Title Winners Finish at 38th Wineglass Marathon
The 38th Annual Wineglass Marathon was yesterday. A 23-year-old marathon first-timer from Geneseo named Alexander Burks took home the men’s division title with a time of 2:34:46.56. Placing first in the women’s title, 35-year-old Laura Hagley from New Hampshire finished with a time of 2:44:07.74. The Wineglass Marathon was Hagley’s 10th marathon and she will compete in the Olympic Trials marathon in Atlanta, Georgia in February. Ben Robinson won the half marathon with a time of 1:10:29.85 and Laurel Leone was the women’s winner in 1:17:43.23. Setting the half-marathon world record for bilateral below-the-knee amputees was 31-year-old Brian Reynolds from New Jersey with a time of 1:17:04.9!

 

Governor Cuomo Announces Plans to Fight HABs
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launching of a new state initiative to fight harmful algal blooms across New York State. A new system designed to combat Harmful Algal Blooms is being tested and will involve a Mobile Harvester skimming out HABs then returns fresh water to the water body it conditions. This system is part of an initiative projected to cost the state about $80 million. The harvester system is currently being used and tested in Long Island on Agawam Lake. The Governor says if it proves to be successful, it will be used all across the state.

 

Corning Incorporated Seeking Tax Break for Erwin Expansion
Corning Incorporated announced plans for expansion at the company’s Automotive Plant in Erwin.  The $25 million expansion would include adding two new buildings for storage and manufacturing and improved rail access. Corning Incorporated is asking the Steuben Industrial Development Agency for a $2.5 million tax break to ease the toll of these costs. Expansion is anticipated to create 13 jobs and Corning Incorporated says the project is necessary to keep the current 527 jobs in the company.

 

Prattsburgh Wind Farm Open House Tonight
Area residents are welcome tonight for an Open House hosted by the Prattsburgh Wind Farm. The Open House is this evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Prattsburgh Fire Hall.

 

Blood Drive in Bath Planned for Friday 
The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive this week on Friday October 11th at the First Presbyterian Church in Bath from 1-6pm. To make your appointment please call 800-RED-CROSS, visit RedCrossBlood.org or download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App.

 

County Public Health Holds Immunization Clinic

Steuben County Public Health will hold an immunization clinic this week on Wednesday October 9th at room G1 off of the D.S.S. lobby in the County Office Building. Vaccines are available at the clinics for children and adults who are uninsured or those who have insurance that does not cover vaccines.
