NCA Grant to Ease Medicare Enrollment in Steuben
A $115,000 grant to Steuben County from the National Council on Aging will help make enrollment easier for eligible Medicare recipients beginning January 1st. By coordinating enrollments with related agencies, the 20-month grant will allow those on Medicare to also enroll in the Medicare Savings Program, Low Income Subsidy, Low Income HEAP, Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Coordinating these enrollments is expected to improve case-finding and eliminate the duplication of effort for offices. The national grant’s required 15 percent county match is now included in the 2019 Steuben County Budget.

 

STOP-DWI Holiday Crackdown Begins This Week
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office announced that County police agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crack down on impaired driving beginning this week on Friday and running until New Year’s Day. The holiday STOP-DWI Crackdown will have New York State Police, County Sheriff and municipal law enforcement agencies out in full force across the state.

 

Avoca Man Arrested for DWI Following Accident
A 48-year-old Avoca man was arrested for DWI charges following a response to a report of a one car motor vehicle crash on County Route 70A in the Town of Fremont. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office reports Thomas J. Dewey allegedly operated a motor vehicle in an intoxicated condition as he traveled east on 70A and lost control of the vehicle, striking a head wall/culvert and caused the vehicle to overturn. Dewey was transported to a local hospital for treatment and charged with Driving While Intoxicated and failure to keep right. He was released on traffic summons to appear in Hornellsville Town Court at a later date.

 

Hornell Woman Arrested for Hosting Underage Drinking
A Hornell woman has been charged with 2 counts of Unlawfully Dealing with a Child in the 1st degree and violating the Local Social Host Law for allegedly hosting a party serving alcoholic beverages to persons under the age of 21. Elena F. Zaldivar, age 21, was charged following an investigation into a report of an underage drinking party in the Town of Hornellsville. She was released on an appearance ticket to appear again in Hornellsville Town Court at a later date.

 

Hornell Man Charged with DWI
A traffic stop on State Route 36 in the Town of Hornellsville led to the arrest of a Hornell man for DWI charges. According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, 26-year-old Mark L. Snowden was allegedly operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Driving with .08% or more blood alcohol content and 2 counts of speeding in zone. Snowden was released on traffic summons to appear in Hornellsville Town Court at a later date.

 

Red Cross Seeking Blood Donations
The American Red Cross continues to urge people to donate blood during the busy holiday season. Two blood drives have been scheduled in Steuben County this month. The first will be held December 21st at the Bath Ambulance building on East Steuben Street. The drive will run from noon until 5 p.m. The second blood drive will be held December 31st at the American Legion on Main Street in Campbell. Hours for that drive are 10-3.

 

Donations of Clothing and Christmas Gifts Needed for Avoca Family
A family of seven from Avoca that recently lost everything in a house fire needs some help to make their Christmas a merry one. Charles and Erica Lynn Johnson have five children: Izayha, Harmoney, Kaydin, Leyla and Braxtyn and one dog. Donations for clothing and Christmas presents will be accepted at Stephanie’s Restaurant in Bath and are much-needed. Clothing sizes and Christmas gift ideas are listed below.

Izayha (age 14) likes fishing and Fortnight and just saved up for a new PS4 that was lost in the fire

Kaydin (age 9) likes NERF guns, Fortnight and arts and crafts

Leyla (age 7) likes horses, ponies and owls.

Braxtyn (age 3) likes Paw Patrol, PJ Mask and construction trucks.

 

Purina One dog food is also requested for their four-legged friend.
