Hornell Drug Investigation Leads to 4 Arrests:

 

Four people have been arrested for allegedly bringing drugs into the City of Hornell that lead to a fatal overdose last week.  23-year-old Amanda Alexin, 24-year-old Damon Flurschultz, and 25-year-old Jessica Davis, all of Hornell, as well as 27-year-old Kevin Cline of Belfast have been charged.  Alexin has additionally been accused in another drug deal in August that resulted in an overdose that would have been fatal except NARCAN was administered in time.  All four suspects face multiple charges and are currently being held at the Steuben County Jail without bail. 

 

 

Canisteo Man Charged in Domestic Dispute:

 

A Canisteo man was arrested after State Police responded to a domestic dispute.  28-year-old Daniel Fisher is accused of threatening the victim with a knife.  He has been charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.  Fisher was previously convicted of menacing in 2012.  He was arraigned and sent to the Steuben County Jail on $1,500 cash bail.

 

 

Senator Schumer Pushes for Improved Disaster Phone Bill:

 

Speaking on Sunday, Senator Charles Schumer vowed to push for passage of a bill that requires cellphones to work on other carriers’ networks during emergencies.  The Securing Access to Networks in Disasters Act, known as the SANDY Act, would also make 911 services more universally available during disasters.  During Superstorm Sandy in 2012, Schumer said many residents of New York and New Jersey couldn’t make phone calls because cellphone towers were rendered inoperable.  The House of Representatives passed the bill in January.

 

 

Suicide Prevention Walk and POW/MIA Ceremony at Bath V.A. this Week:

 

During September of each year, the Bath V.A. observes Suicide Prevention Month and the importance of the Power of One.  One small act can make a very big difference in someone’s life.  Consider joining the V.A. on Wednesday for the Power of One Walk to show your support.  The walk will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the V.A. parade ground.  Additionally, join the V.A. again on Friday for the annual Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Ceremony at 1 p.m. in Building 92.  The public is invited to join in formally recognizing former Prisoners of War and the sacrifices they endured in the name of freedom, while remembering those still missing.

 

 

Food Bank Kicks Off 10th Annual Fill-the-Bus Backpack Campaign:

 

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier has kicked off its 10th Annual Fill-the-Bus Backpack Campaign and they have one goal in mind – making sure that children have access to nutritious food.  Now through September 23rd customers can purchase child-friendly foods at their local Wegmans stores in Corning, Elmira, Hornell, Ithaca and Johnson City to support the program.  Shoppers can purchase prepacked grocery bags at checkout for $3, $5, and $10 with all donations staying in the Southern Tier.
