Congressman Reed Hospitalized After Collapsing in DC
Congressman Tom Reed collapsed in the Cannon Rotunda of the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, according to representatives from his office. Reports said paramedics attended to the Congressman, who he regained alertness and was awake while being wheeled out on a gurney. Reed was taken to George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC and his staff say now he is “in good condition” and “responsive”. Reed’s Democratic challenger for the 2020 race Tracy Mitrano tweeted “…putting all politics aside, I hope it is nothing serious and wish him a quick recovery.”


VA Hosting POW-MIA Ceremony This Afternoon
The Bath Veterans Association Medical Center hosts a prisoner of war/ missing in action recognition ceremony today at 1:15 pm in the Building 92 Leisure Room. Director of Chemung Valley Museum Bruce Whitmarsh will be guest speaker and talk about the history of the Civil War POW camp located in Elmira known as “Hellmira,” which was in operation from 1860-1864. Music will be provided by the Haverling High School Chorus and colors will be posted and retrieved by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.


Guthrie Facility at Erwin Tests Positive for Legionella
Water samples have tested positive for legionella at the Guthrie Healthworks Erwin facility. The NY State Health Department confirmed its finding with WETM. As a precaution, the Center voluntarily closed while it implements measures to prevent potential exposure to Legionella.


9/22-9/28 Declared as Steuben County Sheriff’s Week
Legislature Chairman Joe Hauryski has proclaimed the week of Sept. 22nd-28th as Steuben County Sheriff’s Week. Steuben’s Sheriff’s Department keeps the peace through law enforcement and many facets of public service, including maintaining the county jail, providing security in our courts, and serving and executing civil process for the courts. “Our men and women work hard day in and day out to be responsive and accountable to the public we serve,” Hauryski said. “I can only say I am proud to be associated with this department, which strives to live up to the principles of professionalism, integrity, leadership and service.”


Cuomo Extends Statute of Limitations in Rape Cases
Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation extending the statute of limitations to 20 years for rape in the second degree and to 10 years for rape in the third degree. This law also eliminates the statute of limitations for incest in the first degree and increases the time period in which victims can bring a civil suit for these offenses to 20 years. Prior to this new law, victims only had five years to bring a legal case alleging rape in the second degree or third degree or a criminal sexual act in the second degree or third degree.


Addison Man Arrested for Drug Charges
State Police have arrested 32-year-old Donald Hastings of Addison. He was stopped on State Route 13 in Veteran and charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, possession of a hypodermic instrument, unlawful possession of marijuana and aggravated unlicensed operation. He’ll answer this charges in court at a later date.
