Congressional Democratic Primary Tomorrow:
A reminder to Democrats in the 23rd congressional district: you’ve got a big decision to make tomorrow. Tuesday is the primary, where five candidates are competing to face off against incumbent Republican Tom Reed in November. Reed has held the office since 2010 and was re-elected in 2016 with 57 percent of the vote. The five democratic candidates are: Linda Andrei, Ian Golden, Tracy Mitrano, Max Della Pia, and Eddie Sundquist. Some of the issues they’ve cited as important include healthcare, education, tax reform, and jobs. For more information about the candidates, including a chance to compare them side by side, you can visit https://www.vote411.org.
Waste Incinerator Bill Misses Deadline:
Among the many bills that the state legislature failed to move on before the end of the 2018 session, was one that would block plans for a massive garbage incinerator in Romulus. Over 30 local government and school boards, as well as over 20 local environmental and business organizations have come out in opposition to the project, and the New York State Senate unanimously approved a bill to block the proposal earlier this month. The proposed facility would be built between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes and would reportedly burn over 2,000 tons of garbage and withdraw 445,000 gallons of water from Seneca Lake every day.
Family Video Offering Free Rentals to “A” Students:
School might be out for the summer, but the importance of good report cards remains. Family Video has announced that they’ll give away free movie rentals to any student that brings in a report card with an “A” on it. For every “A” in core classes like math, history, science, and writing, the student can check out a movie for the night. The program will start on July 1st and will run through the entire month.
Food Drive for Food Bank’s BackPack Program:
Community members have the chance this week to both give and get with a food drive being held by Isaac Heating and Air Conditioning. The event is in support of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier’s BackPack Program, and every donor that gives four or more items will be entered in a drawing for a barbecue grill, courtesy of Isaac. The drive is being held at the Corning ReStore on State Route 414. Items on the wish list include: canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, canned tuna and chicken, dry pastas, boxed macaroni and cheese, and canned soups. Donations can be made until June 30th.
