Lindley Presho Fire Chief Killed in Campbell Crash:


State police investigated a deadly crash. It happened just before 5 pm Sunday on Route 415 in Campbell. The crash involved a motorcycle and a vehicle. Killed was the motorcyclist, 65-year-old Terry Hill of Lindley. Troopers arrested the other driver, 42-year-old Robert Neally of Corning and he was charged with driving while intoxicated. Neally was sent to jail on $75,000 bail.  Hill was the Lindley Presho Fire Chief and the fire department has a black ribbon hanging on the fire department doors, and their flag is at half-staff in honor of Chief Hill.  The North Corning, Bath Volunteer, and East Campbell fire departments have all offered their condolences on the passing of Chief Hill.



Canisteo Man Charged with Arson:


A Canisteo man has been arrested on charges of arson and reckless endangerment.  According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Steven Drake was arrested as the result of an investigation into a reported house fire on Union Street in Canisteo.  The fire was found to be incendiary and intentional in nature.  Drake was charged with arson in the third, a class C felony, and reckless endangerment in the first, a class D felony.  He was arraigned and sent to the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail.  Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard thanks the members of the Canisteo and South Hornell Volunteer Fire Departments for their quick response to the fire and the Village of Canisteo Police Department for their assistance in the investigation.



Steuben Co. Probation Sweep:


On October 4th, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Troopers, and Steuben County Probation Department conducted a probation compliance verification sweep.  88 separate probationers were checked during the sweep, and four were sent to the county jail due to alleged probation violations.  One person was charged and released on an appearance ticket.  60-year-old Terry Smith of Hammondsport was arrested for criminal possession of marijuana and was sent to the jail.  20-year-old Dillon Cook of Campbell was arrested on a violation of probation warrant issued by Avoca Town Court was sent to the jail.  54-year-old Robert Ritchey of Wayland was arrested for allegedly committing aggravated unlicensed operation, open container, and operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock device and he was sent to the jail.  46-year-old Teresa McWilson of Campbell was allegedly found to be under the influence of alcohol in violation of her terms and conditions of probation and was sent to the jail.  20-year-old Tyler Vogt of Corning allegedly possessed marihuana and was released on an appearance ticket.



E-C Airport to Offer Non-Stop Services to Washington Dulles in 2019:


The Elmira Corning Regional Airport and Chemung County have announced that United Airlines will soon begin offering direct flights to Washington Dulles International Airport.  The flights will replace the Newark services two times a day.  They are expected to begin in 2019. 



Drivers Reminded to Winterize Their Vehicles:


Before you know it, these recent cooler temperatures will turn into full-blown winter and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee is urging New Yorkers to winterize their vehicles and familiarize themselves with safe winter driving tips now.  Also, drivers are reminded that starting today, snow tires with metal studs can be installed on vehicles.  Under state law, these tires may only be used from October 16th through April 30th.  Tips for winter driving include: not driving during ice or snow storms unless absolutely necessary, clearing ice and snow from your vehicle before driving, remembering that bridges, overpasses, and ramps will freeze first, and to drive slowly.
