Annual Shop With A Cop in Bath is Today
The annual Shop with a Cop program will be happening this morning at 9am in the Bath Village Hall. The Bath Village Police, State DEC, Hammondsport Police Department and Bath VA Police Department will be doing the event in the Village of Bath with the assistance of Bath K-Mart. The Steuben County Crime Victims Advocate and Arbor Development will assist the fourteen local children from a shelter to participate in the event.


Hornell Courthouse Auctioned for $2,000
The Steuben County Legislature is set to approve and finalize the bid placed for the old Hornell Courthouse at 12 Allen Street sold at $2,000. Bidding for the building was overseen by Steuben County Finance Commissioner Patrick Donnelly and administered by Pirrung Auctioneers, Inc. of Wayland. The first bid of $50,000 solicited by the auctioneer was met with no answers. Dalton Cady of Cameron offered a “minimum bid” of $2,000 about three minutes into the auction and was sold the courthouse. The County Legislature will take up a vote for finalization as their “Resolution 1” in 2019.


Cuomo Vetoes NY Lottery Anonymity Bill
Governor Andrew Cuomo has vetoed a bill that would give major lottery jackpot winners in New York State anonymity. Those who sponsored the bill wanted the state to provide the privacy of being anonymous for winners of over $5,000 to avoid being pursued by others seeking money. Cuomo said in a statement late last Friday that lottery winners in New York who desire to be anonymous have the option of forming a liability corporation to do so.


Grants Available to Grape Farmers Through CCE Program
A state investment worth $1.3 million into a new Cornell University program to help Concord grape growers could help farmers in our region. The new Concord Vineyard Improvement Program would help growers of Concord grapes plant vines, diversify operations of and renovate existing vineyards. Funding worth $145,000 by a USDA grant will be matched by additional state funding provided by the University’s Department of Food Science for new Concord grape product development. As part of the Concord Vineyard Improvement Program planned at the April Grape Summit, up to $50,000 worth of grants to enhance vineyard operations will be available on a rolling basis to growers in our county.


VA Seeks Volunteers for Wreaths Across America
The Wreaths Across America ceremony needs volunteers for Saturday. Those interested in helping place the wreaths should be sure to dress warm and meet at the VA campus by 11:30 a.m. Saturday to catch a shuttle bus or walk up to the cemetery. Coffee, cocoa and cookies to follow at the Historical Museum.
