Statue Unveiled at Law Enforcement Memorial Park
Closing “Steuben County Police Officers Week” was the ceremony yesterday honoring 31 fallen officers who died while serving in the line of duty. Over 100 people attended at the Steuben County Law Enforcement Memorial Park to honor our local heroes and watch the unveiling of the new Steuben Memorial Statue created at the Corning Museum of Glass and supported by seven metal pillars, representing the seven counties honored at the park and created by metal crafters at Mercury Aircraft. The statue is a blue glass flame representing eternal remembrance of fallen officers.

Empire Access Acquires Axcess
Yesterday, Empire Access announced it completed its acquisition of Axcess Ontario, another leading telecommunications service provider in the state. This will add over 200 miles of fiber optic network to Empire Access’ existing regional network and Empire Access plans to expand its infrastructure to serve Ontario County. Axcess Ontario is a fiber ring that existed since 2005, providing an open-access network for Ontario County and recognized as a national broadband model. Empire Access will expand its service into surrounding businesses and residential communities of Ontario County in the next few months.

Teens Arrested Following Wayland Burglary
New York State Police arrested two teens following an investigation into a burglary at a home in the Village of Wayland. Police say 16-year-old Adrian Palmer and 17-year-old Sebastian Harvey also stole items from a Wayland convenience store.Both were arrested and charged with Second Degree Burglary and Petit Larceny. Harvey and Palmer were arraigned in the Village of Wayland Court then released on their own recognizance.

OFA Offers Medicare Seminars this Tuesday-Thursday
Steuben County Office for the Aging has set its second in a series of free seminars on Medicare for May 22-24. Led by Steuben’s certified insurance counselors, the sessions will inform citizens about basic Medicare, Medicare-related health insurance, prescription plans and low income subsidies. The program is intended for people becoming Medicare eligible, or those with general questions about their current coverage and options.Programs will be held:
May 22 at Corning Senior Center at 1 Park Lane (small conference room) from 1 to 3pm
May 23 at Steuben County Offices Building located 3 E. Pulteney Square in Bath (South Conference room, third floor) from 10-11:30am
May 24 at Hornell Senior Center located at 20 Broadway Mall from 10-11:30am

Hornell Man Arrested for Probation Violation
Steuben County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of Clifford J. Neally of Hornell due to a warrant for a probation violation. Deputies say Neally violated a term or condition of his probation for a City of Hornell arrest and charge for aggravated Driving While Intoxicated and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle in the first degree. Following his arraignment at Steuben County Court, Neally was remanded to the Steuben County Jail.

Steuben Legislature Meets Monday to Discuss “Raise the Age”
This Monday at 10am, the Steuben County Legislature meets with the agenda to honor Steuben County’s Child Abuse Prevention Award recipient and hire a consultant for New York state’s “Raise the Age” law. Lawmakers will likely join the “Raise the Age Compliance Coalition” and contract with Treahy Consultation Services LLC, (TCS) to seek solutions for Steuben and its sister counties Chemung, Livingston, Schuyler and Yates to effectively comply with the state law raising the age of “criminal responsibility” from 16 to 18. The law also requires creation of regional detention facilities for youths 16-17 years old that are determined by a court to be a danger to themselves or others. For the Child Abuse Prevention Award, Steuben County’s Legislature will also recognize an individual, program, or organization that significantly contributed to the prevention of child abuse in Steuben.
