NY Firefighters Head to CA to Help with Wildfires:


Governor Andrew Cuomo has dispatched a crew of around 20 firefighters and volunteers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to California to help battle the ongoing wildfires.  Though crews are beginning to make progress, the fires have already devastated much of California’s wine country over the past week, with at least 40 people killed and 5,700 homes destroyed. 



Local Lawmakers to Host Meetings in Wheeler, Canisteo:


State Senator Tom O’Mara and Assemblymen Phil Palmesano and Joe Errigo will be hosting meetings in Canisteo and Wheeler on Thursday.  The meetings, which the lawmakers described as informal and open to the public, will be held at the Canisteo Town Hall from 5 to 6 p.m. and at the Wheeler Town Hall from 7 to 8 p.m.  Residents will be able to share their concerns, opinions, and suggestions with the lawmakers. 



Local Police Depts. Among Those Nominated for K9 Grants:


The Village of Bath, Hornell and Corning City police departments are among many New York departments that have been nominated for the 2017 Aftermath K9 Grant.  The Aftermath Grant will award a total of $15,000 in grants to five departments and their existing or prospective K9 programs for maintenance, safety, equipment, or officer training.  The top five departments with the most votes between now and November 7th will win awards, with 1st place receiving $5,000.  Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. CST on November 7th.  To vote, visit https://www.aftermath.com/k9-grant/  and fill out the voting form, selecting your desired department from the dropdown menu. 



Thousands Attend Outdoor Show:


As expected, the Southern Tier Outdoor Show in Bath was a hot ticket event this weekend, with thousands enjoying the sunshine and scores of attractions.  Organizers said some 3,000 people had attended by early Saturday afternoon.  The 11th annual event was coordinated by Steuben’s Cornell Cooperative Extension and was held at the Steuben County Fairgrounds.



Elmira Woman Looking to Compete in Miss USA Pageant:


This year’s Miss USA pageant could have some upstate New York flair as an area woman is looking to compete.  20-year-old Dominique Miles of Elmira will be competing for the title of Miss New York USA on January 12 through the 14th.  If she wins, she’ll move on to the Miss USA Pageant where she’ll represent New York State.



Rotarians Finish Roadside Clean-Up for Season:


A crew of Bath Rotarians recently pitched in to help finish the last highway clean-up for

the season along the I-86 Bath Exit 38 entrance and exit roads.  For the past decade, the Bath Rotary Club has been responsible for picking up litter along the roadway as part of the state’s Adopt-A-Highway program.  The group executes clean-up sessions four or five times during the summer season. 



Smile Mile Charity Race Joins Red Baron Half-Marathon Weekend:


Registration is currently open for the Red Baron Half-Marathon and Smile Mile, to be held on Sunday, November 5th beginning at noon.  Both races are organized by the Southern Tier Running Club and they will start on the Corning Community College campus in Corning.  The Smile Mile is a one-mile charity race in support of the Kramer Foundation.  The Kramer Foundation helps retrain pets to improve their behavior, and also provides long-term shelter for pets whose owners are serving in the armed forces overseas.  Interested participants can pre-register online at http://www.southerntierrunningclub.com.  Those who register by October 18th will receive a reflective full-zip jacket.
