Arkport School Locked Down Due to Possible Threat:


The Arkport Central School was locked down Thursday after the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office said it received two emails on its anonymous tipline about a student with a weapon.  The Sheriff’s Office said it immediately notified the school and appropriate action was taken placing it on lockdown.  A mental health team from the county was called in to assist with interviewing the student, who was located at the school.  After a thorough search of the building and grounds, and conducting interviews, the Sheriff’s Office concluded that there was no credible threat.  The lockdown was completely lifted just before 11 a.m.  Superintendent Jesse Harper thanked the community for responding to the lockdown with patience and cooperation. 


Car Fire in Hornell:


Firefighters were called to Ben Weitsman of Hornell scrap metal recycling on Ice House Road on Thursday for an active vehicle fire.  Officials report the vehicle caught fire due to a minor explosion while crews were moving it from one location to another.  Firefighters doused the vehicle with water and within 20 minutes it was under control.  There were no injuries.



Probation Violation Arrest:


48-year-old Kristina Jolley of Painted Post has been arrested for allegedly violating a term or condition of her pre-trial release.  Jolley was arraigned and sent to the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.



New Corning Hotel Nearly Ready to Open:


After nearly two years, the long-awaited new Hilton-Garden Inn in Corning will soon be opening its doors.  Management says they plan to offer guests a new kind of experience that’s unlike other accommodations in the area.  The new hotel will have 125 rooms, an indoor pool and fitness center, meeting rooms, and a full bar and restaurant.  The hotel is expected to open by July 10th



Horseheads Student Heads to Scripps:


The Scripps National Spelling Bee gets underway May 29th and there will be an area student competing for the top prize.  Kris Patel, a sixth-grader at Horseheads Intermediate School, qualified for the competition by winning the regional bee that was held in Corning on March 17th.  The 2018 Scripps Spelling Bee is May 29th through the 31st



Memorial Day Events:


Monday marks Memorial Day, a day to honor those who have died in active military service.  Here are some of the events take place throughout the area.  The Bath V.A. Medical Center will be hosting a Memorial Day program in the Bath National Cemetery on Monday at 10 a.m.  Following the ceremony, the public is encourage to walk the cemetery grounds to view the over 15,000 flags placed by the Dana Lyon 5th grade classes.  In Hammondsport, the American Legion Post will have a color guard present at a number of locations, begins at 9 a.m. at the Mitchellsville cemetery.  The group will then move to the Pleasant Valley cemetery at 9:30, then at 10 a.m. they will be at the veteran’s honor roll memorial in the Hammondsport village square.  Finally they will march to Elmwood Cemetery for a service.
