Winter Weather Causes Delays/Closings:
Old Man Winter strikes again, prompting some delays across the region today. Bradford and the GST BOCES Wildwood campus are on 2 hour delays this morning. Avoca, Canisteo-Greenwood, Dundee, Hornell, Jasper-Troupsburg, Odessa Montour, Prattsburgh, and Watkins Glen central schools, previously on delay, will now be closed today.
Lindley Man Facing Kidnapping, Assault Charges:
A domestic incident in the Town of Lindley over the weekend has resulted in multiple charges against a Lindley man. State Police responded to a residence on Welty Road around 7 p.m. Saturday to arrest the suspect, Michael Sawyer. Sawyer refused to surrender to police and authorities established a perimeter around the residence. After several hours, Sawyer surrendered without incident and he was charged with kidnapping, assault, strangulation, and criminal contempt. The State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team was called in due to an allegedly active lab that was discovered at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
Steuben Leg. Chairman Hauryski Not Seeking 4th Term:
Steuben County Legislature Chairman Joe Hauryski has announced that he will not be seeking a fourth term on the county board. Hauryski has chaired the county Legislature since 2011. He will step down December 31st, 2019.
Corning City Council Member/Reed Aide to Run for Steuben Leg.:
A current member of the Corning City Council and an aide for Representative Tom Reed is now looking to run for the Steuben County Legislature. Alison Hunt announced her intention over the weekend, saying in a statement that “there is an opportunity to attract people to our area and [she looks] forward to being a voice of the next generation to help make this growth possible.” Hunt has represented Corning’s 8th ward for three years, and has served as an aide for Congressman Reed for eight years. She is running for the 2nd Legislative District, which serves the City of Corning.
Proposed Hakes Landfill Expansion Discussion Tues.:
There will be a public hearing Tuesday at the Campbell Town Hall to discuss the rezoning of several tax parcels to make way for a proposed expansion of the Hakes C&D landfill. There will not be a vote Tuesday, only a discussion. The talk will focus on information and public input on whether or not to rezone the land. The parcels are owned by Hakes. The meeting will start at 7 p.m.
$3.9M Promised for Southern Tier Airports:
Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced state funding to the tune of $3.9 million for airports in the Southern Tier. The Corning-Painted Post airport will receive $64,000, while the Ithaca and Elmira airports will each receive $1.5 million. The Greater Binghamton Regional Airport is set to receive $828,000. The money will be used for safety enhancements, facilities modernization, operational improvements, and local business development.
