Cuomo Requests Disaster Assistance for 15 Counties
This week, Governor Cuomo requested that the federal government grant a Major Disaster Declaration for 15 counties impacted by flash flooding, tornados and unprecedented levels of precipitation during severe storms in late June and July. The Governor's request includes calls for both public and individual assistance for all 15 impacted counties.
Canisteo Man Arrested for Menacing
State Police arrested 28-year-old Daniel Fisher of Canisteo. Troopers charged him with 2nd degree menacing with weapon and criminal possession of a weapon with intent to use. He was detained for court action.
Reed Wants Teamster Participation on Pension Reduction Proposal
Congressman Tom Reed is encouraging members of the Teamsters union to make their voice heard regarding the current pension reduction proposal that was recently approved by the Department of Treasury. Union members have until September 6th to accept or reject the plan. Reed said Thursday that there are thousands of retirees who paid into that fund believing their investments would be there for their retirement.
Police To Track Impaired Drivers for Holiday Weekend
Police in New York and Pennsylvania are searching for impaired drivers. For the next few days, police in both states will be tracking intoxicated and impaired drivers. The Labor Day weekend has prompted additional patrols on both side of the state line.
Attorney General Office Recovers Over $2 Million In Wages
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman released a report yesterday stating the New York Attorney General office recovered more than $2.7 million in back wages for this past year. This money was supposed to be paid to over 1,500 low-wage workers in mostly service industries such fast-food, health care, taxi cabs as well as construction.
NYS Education Revamps Science Curriculum
As students prepare for back to school, New York State has adopted new standards for the science curriculum. For the first time in over 20 years, the state education department has updated science standards to include and emphasize climate change. More specifically, students will study how humans contribute to the process as well as the data available on the subject. In the past, inclusion of climate change was avoided due to some believing the topic was controversial or political.
Yesterday’s national gas price average hit the highest recorded price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline so far this year. The near-term combinations of numerous refinery and pipeline shut downs, tightened access to supply levels in the Gulf and anticipated high gasoline demand surrounding Labor Day weekend, means motorists may not have seen the full impact of Harvey at the pump. As of Wednesday evening, the Department of Energy (DOE) is reporting that 10 Gulf Coast refineries remain shut down. The Colonial Pipeline, which supplies the east coast, announced Wednesday evening it expects to temporarily suspend its gasoline, diesel and jet fuel pipelines.
