Village Republican caucus


Village of Bath Republicans held their caucus last night for two seats on the Village Board. Mark Bardeen and Melanie Coots, both current board members where selected for the March election. No other candidates were nominated. Bardeen has served six years for the Village and Coots is just completing a two year term. Both candidates were also endorsed by the Village Democrats at their caucus last week.


Clayton Trial Resumes with More Witness Testimony


The Thomas Clayton murder trial resumed on Monday with six more witness taking the stand.  Among them were players at the poker game the night of the murder, a New York State Police Investigator, a close friend of the victim, and a New York State Police K-9 handler.  So far forty-five witnesses have testified over the course of the trial, which will resume today at 9:30 a.m.  Clayton is facing charges of first-and-second degree murder in connection with his wife’s death.  He is currently free on bail. 


 Steuben Co. Reminds Residents of Upcoming Drug Forum


Steuben County is reminding residents of its upcoming Community Opioid and Substance Abuse Forum.  It will be held on February 9th at 6 p.m. in the Haverling High School Auditorium in Bath.  It will feature a panel of county officials, physicians, and related agency representatives with information designed to assist addicts and their families.   


Car on railroad tracks


A car ended up stuck on railroad tracks last evening at the intersection of RT 352 and Gorton Road in Corning. Apparently the driver of a car passed out and the car ended up on railroad tracks. Steuben County Sheriff’s Department is investigating…the driver was taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.


Governor Proposes Writing Roe v. Wade into State Constitution


On Family Planning Advocate’s Day of Action, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he proposing writing Roe v. Wade into the New York State constitution.  In case the Roe v. Wade decision is overturned or altered by a new U.S. Supreme Court, the governor said he wants to keep abortion legal in NYS.  Said the Governor, “We will not allow the progress of the women’s movement to be stopped, and we must seize this opportunity to bring the state and nation forward and stand up for women’s health.”


Last Day to Sign up for Obamacare


Today is the last day to sign up for the Obamacare health insurance program….known as the Affordable Care Act. The future of the Health Care program is uncertain as the new President and Republicans have said they will replace it with a better one.  Despite the political fight that is going on today, the program is expected to continue through this year and maybe next year as well.
