2 Accused of Assaulting Corning P.O., Violating Order of Protection:


Two  men have been charged in a domestic disturbance in Corning where orders of protection were allegedly violated and a Corning Police Officer was allegedly assaulted.  According to police, they were called to West Third Street around 2 p.m. Friday and they believed both 29-year-old Jeremy Thomas of Atlanta and 43-year-old Luis Rivera of Bath were inside.  Police believed both men were violating two separate orders of protection issued for the same victim.  They said Thomas attempted to hide and punched an officer while being arrested.  Rivera was taken into custody without incident.  Thomas has been charged with attempted assault, criminal contempt, aggravated family offense, and resisting arrest.  He was sent to the Steuben County Jail on $5,000 cash bail.  Rivera has been charged with criminal contempt and aggravated family offense.  He was sent to the jail without bail.



Gov. Cuomo Called On to Extend Pistol Permit Recert. Deadline:


Governor Andrew Cuomo is being called on by state leaders to extend the deadline for renewing pistol permits as required by the Safe Act.  The deadline for permits currently over five years old is set for January 31st, but poor compliance is being blamed on poor outreach and confusion.  Permits can be renewed through the state police website or with a form available at state police stations and at some county clerks’ offices.  You can get more information about the permit recertification at https://safeact.ny.gov/pistol-permit-recertification



Damage at Keuka College Following Burst Pipe:


A burst water pipe at Keuka College last week is being blamed for damage to the

campus’ Allen Hall.  Officials say the pipe, which was connected to the fire suppression system on the third floor, broke on Monday and caused heavy damage, leaving the building uninhabitable.  Classes and the college’s Office of Human Resources have been relocated. 



Miss Finger Lakes Crowed in Corning:


The road to the Miss America Pageant is underway with Miss Finger Lakes and Miss Upstate New York being named in Corning this weekend.  The competition took place at the Radisson Hotel and the Union Hall Civic Center.  Diana Russo of Rochester was crowned Miss Finger Lakes, while Emily Mahana of Cicero took home the title of Miss Upstate New York.  These young women will now compete in the upcoming Miss New York pageant.  The winner there will move on to the Miss America Pageant.   



Alfred State Prom Dress Extravaganza Set for April 15th:


Alfred State has announced that its annual Project Prom Dress Extravaganza will be held on April 15th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Pioneer Center on the Alfred campus.  Project Prom Dress sees the sisters of Delta Chi Omega collecting new or gently used prom gowns, shoes, and accessories from bridal shops and individuals that teenage girls from Allegany County and surrounding areas can then come and choose from for free.  Also on April 15th the Delta Chi Omega sisters will be collecting donations of gowns, shoes, and accessories.
