Alpine Woman Arrested in Steuben Co. on Drug Charge:


The New York State Police of Bath announce the arrest of an Alpine woman as part of an ongoing investigation into the production, distribution, and sale of methamphetamine in Steuben County.  27-year-old Noelle McCarthy allegedly entered the pharmacy inside the Tops Markets grocery store in Bath on August 13th and purchased a pseudoephedrine product knowing it would be used to unlawfully manufacture methamphetamine.  McCarthy has been charged with criminal possession of a methamphetamine manufacturing material and she has been released on an appearance ticket.



Campbell Facing Doubled Property Taxes, Budget Meeting Tomorrow:


Property taxes in the Town of Campbell might double in 2019 due to fire department costs.  Currently, the property tax rate in Campbell is roughly $1 for every $1,000 of assessed value, but under next year’s budget that would increase to approximately $2 per $1,000.  The total proposed budget is $246,323, up from $140,385 in 2018.  There will be a public meeting about the budget tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Campbell Fire Department.



Hydrant Flushing Underway in Bath:


As a reminder to the residents of the Village of Bath, Bath Electric, Gas and Water Systems began hydrant flushing in the village Sunday.  Work is expected to continue until Thursday at 7 a.m.  The flushing is done as part of BEGW’s water main and fire hydrant preventive maintenance program.  Water customers could experience discolored and dirty water and are advised to check the water before using for clarity.  If dirty water is experienced, turn on a faucet, preferably one outside, to clear the water line before cooking, cleaning, or doing laundry. 



Sears Files for Chapter 11:


Early this morning, retailer Sears Holdings announced that it’s filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  Also announced CEO Eddie Lampert will be stepping down effective immediately.  The company will be closing 142 stores towards the end of the year as it struggles with massive debt and losses.  Liquidation sales are expected to begin shortly.  At this time it’s unclear if Sears is still viable in a scaled down business model, or if it will go out of business for good. 



Mitrano Holding Town Hall in Corning Today:


Democratic candidate for the 23rd Congressional district Tracy Mitrano will be holding an open town hall meeting today in Corning.  It will be held at the United Steelworkers Local 1000 (100 Civic Center Plaza) from 5 to 7 p.m.  This will be Mitrano’s eighth town hall since September.  She plans to hold one in all of the district’s 11 counties.
