N.J Man Arrested in Steuben Co. After Dangerous Weapons Found:

 

A New Jersey man was arrested in Steuben County Monday after authorities were allegedly alerted to weapons and dangerous materials at his home.  NBC New York reports that an emergency dispatcher in New Jersey received a phone call allegedly from Robert Wills on Monday, warning that police were going to be needed at his home because a person intended to commit acts of violence.  When police arrived, Wills not home, but their investigation found a dozen long guns, 2 handguns, and quantities of ammunition, fireworks, and materials and chemicals that could be used in the creation of explosive devices.  Wills was arrested at a relative’s home in Steuben County without incident and is awaiting extradition back to New Jersey.    

 

 

Road Rage Leads to Accident on I-86:

 

Road rage is being cited as the cause of accident involving two tractor-trailers on I-86 Wednesday.  According to state police, the drivers of the vehicles were “driving aggressively” and got into a quarrel on the highway that ended with one of the drivers rear-rending the other and forcing it off the road near Exit 50 in Painted Post.  The other driver then pulled over to the side of the highway.  Police said no charges were filed and no tickets were issued.  Neither driver sustained any injuries.

 

 

Parking Change for Paving at Haverling Central School:

 

The Haverling Central School District has announced that, due to paving work, the front loop at the middle and high schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday, August 9th and Monday, August 12th.  Those who need access to the school should instead park in the lot next to the football field.

 

 

Algae Bloom Closes Swimming at Penn Yan Park:

 

Swimming is closed for the time being at Indian Pines Park in Penn Yan after the Department of Health issued a Blue-green Algae Advisory following the identification of an algae bloom in the area.  People and animals should avoid contact with any algae blooms, scums, and colored water.  Don’t swim, wade, or fish.  Don’t drink the water.  Rinse with clean water if you are exposed.  While the swim area will remain closed until a re-open order has been issued by the DOH, the park itself, including the playground, pavilion, and picnic areas are still open to the public.  At this time, Red Jacket park is unaffected and open for all activities.

 

 

Rep. Reed Hosting App Challenge:

 

Representative Tom Reed has announced that he’ll be hosting a Congressional App Challenge (CAC) for students in middle and high school.  Eligible students are challenged to create computer programs – or apps – written in any programming language for any platform (desktop/PC, web, mobile, raspberry Pi, etc.).  The submission portal is now open.  Students are encouraged to register by September 10th.  All apps must be submitted by November 1st.  Winners will have their apps on display in the U.S. Capitol Building, on house.gov, and on the Congressional App Challenge website.  This is Reed’s first time participating with the competition.  He said [his office] understands and cares “about the importance of STEM education and providing the tools to have a developed workforce.”  To learn more about the CAC visit https://www.congressionalappchallenge.us/

 

 

Steuben Sheriff EMT Program to be Recognized Aug. 15th:

 

The formal public implementation of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program will be August 15th at 10 a.m. at the county Public Safety Building on Rumsey Street Extension.  Recently, 15 officers were awarded state EMT certification as part of county Sheriff Jim Allard’s initiative, which calls for his entire department to be certified by 2020. 

 

 

DEC Accepting Applications for Environmental Conservation Officer Exam:
