Corning Man Arrested for Attempting to Attack Office:
A Corning man was arrested Tuesday afternoon as he was allegedly en-route to attack employees at an office in the city. Thomas Whitehead allegedly made several phone calls to the office, making threats to a woman there and other staff members. He told the employees he was on his way to the office to follow through on his threats. City police officers located Whitehead on foot walking in the direction of the office. He was allegedly found in possession of a large machete. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal contempt, and stalking. He was sent to the Steuben County Jail on $10,000 cash bail. Additional charges are pending.
Corning Woman Arrested in Attempted Shooting:
A Corning woman was arrested Monday evening for allegedly attempting to shoot another woman and herself. Members of the state and city police, along with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a home on Buffalo Street around 10:40 p.m. after a 911 caller claimed a woman attempted to shoot her. 51-year-old Laura Simons was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, and menacing. She was released from custody on her own recognizance. The investigation is ongoing, and it will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
NYSEG, RG&E Considering Rate Hike:
NYSEG and RG&E customers could see an increase in their bills next year, as the companies are proposing a rate hike. Annual electric delivery rates could increase by $156.7 million and annual gas delivery rates could increase by $6.3 million. For the average residential monthly electric customer that would be increase of about $10.20, while the gas bill would increase by $1.03. NYSEG and RG&E are holding public meetings about the proposed hike and comments can be submitted via their website. The process is expected to take about 11 months before the companies make any official announcements. The next meeting is today in Binghamton at the City Council Chambers at 5 p.m.
Corning Salvation Army School Supply Distribution:
Families needing some help getting ready to get back to school can stop by the annual Corning Salvation Army backpack distribution event, which is set for Thursday, August 22nd. Besides backpacks, other school supplies will also be available to Steuben County children in grades kindergarten through 12. The event will be at the Salvation Army on Denison Parkway from 3 to 6 p.m. Parents and legal guardians must bring identification, proof of address, and social security card, benefit card, or birth certificate for each child.
Rochester Catholic Diocese, Others Named in Lawsuits:
The Child Victims Act went into effect Wednesday, allowing alleged victims one year to file suits, no matter when the offense happened. Among the lawsuits filed were roughly two dozen in Monroe County Court against several Rochester Catholic parishes and schools, including the Rochester Diocese, the Aquinas Institute in Rochester, and St. Bernard Seminary. Camp Stella Maris in Livonia was also named, as was the Wellsville School District.
