Steuben Co.'s 2nd Annual "Stand Up for Recovery Day" March 20th:


Steuben County's second annual "Stand Up for Recovery Day" aims to change the public's attitude toward substance abuse and addiction.  Set for 10 a.m. March 20th in the county office buildin's third-floor atrium, the county event coincides with Stand Up for Recovery Day in Albany and other areas across the state.  Proponents of Recovery Day say it's time to end the myths around alcohol and drug addictions, most notably the idea addicts are hopeless failures incapable of sustained sobriety, jobs, or healthy relationships.  The stigma assocated with abuse only makes recovery from addictions that much harder.



"Recruit N.Y." Weekend April 27th/28th: 


The Bath Volunteer Fire Department will be among many departments participating in the upcoming Recruit N.Y. weekend.  The initiative, which is set for April 27th and 28th, is a state-wide recruitment drive that looks to bolster the number of volunteer firefighters throughout the state.  The Bath department will have an open house that weekend with firetruck rides, car extricating demonstrations, and burning-building demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.



13-year-old Girl Wins Regional Scripps Spelling Bee:


60 students from schools across the region gathered at Corning-Painted Post Middle School this weekend, each looking to take home the crown as the champion in the 17th annual Scripps Regional Spelling Bee.  After more than 11 rounds of competition, which included both spelling and vocabulary, 13-year-old Anh Thu Tran of the Chemung Valley Montessorie School in Elmira took home the trophy.  Anh now moves on to represent our region in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will take place in May.



Food Bank Check Out Hunger "GratiTour" Today:


The annual Check Out Hunger fundraising campaign for the Food Bank of the Southern Tier has come to and, and to show its appreciation, the Food Bank will be hosting a "GratiTour" today.  Food Bank staff will embark on a tour to each participating grocery store to thank the staff with treats, streamers, confetti, balloons, and awards for the cashiers who rang the most donations.  At each store, the Food Bank will also be presented with a check donated by shoppers and the grand, combined total will be announced today.
