Cyber security funding for November 3rd General Election in Steuben County is expected to be about $85,000 to ensure the security of the elections system this November. Steuben County Board of Elections says the commissioners expect an unusually high turnout at the polls and absentee ballots this presidential election year. Most of the funds are likely to be used by Steuben’s IT department for security enhancements for all county operations and there may be additional federal funding available which would bring the total award up to $150,000.Steuben’s board recently participated in a three-day virtual seminar hosted by the state, which included real-world scenarios as well as potential risks including social media manipulation, disruption of voter registration information, malware infections, and the exploitation of state and county board of election networks.

 

McDermott Signs Contract Extension to Coach Bills to 2025
Sean McDermott transformed the Buffalo Bills as the coach ended the team’s playoff drought in three short years, helping the team make its comeback into a division favorite and AFC contenders. McDermott first arrived as Bills coach in 2017 and today signed a 6-year contract extension that runs through 2025.

 

State Election Officials Concerned with Funding Upcoming Election
State election officials are concerned about the absentee ballot requests flooding prior to the November 3rd election with as many as half of the eight million New Yorkers expected to vote in November requesting an absentee ballot. Election officials urged lawmakers at a hearing in Albany to provide more funding. Nearly 40 percent of votes in the June primaries were cast by absentee after Governor Cuomo announced the state would mail applications for absentee ballots with prepaid postage to all registered voters because of the fear of COVID-19 back in April.

 

Cuomo Signed Seatbelt Law Yesterday
Governor Cuomo signed legislation yesterday that requires all passengers in motor vehicles over the age of 16 to wear a seat belt. This would be a change from the current law which states passengers aged 16 and older are only required to wear a seat belt in the front passenger seat next to the driver.The new law takes effect on November 1st. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee estimates 30 percent of highway deaths in New York are occupants who were unrestrained by a seat belt.
